I started attending opera in the 1970s when I was in college. And amazingly, I saw both Beverly Sills in Puritani at the NYC Opera, and Joan Sutherland at the Met. It was long before the days of subtitles, so I was pretty clueless as to what was going on. But I knew I was hearing some extraordinary singing from both of those legends.

It's lovely to see Sills, but sad to think that by this point she was most likely already riddled with the cancer that killed her less than 7 months later.

Rubini, the creator of the tenor role Arturo in 1835, could sing the part and all of its high notes in spades, readily. there. mystery solved. Bev should have done a modicum of research.

I'm sure if Bev had bothered to get off her tush and do a modicum of research this commentary would have taken on a completely different hue and had us all gripping our seats. Thank you for solving the mystery.

In Rubini's day, tenors used falsetto when in the upper register. The kind of full-throttle, from-the-chest high C audiences thrill to today was unknown.

To even suggest Beverly is a dumb flake and knew nothing about an opera that she not only sang on stage but recorded as well is the ultimate insult to an extremely intelligent lady. Beverly researched every opera she sang in and who cares if Rubini sang 73 million high g's?
