Beware The Thai Gem Scam

Ойын-сауық

Conor is targeted by one of Thailand's oldest scams. He is repeatedly told to visit the Export Centre to take advantage of the annual sale. There, he should buy black sapphires, which are being sold for a fraction of their "true value". To find out more, Conor interviews a man from New York who tells him a similar story and the truth about the rings.

    Isn't it common sense, to NOT buy anything seemingly expensive, in places you're not familiar with? The most expensive thing I would buy as a tourist, is a pair of flip flops.

    NY Brit I didn't know that! So, the merchant eats the bad transactions! I thought, banks just write it of as a loss. Seen a doc. about it on TiVi, banks write off some $100 million every year for credit card fraud.

  • @John-iv2oz

    Actually the banks do and don't write it off. What they do is except it as the cost of doing business but slip that cost into all the fees and the poor interest rates that we all get to deal with. YOU and the rest of us pay for each and every day we get a crappy return on our saving accounts, our checking account fees and the high interest rates on our credit cards. So they do write it off and then they do not write it off. Luck us. The merchant got paid by Visa, Master card or AMX almost immediately and long before you filed a complaint usually.

    My brother bought a ruby from a certified gem shop in bangkok. He also got a certificate for the gem proving the quality and specification of the gem he bought. When he returned home to jakarta he brought the ruby to a local gem centre and was shocked when the shop sold the ruby of the same size and quality only one tenth of the price he paid in bangkok. So beware!!!

    As a decedent of an ancestor who was a Thai "royal jewelry appraiser" or "Luang wijitjaeranei" not sure how the title translates to English exactly... or how it would be spelt... :P (sorry my Thai is poor got sent to school in England when I was a kid). I'm also very ashamed :( Makes me wish my family was still in the Jewelry business. Especially since our family surname is a constant reminder of our past in the trade... For the none Thais who are interested to know a little bit more about some lesser known Thai customs... It was seen as an honor to have a surname composed for you by the royal court "a palace-given name" I think only about 200 families have them currently since they are usually only given for some exceptional service to the Thai Crown. Ours was given when my ancestor gifted the king (I believe it was King Rama VI but I could be wrong) with a rather large priceless Ruby from a mine the family owned back then... At least that's the story I was told about how our family got the surname... :/

  • @anakinlumluk2136

    @anakinlumluk2136

    abmong Woah! That's a prestigious surname. King Rama VI was the king who imposed the very first surname policy to the citizens of Thailand. So yeah, your ancestors have pleased his majesty well.

  • @abmong

    @abmong

    +Anakin Lumluk Funny thing is I wasn't born with that surname since it's my mother's maiden name. My maternal grandfather only had daughters no sons so my Mum got my dad to agree to having me use her maiden name to preserve it (since I'm the second son). Crazy thing is my parents got divorced and my mother got married again to a distant cousin of hers who I've always known as an uncle... (yeah a bit incestuous, but it's not like they're first cousins so it's not too bad). They don't plan to produce any more children since they're getting quite old now... thing is my step father/uncle... never had a son either so he wants to officially adopt me and have me use his surname to preserve it... which historically speaking is even more prestigious than my mother's maiden name that I'm currently using. Problem is I don't want to upset my biological father by taking on my step-dad's surname... My step-dad's a descendant of a Persian mercenary Commander who was elevated to Thai nobility and given the military peerage rank of Phraya Phakee, by King Narai if I remember the story correctly... I find the whole situation a bit weird... Not really sure what to do :/

    abmong To be frank, surnames don't carry much weight nowadays unlike as they did before in Thailand. Especially in foreign territories, I would say the surname isn't a matter at all. But since you are living outside of Thailand, you should stick to the surname that has a good reputation there. I doubt if the people there will even know your surname or not. But here in Thailand, that's is a very valuable surname.

  • @abmong

    @abmong

    True True... I'm living in England at the moment so no one here has a clue about Thai surnames anyway so it wouldn't matter which surname I use :) I do plan to come back to Thailand at some point, maybe to start an import/export business between the UK and Thailand so if I can make a good impression and get better business connects in Thailand things would go smoother. I would've thought even in Thailand these days surnames doesn't really much weight unless it's a royal surname. I'm more interested In preserving the history of the surnames and not letting disappear than anything, just for the sake of family tradition. But if I can use it to my advantage I'm not going to complain :p I've got my family to help with business connections anyway since they all live in Thailand. I just stayed in England longer than expected after finishing school and university here :)

    I was walking to Wat Tramit in BKK only last week and everyone who I asked directions told me I wouldn't like it and to go to a fashion store. Four different people between Si Lom metro and the Temple kept saying ''fashion, you want fashion'' and pointed me to the same small mall... One was a Policeman, I couldn't understand it, I was asking myself are they all working together, or what is going on, I was so confused. An old random man, a Policeman, a woman at a stall and a 7/11 employee, all told me the same thing, it was so odd... like groundhog day....needless to say, I didn't go...and I did like the Temple

    I had a similar thing happen. I went to BK on my own when I was 19. The second day there a tuk tuk driver told me that if I went to one of these jewel stores he would give me the ride for 10 BHT (from 30). So thinking I had a good deal I did it. Inside the jewel stores I saw many other western tourists all being pressured into buying. When I refused several times to buy anything they took me down a back stair case and kicked me out!

    Stayed in a hotel In Florida near Disney springs once. One night,returning from a very tiring day of waiting in line for everything at Disney, we find a menu that's been slipped under our room door. GREAT deals on pizzas. We get lucky and decide to just call it a night bc it was late and by the time the pizza got to us it wouldve been past midnight. The next morning we ask the concierge if that particular pizza place was any good...HE FRIGHTENINGLY responded with a DID U ORDER ANY? No why. ITS A HUGE SCAM, the fbi got involved recently and thought this was over after they caught a guy during a stakeout. If you call that number u just get ur information stolen . Its not a real pizza place. I was like wooooooow. Mind u these menus looked well done. Like a real business would have.and not being a local, I wouldn't have known that big papa's pizza wasn't real. Always be suspicious of everything when traveling.

    I also got tricked but it was a different story , I was on my was by walk to siam paragon at 9 and when i pass the shortcut a tuktuk guy came to us and told that the siam gate opens at 10 and he recommended to go to other places first for only 250 baht , he said to go to the famous floating market donmuang and it was a one hour trips , he told us that he did not know how much the ticket cost and he said that siam on that day at 1pm will have sale so we took the offer coz it was really cheap for a far journey , but when we got there , the ticket was fckng 6000 baht per boat , i only brought 3000 at that time and 6000 baht for a market is weird af , he lied about not knowing the price so he could took us , he also lied that the siam has sale , when we were already on the way to donmuang then he told us that the sale is not today but when Thai’s birthday ! I refuse to buy the ticket that does not make sense and he directly seemed panic he told us that but we already went so far away so i kept on bargain to the ticket seller and got 2500 baht STILL for a fucking market, i did not know that tuk tuk trips GETS commissions every time they took tourist to some places , the pretend not to know the price , lie about the place you are going is closed and other more , after from don muang we were supposed to go to the train market but i told him no just send us home , then the trip home he became suddenly quiet , while at the time when we were on the way to don muang he kept telling how awesome that place was ! I mean like YES ! , it was a beautiful place but THE PRICE WAS JUST SO BIG , then he suddenly offered again to go to this honey place he said that this time you wont need to pay but if you go there he will get 1 liter of fuel and if i buy the honey he’ll get 10liter of fuel , i thought that it was free and i already knew that it was a scam but i helped him anyways like 1 liter fuel is not bad i mean it’s free right? And then he fcking told us that over there you can see how honey bees are made , the process and more BUT I WAS ALL JUST BULLSHIT , when we fckng got there IT DIRECTS YOU TO THE SHOP ! NO BEE SEEING , NO PROCESS MAKING , JUST SELLING HONEY LIKE WTF AND THE HONEY WAS 3000 BAHT WTF MAN I KNEW THAT HE WAS SCAMMING SO I ONLY BOUGHT 300 baht SOAP , when i went out the first thing he saw at me was what i carried at the plastic bag and when he saw that we did not buy honey he was like “no honey?” YES NO HONEY 4 U ! And the way home was just silence that fckng dude made me waste SO MUCH MONEY AND TIME ! My plan was all ruined ! And today i got back to siam paragon at the 8th in the morning AND THE GATE IS OPEN IT IS NOT CLOSED IT’S NOT EVEN 10 AM YET THAT LIAR!

    It is the job of any business to get as much money as they can for their products. It is the job of the consumer to be responsible for their purchases. If one paid too much for jewelry, they have only themselves to blame.

    I guess these scams happens (maybe) in all tourist places. I often have been personally approached by people who use these sort of scams, in places that I´ve visited. I´m lucky that I use my common sense and never get greedy.

    One pretty simple method, look for Jewel Fest Club (JFC) emblem and membership and if the store does not have it then avoid like the plague as you WILL get ripped off (JFC was started in 95 by the tourist police and the Thai Gem and Jewellery Traders Association to certify good quality etc, also ask for a cert of authenticity from the Gem and Jewellery Institute of Thailand (GIT) or the Asian Institute of Gemological Science (AIGS) (it isnt legit if they do not have one and make SURE it is for that stone and is recent) (The real area is the Jewellery Trade Centre which is on Silom Road ) DO ask for a VAT receipt... it is a 10 billon dollar a year industry and you can get v.good deals but if you are not a pro then be wary even in legit places same as any jewelry store they are out to make money

    I don't know if I'd call it a scam. Jewelry is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it and the markups at the retail level tend to be very significant.

    Hi, has anyone ever been charge you a fee at Thailand airline when coming home ? because that what happened to my mom and her friends when they were coming home from Thailand. My mom said that when her friends and her got to the custom checks out at Thai airline they were given the option to have their stuff check there or in the United States. So my mom and her friends decided to have it check in the States instead; then the security told my mom and her friends that they have to paid 500 bahts fees each. when my mom ask them why are they being charge 500 baht; the security told my mom that they're being charge for visiting their Country. Just wondering if is it a scam or not? Thank you.
