Beware of Hybrid Phoenix canariensis! Date Palm Hybrids.

I found a Duo of hybridize date palms that I wanted to share to show not all date palms are created the same. When looking for one of these make sure you get a pure species with a fat trunk!

The Phoenix canariensis is the most beautiful plant on Earth! It looks like a firework explosion caught in mid-BANG! But I hate when they're manicured and made to look like dopey-looking poodles. I like a full and natural crown of fronds. Nature knows what looks best, not some schmuck with a trimmer.

Pity the hybrids aren't more readily available over here in Ireland. The quick growth and slimmer truck would be a welcome change from the pineapple trunked we have.

Fantastic video for somebody learning about palm varieties. Thanks, I've been very suspicious of the canary palms in my neighborhood because they don't compare at all to the trunk size of what I suspect to be a 45 year old true Pheonix canariensis in my neighbors yard. I've also notice that the foliage and inflorescences are much tighter and more compact on the true species when compared to rupicola and other hybrids.

Many of them are highly sought after, especially when P. canariensis hybridizes with P. roebellini!

I have bought 7 baby hybrids Phoenix dactylifera X canariensis, obtained by seeds harvested on female Phoenix dactylifera pollinated by male Phoenix canariensis... even babies, they show both characteristics of dactylifera and canariensis ! In this video we can see a dominance of the Phoenix canariensis characteristics, consequently they are probably F2 or F3 hybrids (90% canariensis and 10% rupicola or dactylifera).

Being from Southern California, it is sad watching all of our Phoenix Canariensis dying due to the recent South American Palm Weevil infestation. Also, coupled with the fact that Fusarium Wilt is very common here, we will likely see an extinction of true Phoenix Canariensis in the area. Hybridized palms are much more resistant to these diseases and make a lot more sense to plant.

whats your thought on trimming? i have two very mature at my house. i do not remove the bark or the ferns growing out of the bark. i like the natural way they look instead of butchering them with a chain saw.

they always seem to have quite a bit of yellowing in their fronds, seems like they need water or are exposed to too much sun

Hey christian I was wondering if you could make a video showing how seeds grow up wildly next to palm trees because I look it up and can never find what ip looking for.

I wouldn't say this was a terrible problem; a slightly smaller palm that grows faster is not offensive.

It can be hard to tell until they get much larger to determine girth. It is best to figure out where they originally came from.

Seeing as the hybrids are much rarer, shouldn't the price for them be higher not lower? It is almost impossible to find hybrids for sale. Do you know anybody that is selling them? I would love to get a specimen palm like that for my yard because noone else would have one. Also I highly doubt that those are hybrids with rupicola seeing as even finding a pure rupicola is very very hard, so finding a hybrid would be next to impossible.

In the case of Phoenix, the problem is that the hybrids are very hard to keep consistent. Sometimes the pollen of 3 different Phoenix will pollinate another plant, so getting them to look the same regularly is not easy. People will pay a bit more for very good hybrids though. Rupicola can hybridize naturally in habitat, and there are dozens in this neighborhood. You would be surprised how many pure rupicola are out there....for now :)

I had a bought a Rupicola for my last house, there are only two growers in South Florida that sell them field grown (Botanics Wholesale and Native Tree Nursery). And aside from the one I planted in my own house, I have only ever seen them growing in Botanical Gardens, never on people's gardens or public streets. Where are these Rupicolas? Are you sure they aren't reclinatas or hybrids? Rupicolas have a very distinctive tropical bright green color and they are the only species in the genera where the leaves sit flat along the petiole. But regarding where I can buy Phoenix hybrids, that was a serious question, I want to buy one but cannot find anywhere that sells them. Do you know of a place? Id rather get one in a 25 gallon pot size.
