SPOILERS BELOW, READ AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION From what I’ve read, there is a lot of debate regarding Ranni’s moral compass and motivations. In my opinion, Ranni’s vision is quite methodical, almost agnostic in style. When she says she’d “have the certainties of sight, emotion, faith, and touch... all become impossibilities”, she is NOT advocating for depriving the world of such concepts, but rather making it so that the divine stops micromanaging the mundane so much (dismantling the idea of “life, and souls, and order” being “tightly bound together”). She plans to have her order in the sky, both honouring her family’s traditions of looking to the sky for divination and deviating away from the pervasive demonstrations of the Golden Order’s power via the Erdtree and the strong presence of the demigods. I believe this is largely informed by her firsthand experience with how broken and oppressive the system of the Golden Order is. The marriage of her parents (Radagon and Rennala) was a political one, since Caria was rebelling against the Erdtree and their union would quell the warfare between the two factions. Radagon’s later remarriage to Marika left Rennala deeply depressed, reducing her to a shadow of the mighty sorceress she once was. While her children (Radahn, Rykard and Ranni) were elevated to demigod status due to Radagon being consort to Queen Marika (and Ranni herself was made Empyrean aka heir to Marika herself), it is hard not to see all this as a deliberate political tactic to keep Caria compliant, at the cost of Rennala’s wellbeing. This abandonment was likely a major factor in Ranni turning against the Golden Order, seeing as she was so protective of her mother when the Tarnished fought the latter. It may have also caused tensions between her and her brothers, since they continued to serve their father and the Golden Order (though Rykard would eventually dabble in blasphemy and help Ranni in her own agendas). Refusing to become another pawn of the GO, Ranni stole a fragment of the Rune of Death and enlisted the Blackknife Assassins to forge weapons capable of killing demigods, in order to cast away her own body and be free of the GO’s influence. This led to the assasination of her half-brother Godwyn, resulting in Marika shattering the Elden Ring, distributing the shards among her descendants (both by blood and marriage) and instructing them to battle amongst themselves to determine the next ruler. Many Elden Ring fans believe that Ranni is one of (in not THE) worst character in the game due to how her actions were linked to countless deaths and misfortunes (particularly Godwyn, who many believe did nothing wrong to warrant his death). Godwyn’s true moral integrity is unclear since we know next to nothing about him; although he was likely involved in the slaying of countless dragons before befriending Fortissax, so at the very least he is complicit in the oppressive system of his parents. Regardless of his morality and whether Ranni specifically targeted him or not, I do not believe his death alone makes her “the worst character in the game”, especially when plenty of her peers have committed worse crimes in MUCH crueller ways (eg Mogh and Godrick). Even Marika herself is directly responsible for the genocide of the giants and the decline of the dragons, just to name a few of the MANY races native to The Lands Between who were deposed when the Erdtree rose to power. Furthermore, I do not believe Ranni should be held responsible for what was ultimately Marika’s actions. As queen/goddess, Marika had a responsibility to all living things in The Lands Between, yet chose to invoke a catastrophic power struggle between them which has left the world on the brink of destruction after centuries of violence. Yes she was devastated by her son’s death which is valid, but to then make her OTHER children fight and kill each other in response to that feels very irrational. It is also worth mentioning that Ranni’s brothers Rykard and Radahn both met brutal fates as a result of the Shattering, which may have further fuelled her distain for the GO. Ranni seems to use her privilege to try and dismantle the system by any means necessary; this includes accepting the odd collateral damage in the name of the greater good. This approach isn’t morally perfect but it’s certainly not evil or cruel, especially in comparison to the agendas of other characters. She may not be a saint, but I do believe many fans are over-exaggerating how bad her actions were by omitting crucial context. Her vision, to me, seems to be to let ALL living things in The Lands Between have the freedom she herself so deeply covets. This requires removing the glaring presence of the divine from everyday life which will mean people can no longer take faith for granted, perhaps leading them to feel lost, confused and lonely. However it will be much more meaningful when they unknowingly look up to the sky for her order’s guidance, because they are CHOOSING to believe rather than being forced to by a tangible, looming force. Many argue against this outcome because it’s “irresponsible” to leave the world in chaos, ignoring the fact that it was the Golden Order and its players that wreaked havoc on the world for millennia through their colonisation of The Lands Between and then the Shattering and its 5,000+ year fallout. It’s a bittersweet outcome, but in my opinion it’s a necessary one for the longevity of The Lands Between and all its residents.

I know right? Most of it involved me being the medieval equivalent of a himbo, and her being very eloquently spoken to the point of seeming emotionless. Nonetheless, it was a lot of fun to do this questline 😂💚
