Beyond Bernie 4. Burlington’s Socialist Mayor

Ойын-сауық

www.vermontpbs...
The 1980s introduced Ronald Reagan and his conservative politics to the nation. But in true Vermont fashion, the state’s biggest city swung to the left voting Bernie Sanders, a self-proclaimed Socialist, into the mayor’s office by a mere 10 votes. Since then, Burlington has been a bastion of progressive politics setting an example for the state and the nation.

@@alowamamba4568 I'm for the campaign financing reform idea where everyone is granted $100 of play money where they pick the candidate they want to contribute it to. And of course, citizens united would have to be demolished in the process. UBI? I know it's the cool hip trendy dance all the kids are digging, but...seems like a band-aid on income inequality. The poor will spend it. The rich will horde it. In fact, it may actually accelerate income inequality and do more harm than good. It will give a purchasing power bump in the short term but will eventually bring about inflation and unless it is continued AND increased incrementally with inflation, will result in greater inequality. True transformation and reversal of the purchasing power slide the middle class has undergone for the past 40 years requires a throwback to the Keynesian taxation and labor movements of the early to mid-twentieth century.

Eigono Kyoushi Bernie’s finance reform to be just like Andrew Yang’s democracy dollars policy? The VAT counters the rich and will help close the wealth gap in the future. UBI would be transformative for poverty. Like Yang said most everyday items are not affected deeply by inflation. It’s mostly education, healthcare, and real estate affected deeply by inflation is it not? 🤔

@@leggomyeigonosensei You're a rare site. Finding an American who can say Keynesian without needing to follow it with vitriol is such a site for sore eyes. It's not surprising since "free market" think tanks have been popping up since the 40's. There is a terrifyingly interconnected history between the free market think tanks and the evolution of "American thought". The Mont Pelerin society for instance, their members stacked the selection committee for the "Nobel Prize" in Economics, the same prize which during the 70's/80's was being routinely given to fringe free market economists while mainstream, post-Keynesian, economists were ignored. The Mont Pelerin society was formed by many of the economists who were awarded that "Nobel Prize" and with funding from the Foundation for Economic Freedom, America's first free market think tank. This all gave rise to an increased consciousness around free market ideas, and gave them an air of legitimacy they did not have in academic circles within the study of economics. This allowed for the rise of the Heritage Foundation in the 70's, which gained them enough legitimacy that by the 80's Reagan modelled his policies off of their publications. Fast forward to today, and the Heritage Foundation is one of the most influential think tanks in America.

Unlike anyone you probably ever voted for he voted against the Patriot Act - the rest of them would have the same as KGB was to USSR. You obviously know nothing about Bernie if you think they are the same. I would be happy to recommend some basic political theory books or a dictionary to you so you can learn the difference between a communist socialist and a social democrat. Ask any European with a brain, they could tell you too, they have social democrats throughout their government, and they had a much closer look at communism, also, than you ever would. They know the difference. It isn't hard. It takes a sheep to not even look at someone's voting history or a dictionary. Don't be a sheep.

Hell! It was hard to NOT!, elect, a radical lefty, in1970's Vermont. It's just our BAD LUCK, that this one wingnut was elected by 10 lousy votes. The things you Bernie bros, will be exposed to, about his 2nd childhood, {21-40}, that should make your hair stand up like his does, & 90% will be 100% true. So, FUKIN get used to it! I read things Bernie wrote in a local newspaper, on women, & how much they dig RAPE FANTASIES, that I wouldn't read aloud . . . anywhere! . . . frankly. His wrote another piece on :young kids playing naked, & fukin PORNOGRAPHY, that will be making the rounds soon. It CAN'T be denied this BERNIE SANDERS wrote it . . . these things are in a newspaper, with a B.S. byline right there. What I read, looks MUCH worse today because of fukin radical feminism, Harvey Weinstein, and the #MeToo, than when he wrote it in the "free love" 60's, & '70's. What Bernie has said, & written back then will come out, & from what I've seen it will kill his Democratic Socialist act, & his candidacy. AND IT SHOULD, because he really said, & thought these awful things . . . there's no way around them. The things he did, Bernie Sander's BEHAVIOR . . the way Bern treated, & acted towards other people, SHOULD MAKE MOST FOLKS FURIOUS! IT WILL ALL BE TRUE, because there is no reason to make it up. Remember the last debate? when Mr T had all of Bill Clinton's RAPE ACCUSERS in the audience? So imagine that X 20, as soon as Bernie gets the nomiation. Blame it on the Democrat Party, & our corrupt MEDIA, who never vetted a pretty scummy guy, who's crackpot ideas can't pass the Congress, much less work do what he says. KOut

Republican rescinds Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's invite to meet coal miners after it completely backfires Andy Barr, the Kentucky Republican who initially invited the 29-year-old congresswoman to his state, said at the time that local coal miners would tell her “what the Green New Deal would mean for their families, their paychecks,” while suggesting the resolution could destroy their industry. To his apparent surprise, the first-term Democrat from New York immediately accepted his invitation, saying she would be “happy” to meet the coal miners and noted her resolution provides pension payments for those who have worked in the mining industry.

I think that she is covertly taking over the Party. State Dems are sick of K-Street ex-Reps like Barney Frank and the Clinton's running their party in to the ground. They don't benefit from selling out. Amelia Warren is a head hunter, she also runs Demos, a Progressive think thank. She she probably has her team writing Executive Orders, Bills and Regulations and she has an excel file filled with appointees, that Bernie or Liz could work out of. Generally they have to use CAP or the Brookings Institute, Republicans use AEI, The Heritage Foundation or CATO. Progs need a Think Tank an Policy Research Center. Ok... I've got my own channel. Its political niche, mostly. I really haven't chosen/endorsed a candidate, myself, yet. I started out, thinking Biden could beat Trump..BUT...I've since changed my thought process, after witnessing this ENTHUSIASM FOR BERNIE SANDERS. I'm really learning, 100% towards Bernie...this enthusiasm is exactly what we need.

He's not a Socialist, he's a Democratic Socialist or as its sometimes called in other countries Social Democracy. Basically in American terms Sanders believes in FDR's New Deal ideology that the US ran on under both Democratic and Republican Presidents until the late 1970's and the world wide recession when Reagan was elected and used that as an excuse to start the trickle down politics that the US has lived under for the past 40 years under Republican and Democratic Presidents. On economic policies and anything that helped the working and middle classes both parties moved to the right and gave priority to their rich donors so their taxes were dropped and the burden of paying for things like say the military, police and food stamps were passed onto those who least could afford it and added to the national debt for future generations to pay off whilst anything off no benefit to the rich were also cut to the bone so as to cut the taxes off the rich further. Under the New Deal the Middle Class never had it so good, if you worked all week you were paid a wage you could live on but today you can work all week and still need food stamps so your kids eat, plus America has a barbaric health system based not on need but on your bank balance. God forbid you get too unwell, how disgusting and that people who claim to be Christian support this shows they've either never read the message Jesus sent to his followers or worse they knowingly ignore it. They really are hypocrites, lets hope Bernie wins.

Independent, Democrat or Democratic Socialist I don’t care. I don’t care if his label is Progressivecrat. He is fighting for the working class. Voting for anyone else is voting against your own interest unless you’re a billionaire or a corporation. He is fighting for the rights other developed countries have that have been taken away from us or that we never even had. There are South American countries that have better access to healthcare than us. Humiliating.

@@janehyden1652 Sorry he's not an official member of one of the 2 totally corrupted parties. Sorry you dislike an independent vice that isn't owned by big, banks, the arms industry and other various lobbies. Your attack is no attack at all, its actually a good thing, if you only thought about it. Look at the platform of FDR, Wallace, Truman, Martin Luther King jr and which current politician policies most reflects theirs and its Sanders. 25% of Clinton primary voters voted McCain over Obama, more than double that of Sanders voters to Trump and that was pre 2008/09 Great Recession and its last effects on the US electorate. I'm guessing your a Hillary fan, the woman who never held an ideological position unless it was politically favorable to her and your a voter that puts vagina before actual political positions. Ill stick with the guy who voted against the Iraq War, voted against NAFTA and who recently led the bill to stop support for the war in Yemen. I guess you like the warmongers.

@@1969JohnnyM Then let him start his own party. Call it the democratic socialist party. He won't do that because you clowns know you can't win. If Bernie had as much support as you think, he should be able to win with his own party.

This is one of the greatest people alive to lead human civilization. He is the type that is not afraid to plant the seeds for future prosperity. Surrounded by radical capitalists, asked on TV if he is a capitalist he said: "No. I believe in the spirit of collaboration, not in the spirit of competition". He reminds me of that Bolivian mayor woman humiliated in the streets saying "if they kill me, they kill me. For this process of change (for my people) i will give my life" ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/c56cpZVun8LLprw.html )
