Looking good Matt. Sometimes you just have to stop and think about things, sometimes you need to walk away too. When you come back with a clear head things fall into place. Keep smilin
Matt, I’ve been watching every single video of the restoration, and they’re not only very entertaining to me but I’ve learned so much from your methodical approach to putting every little part together. I’m extremely proud of your workmanship

Not to take anything away from Matt, because this is his first attempt at restoring a D4, but if you want to see the job from start to finish done by a man who is dedicated to D2 & D4 restorations and knows those dozers inside out, then go to the "Squatch253" channel and get educated by the best, bar none.

@@theshadow4292 I’m not personally interested or involved in any farm equipment since I’m a city man, but I have a lot of admiration for Matt and everything that he is sharing with his followers as he continues to make the best he can, so thoroughly despise of not being the most knowledgeable restorer, for all the viewers to enjoy such a marvelous series of challenges putting this machine back together. It’s so satisfying to watch his progress! And that’s all I have to say

I was only thinking last night.. I wonder when the next video is out, i've been hanging 😀
Those bevel gears are called Zerol bevel gears. They are spiral bevel gears with a spiral angle of zero degrees. This gives the advantage of spiral bevel gears having a smoother tooth to tooth contact, but also having equal thrust forces in either direction. A gear set like in a car, for 99% of the time, is going to turn in one direction. The thrust forces can be more easily accounted for in that case, so they can use a spiral angle of higher than 0 degrees. In a dozer it’s more like you said, 50-50 forward and back. Thrust forces in this case I believe mean the gears are going to want to pull in, or push away from one another.
Aw heck yeah!! I've been looking forward to this. I was even looking in the unlisted videos for updates. Thanks Matt!!! Great content as usual!
Matt is a first class engineer of that there is no doubt, he leaves nothing to chance checks everything he does over and over again. When finished this project will be at least equal to or even better than ex-factory.
Great job on that bearing cap locating pin. I absolutely would have lost my fecal matter over that relatively simple issue. I particularly like your choice of replacement pin. Well worth a sitdown moment with choice of liquid refreshment. Looking forward to next episode.

Hey - the long round punch was good choice 👍 & novel pick!!

Of course simply returning the pin to the correct depth after exposing the weld end and then re-welding would have been too straight forward and had a proper fit instead of mucking about cobbling up a farmerized version of the dowel pin.

@@deconteesawyer5758 Removing the recessed pin for inspection is sensible, given it was somehow recessed with bruit force. Then it's minimal additional effort to upgrade to a longer pin that hasn't attempted to be drilled.
Doing a sterling job there Matt. I have followed your adventure from the start and it's getting to the really good bit now seeing all your hard work (and it is hard on your own, I know) come together. Keep at it bud👍👍
To a layman like me, a supposedly simple device, planned and constructed way before the electronic age, is remarkably complex when deconstructed, renovated then reconstructed. The series is a real eye-opener! Well done, Matt. You'll be able to work at a quarry soon, fixing D11s and other substantial stuff! (Sorry, I just heard the muttered denial!)
I like the way you step back, when you're running into an issue, to analyze what may be going on. You've done it several times throughout this series and it's proven to be to your advantage. Your ability to research and understand the process is very impressive. Great content. Thank you for making these videos.
Good quality fitting procedure. Cheers from Australia🇦🇺🇦🇺
Yep, backing away and thinking is good practice. Also sitting and staring for a long time at the project while sipping coffee or a good beer will usually bring on an epiphany that solves the problem. Really enjoy this rebuild series.
Pleased that I discovered this project of yours early on. You have a very careful and thought-out way of ‘winging it’. Looking forward to the next video.
I like how you got all Project Farm on that rubber glue! I think it’s gonna hold.
Living life and working on stuff takes time, you're doing a jam up job, can't wait till your next video.
The way this came apart, with every loosened bolt revealing new carnage I'm afraid for you that you'll find more trouble in the tracks. She's definitely served a lifetime of hard work.
This is the only thing I’ve ever actually followed on KZread.
Nice to see you buddy……..you’re explained very well…Your video watching from India 🇮🇳
Matt, I’ve found myself looking for your next video even though the likelihood of me ever picking up a wrench is slim. Lots of fun for us viewers, entertaining and educational. Thanks much and best regards.
30 minutes goes by so quick. Great videos. Thank you for showing.
*- Hurrah for the paint. Hurrah for a job well done, Matt. Hurrah for a huge accomplishment ! ! !* *- I find myself so pleased for you.* *- Somehow, seeing the bright paint keeps my spirits up when you are struggling with finicky issues.* *- Isn't that odd. I don't know if it works that way for you, but it sure does for me.*
The workmanship is bar non. Painting, it is nothing more than pride in the work. I’m mechanic by trade, I understand the work going into this. 100 percent Grade A work!! Great job and can’t wait see finished product!
You appear to have the perfect disposition to accomplish this overhaul task of your dozer. Patient and thoughtful while demonstrating excellent common sense while approaching each challenge. You've and most of us watching have seen the consequences of half ass repairs. I'm really looking forward to you lighting that baby off and enjoying the first drive.
I laughed when u said natural life...I only knw u thru utube but im so proud wht you've accomplished..some scarry moments
This is my favorite series on KZread- always anxiously waiting for the next episode! Keep up the good work, sir! And thank you!
Soon you will have a new 70-year-old dozer, awesome. Happy New year to you and Charley!
It's good to see you again, she's getting together real fine... you've learned a lot about this machine. 👍
Nice to see a new video for 2022! Looking forward to more as this beast goes back together!
Dude I’m super stoked to see that cat going back together. Nice to see Charlie got her a new blanket. I’m super impressed to see that glue held that rubber seal together. I want to see this machine rolling!! Good luck from Texas
Really appreciate you sharing this project. It's great content and you're a natural behind the camera. Cheers!
Loving this build series you're doing a top job of it all! it's good to see the pup in the episodes doggo's are awesome value, looking forward to the next vid as im sure it will be a fun one. Might be a polite thing to give that embroidery business a plug, that looked like a nice blanket and as im sure you'd know all business needs all the help they can get at the moment.... Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing..
Well worth the wait for this segment to post. It's incredible how you figure out all the issues you have to hurdle to get everything to mesh together with so little to go on. You're lucky that guy who sold it to you is there with little snippets of info to help. Won't be long and you'll be pushing first this spring or summer. Depending on the weather of course.
Awesome video, Matt! Thank you and we are eagerly awaiting for your next video. Keep up the great work!
Very impressive restoration, the quality of the video work & the explanatory commentary is superb & puts many "so called" professionals to shame. Thoroughly enjoying this series & really looking forward to you getting stuck into the Hitachi excavator project.
The worst part is over and this video will server as learning material for others. Really love how it all came together.
I'm impressed in what you have done and hooked on every segment. Good job!
Whatever your day job is they are lucky to have such a talented patient analytical guy. Good luck!
You took a big bit into this project, an I'm a old mechanic an engine builder an see your doing a great job with this Caterpillar...
Love your videos. Can't wait for the next one. Peace brother
You explain stuff very well and not afraid to say you messed up on something. And you research well. Thanks
Nice to see it going back together.
Fun to watch and learn - my father has a ‘59 international crawler loader that he rebuilt the wet steering clutches - Now ready to rebuild / weld up the track & roller assemblies. Thanks for the hard work 😓 and keeping the work to the highest quality!! From somewheres in SWMO-
You're doing a great job! I like the way you explain your thought process and show the steps.
Take your time don’t rush. Enjoying watching. God bless. Kansas
Steering clutches look like a piece of jewelry, beautiful resto. Your patience and mechanical attitude is the guide for a successful resto. Super glue does come in handy, especially when you cut yourself. Nice blanket for Charlie! Hopefully all the small snags are done, BUT, it is a tractor. Looks good Matt! KUTGW!
Hey Matt happy new year to you and your family. Being a mechanic and working on all makes and models of vehicles from lawnmowers to earthmoving equipment it's a real treat to watch your series on this build. Always waiting for the next installment to drop. Seeing your attention to detail and problem solving skills is refreshing. Keep up the great work you are doing we all appreciate your efforts and great content!!!
Great content keep up the awsome videos good to see the old girl getting rebuilt
Thanks a lot Matt for another excelent video!!... God blest you and your friends in UUEE!!... best regards from Santiago of Chile, SouthAmerica!!
'Tis a thing of beauty.' Happy New Year Matt.
I too have watched every video and I have sincere respect for your methodical approach as you conquer each problem! I truly wish that you were my neighbor so that I could work for you to do the little tasks which could accelerate your progress I congratulate your for your tenacity as you climb this huge mountain of success.
I really love watching this build. Maybe I should have been a mechanic instead of a dentist!
Great to see the transmission void no more , coming along in leaps and bounds .
Looks like deep snow ,I in BC a and we have lots this year . as an old retired mechanic,I’m impressed with the way you approach the assembly ,keep up the good work 🤔can’t wait for the next episode !
Nice job Matt! Now that you're "earning your boots" on this Cat Im willing to bet that you got "CAT FEVER" there just maybe a D-8 laying around waiting for a guy like you to come along and rescue her! Wont hurt to just go take a peek! LOL!
That cover popped absolutely perfect.
kick butt, looking good next thing coming soon the sound of it starting. excellent craftsmenship
Hey dude - me and the wife cant wait for the next few videos - we literally binge watched every single one after discovering this last month, what an insane mission man - i envy your patience and mild manners and endurance! I work on machines all day and on occasion a tool might go flying - cant believe youve just kept on pushing thru!! Also delighted to watch someone else doing all the hard work from our couch - we are very much anticipating the next vids.. i wish you all the best and plz stop banging your fingers up! now a tip i was going to write about was the permatex non hardening sealer (i see you discovered it) - excellent stuff, use it at the shop ALL the time! Many other brands but they all work the same- you can usually remove and dont have all the RTV to deal with.. weatherstrip is also great to tach rubber seals in place quickly - few drops of oil between any double lip seal helps lube it and lube it too.. You've done a wonderful job man! Seattle was the 2nd home for me when i was still travelling around the US - get some clear vinyl snap covers for the drivers cage so you can work in all the PNW weather and stay dry- We are pining to see this thing run at last!!!

Thank you for sharing and lettings us view your project, looking nice and I'm happy to just set back and watch :) I thought a use of source of sealant or adhesive to help, but it is a learn project and do your best. Keep it going and was nice to see the Snow.... :) :)
So glad to see you putting things together.
Another awesome video. Thanks for sharing.
Love the down to earth explorations of everything...easily understood and the video shots are superb...thank you for pitting the camera on a tripod so you can actually use both of your hands on this very heavy job..😀😀😀😀😀
Another great video, when the next owner has a WTF moment they’ll be able to watch these.
This is the coolest series I have watched yet. Gonna be sad when it ends. You have so much insite on the project, such as placing a piece of the gasket in diesel fuel for demonstration later. I would have never thought of doing that. Keep up the good work and really enjoying the series.
Another great video Matt. Been looking forward to an update on this build. I’m a transmission builder here in Australia and I’d be happy with how you’ve sealed that internal case cover. Keep up the awesome work mate. 🇦🇺👍🇺🇸
The adjusting bolts underneath are used when adjusting the band brakes and keep the bands close to the drum to avoid excess pedal travel, same as a lot of tractors. Normally screw in gently until it is felt bands contact drum and then back off half to one turn and lock off. This is done before adjusting brake pedal travel. cheers
I admire and appreciate your problem solving skills. Thanks for sharing this rebuild with us
Watching Sqautchs old videos. I believe that “dragging” adjusting bolt keeps the band centered so it doesn’t wear the top of the band hanging down from gravity. Pretty sure but my better half reminds me I’ve been wrong before. Happy new year!

Sounds sensible, that would also explain why he had to back them out as the linings were worn before and had obviously been adjusted upwards slightly. Fresh linings = back 'em out and start again.
I love watching you work through this project. Great job!
Nice to see it all going back together
Love hearing your thought process on this. It is always good to hear a different point of view.
Doing a good job there Matt. Making it pretty plain to me that i have to get off my butt and do the same thing to a couple my old broken down dozers now. Inspirational! Cheers
Glad to see the new video have been curious about the progress. Love the commitment to the old iron and looking forward to more about it
Really like this series. Thanks so much for all the effort to film/explain/edit.
Wow, binged the whole series so far, epic restoration, well done
Matt, I want you to start thinking about your next project soon. I need to keep watching your videos - they must not stop! Sure is cool to see all that yellow coming together - I know it will the running soon....
Beautiful job Matt and I really appreciate the time it takes to make these videos, keep up the good work!
Great video, you're very resourceful in problem solving. Well done.
You have shown such determination and adaptability, I applaud you
Glad you made it back.
From the Eastern Oregon side of the state good work.
Thank you , for your attention, to detail and taking the time to explain! Very cool!😀👍👍👍

Man I impressed with your knowledge of this job!! Well done.
Great to see another part in this series. Love the rebuild. Has always Liked and all my best.
Nice video Matt! I enjoy seeing the Cat get rebuilt. Much hard and heavy work and very detailed procedures. There are so many bits and pieces to this machine! Stay with it... looks like you are 'over the hump' to getting it finished! 👍
Matt you are a wonderful analytical type mechanic. This will be a great tractor by the time you are through.
I really enjoy your work and look forward to the next episode!
I just found your page on Monday and I’ve watched every video of the D4 build. So now I will go back and start from the beginning and watch your other videos. But I must say Matt your a very intelligent guy and your kicking butt on this D4 build. It’s nice to see consistent videos and progress being made. Keep up the great work.
So cool to see it finally coming back together, I bet you were beginning to think you would never get there! Great job I can't wait to see it driving.
That is one hell of a project way to go love the videos Thanks I'll keep watching
And another excellent video!! I really look forward to each one. I am very impressed with your patience and attention to detail. When you are done you will be able to experience the exact same thing as the guy that first used this when it was brand new!! Art
