Beyerdynamic DT 880 Black - Limited Edition - REVIEWED!

Ғылым және технология

If you like headphones, you already know both about Beyerdynamic and more specifically about the DT 880 headphones. They're a great combination of great sound and comfort. What's new is the limited edition all black version of the DT 880, called, ingeniously enough, the Beyerdynamic DT 880 Black.
Tech expert Dave Taylor of www.AskDaveTaylor.com/ had a chance to check out the DT 880 Black and found them just as delightful as the regular DT800, but with some improved style and design...

Black edition has black ear pads, which are different from the grey ones (thicker, -> slighly more distance to the capsule, more stiff -> bass and low mids resonate more) and 'enhance' bass response substantially. Otherwise the black edtion is built identical to the standard silver one: You can swap the ear pads of the black edition to grey ones and they will sound like the standard silver version. For critical listening and studio use I'd absolutely stay away from the black pads: Too much bass, low mids are masking the higher mids...

Thanks for the clarification on the black vs. silver. I would suggest people take your recommendation of staying away from the black for studio work / critical listening, however, because everyone's hearing is a bit different, so one person's "too much bass' is another person's 'just right'. :-)

@@AskDaveTaylor It's less the added bass which puzzled me, but rather the loss of detail in the upper midrange: It's partly covered by the low mid bump, and possibly the slightly higher 'ear to capsule' distance reduces it further. I own both, and simply changed the earpads on the black one to grey DT880 / 990 replacement pads (NOT DT770 pads, they are different, more like the black ones...). As replacement pads from Beyerdynamic are affordable, it's easy for everyone to experiment. And the black edition can be converted easily... - in general, after 1 year of regular use, pads should be replaced anyway, since they degrade (they get flatter), and with that sound is changing over time...

@@tom_k_d I've seen the frequency charts of the black and grey versions compared and they are different, exactly as you described. But you're saying that this difference comes only from the different earpads? Beyerdynamic's marketing material does say they are supposed to be the same sonically.

@@BreathInSpaceFilmz Yes, I have both and switched ear pads to grey DT880 pads on the black ones myself, which made them sound identical to the silver ones. Plus I called Beyerdynamic, and they confirmed capsules are identical. Marketing material seems misleading. Also, in general ear pads wear out and get flatter over time - they should be replaced regularly for a consistent sound quality (for the frequently used ones about once a year).

Actually to me it looks like the black pads equal more the grey DT770 pads, which are NOT identical to the DT880 pads: They are a bit thicker and stiffer...

990 is good with more bass for hiphop music and gaming experience is good with more soundstage as it it open back. 880's got good treble and transparency than 990's for classical lovers

My guess is that you won't have great results because most smartphones want 32 ohm headphones or similar. Check with the manufacturer for specific specs related to impedance and make sure it's a good match before you buy these 880's, please!

After reading your question I tried this out because I had both items on hand. In my opinion the DAC in the V30 is strong enough to push these headphones to a reasonable level, but you won't be able to just totally crank these to the max with this phone if that is what you're into. The HiFi DAC in the V30 really comes to the rescue and will give you a reasonable approximation (lacking a bit of the available gain/volume) of what you would find in a portable studio audio interface such as a Scarlet 2i which I tested these on using my mobile production rig. To really push these I have to use my RME Fireface which sounds a bit cleaner than either of the former DACs. Considering the price difference of each of these DACs I wouldn't say these headphones and the V30 are a bad combination at all. Hope this helps..

Cable replacement is very easy, given you have a good solder iron - did it several times. What I realy dislike with their cables is that they recently (2019) changed the thread of the 3,5mm to 1/4 adapter from 8mm (studio standard: used by Sony, Sennheiser, AKG, AT...) to 5mm - on all their models! It's highly annoying when you have many cans circulating at your workspace, and always need this one special adapter for this one one new Beyerdynamic, while all other adapters are interchangeable...
