BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME on How Their Fans Shaped A New Chapter Of The Band & More| Metal Injection

Музыка

Frank sits down with Tommy and Paul of Between The Buried and Me to get playfully deep about writing Colors II during the quarantine, the relationship between both records, how the pandemic affected the writing on the album, working with anxiety and depression, how they go about writing such technical material entirely via file sharing and text, how their fans fueled a new chapter of the band, how they went about choosing their first single on the album, what they’ve learned about themselves in the last 20 years of being a band and the feeling of reflecting on it, what they’re planning for the anniversary shows coming up and much more!

On what Frank said about the emotion in their music... I wish I could break through to people, like their song Ad A Dglgmut suggests, and help them see - and feel - the incredible emotional experience that they're missing from Between The Buried And Me. It requires patience, an inquisitive and open mind, some free time (probably the hardest for us to come by these days), and.. a sincere want to listen. Maybe even a need to listen. I hope if even just one person I show a snippet of Mordecai or Selkies or Lunar Wilderness or, now, The Future is Behind Us, is able to see the beauty in the whole thing, and they'll come back for more, for the emotions it made them feel. The music is some of the most powerful, and not just because it's heavy metal.

Paul talking about age and time around 24:53 is so scary and true. I interviewed Tommy during the tour with Mastodon around the release of the Colors Live album. I remember asking him about his perspective on the band, his music and the future as he turns 30 (seeing as we are about the same age and at the time 30 felt "old"). Paul said exactly what I've been thinking too as someone about to turn 40... Anyway, I just hope these guys can keep the energy up for another 20 years or so. A week or two ago in the middle of the night I listened to The Great Misdirect in full, since I knew they’d be playing it on the tour, and before the record was even over I found myself impulse-buying a ticket to their Nashville show. All I’d heard prior was Colors and then I got back into em after hearing the new singles, so I’m having fun familiarizing myself more before I go see them.

I really liked Coma Ecliptic, Automata kind of bounced off me though. That said they haven't put out anything I would consider bad, the Parallax EP and LP are my personal favorites and I have a ton of good memories tied to that music, but I still go back to CE and give it a spin from time to time.

  • @TheOldSchoolCrisis

It wasn't that they felt like they "need another landmark album" it is that they felt like they were in another point in their career where this album was either going to hit and hit hard, or they might not have the energy to continue. There is a lot with this album that ties it back to Colors. There are lyrics, motifs, riffs, pacing, etc. that all tie back to the old album while still being entirely its own thing. This album is a clear path forward standing on the building blocks of the original album. If you haven't listened to it yet and you are a fan of Colors, go back and listen to the first album, then give it a spin. You will be pleasantly surprised at how much they tie together.
