LYRICS:
When I was younger, so much younger than today
I never needed anybody's help in any way
But now these days are gone, I'm not so self-assured
Now I find I've changed my mind
I've opened up the doors
Help me if you can I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me
And now my life has changed, in oh so many ways
My independence seems to vanish in the haze
But every now and then I feel so insecure
And I know that I just need you
Like I've never done before
Help me if you can I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Oh, help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me
When I was younger, so much younger than today
I never needed anybody's help in any way
But now those days are gone, I'm not so self-assured
Now I find I've changed my mind
I've opened up the doors
Help me if you can I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Oh, help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me
Won't you please, please, help me

You should also watch John's song The Voice which he also sang at this concert. Other great Australian bands/singers are INXS, Icehouse, 1927, Cold Chisel, The Angels, Little River Band (the original band, not the current one who are just really a cover band), Skyhooks, Midnight Oil, The Divinyls, and so many more. Cheers.

They sent John a message praising of his version and said don't think anyone could've done it better Also told him it's was the intent of the song when written But the recording studios didn't think it would be popular in that version and why went for more up beat version As you alluded early in your opening So they where extremely happy with john's version Cheers guys 🦘🇦🇺👍

You really do appreciate the lyrics more when John sings it. It is definately is a plea for help in Johns version. It really made sense for it to be such a plea for help for John as he was going through a really rough time when he first recorded it. In his early career he, was managed by a guy who totally controlled his life and ran his career right down into the ground. John was pretty much a performing puppet with no say in his career. When he first recorded the song in 1980 he had finally split with his manager and was going alone and really did need help. And we all saw this as his empassioned cry for help. His fans all heard and remembered what an amazing performer he was and it was pretty much the beginning of his maturing into an adult contempory performer at the age of 30 and the boost his career needed for him to get back on track. Before that he was a teen pop idol whose star had faded .❤❤ he started in 1967 with number 1 hit Sadie and remained king of pop for 5 consecutive years from 1969 until he dropped out of favour in the mid 70's. After he recorded Help, he went on to be the lead singer of The Little River Band for 5 years before going solo again in 1986 and releasing Australia's most popular album of all time Whispering Jack oin 1987. He followed on with another string of number 1 hits for the next 40 years and has remained Australias favourite entertainer of all time .❤❤❤ I hope you'll take the time to check out some more hits from John Farnham Try his most famous song You're the Voice live with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra ❤️ 😍

John has been singing 'Help' since 1980, singing it at the Royal Charity Gala, Sydney in front of the Queen and Prince Philip, in an interview with Michael Parkinson later he said he was so nervous he forgot to do the big 'belting' HELP in the middle of the song, - 10 years later, on the Chain Reaction tour (1990) John did a 'back to back' HELP, singing the Beatles boppy version followed by his own, here's the link if you would like to listen - kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z6Jhqpmqn7yWf9o.html and 1980 gala - kzread.info/dash/bejne/hoqJ3NiIk9XHo9o.html , I really enjoyed your reaction, I hope you do a lot more of John, there is so much more to do, welcome to the Rabbit Hole and Thank you.

If John did a cover he always made it his own except for one that he never intended to record. John always made them better than the originals and this was John Lennon approved and how he wanted to sing it. I loved the Beatles but none had our John’s voice. COVID retired John followed by mouth and voice cancer that he has come through well. He is now 75 years old and I last heard him sing at 71. His voice was the same. This song was the last song at a concert of more than 2 hours of that voice. The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra love working with him and by the end of the night he will have introduced everyone on that stage because that is who he is. He is kind, funny, humble and more, he is also loved by us. This song fits John because he went through a lot of bad things before he did it. His range is huge and he sings 13 genre’s naturally including Opera. Someone just forgot to tell him he is famous until now. He still got surprised when famous singers and musicians came here to tour with him. Thank you.

John Lennon saw this performance and loved the version. He was said to have commented that this way was the way they wanted to make it in the first place. As for John, he was back in 1967 the King of Pop. He and Olivia Newton John were good friends and had a similar background having come to live in Melbourne Australia from England around the same era. They were both in the studios in Melbourne in the 1960s. If you can recall the Sydney 2000 Olympics, the opening ceremony included Liv and John singing DARE TO DREAM. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gKt9yM-MXbPTnJM.html This is them together singing PLEASE DON'T ASK ME together in 1998 kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZKmKwdaTf6fMe5s.html This is a 2.5 hour concert they did together called THE MAIN EVENT: kzread.info/dash/bejne/o5hht7WKdMiflMo.html In it they teamed up with Sydney's ''Phantom'' from Phantom of the Opera - Anthony Warlow.

Notice how far away his mike is from his mouth . Such is the vocal power of the man that he almost has it halfway down his chest and its still belting out. John can do anything , from Black Dog to opera Granada , with Anthony Warlow , he can sing anything . Just some of the people that admire John are Celine Dion , Tom Jones and it was rumored that Queen wanted him to sing after Freddie passed .

Welcome to the John Farnham bunny burrow! I'm so glad I came across your reaction - it's lovely to see John Farnham, aka Farnsey, aka The Voice, being introduced to a new audience. This concert with the MSO is from 1989, and I had the privilege of attending when the tour came to Brisbane. I was seated looking onto the orchestra, and it should be illegal for an orchestra to have that much fun - it proved my theory that inside every classical musician there's a headbanger! 😂😂😂 John had a career spanning more than 5 decades, and a vast discography of songs from every genre. He was forced into retirement 2 years ago, at age 73, with a shock diagnosis of mouth cancer, requiring the removal of half his jaw. He survived countless surgeries and a few crises and is recovering well. Many people would like to see him return to the stage, but he has nothing left to prove - I'm just happy knowing he's singing in the shower! There's an obvious follow-on from Help, and that is You're the Voice from the same concert - the song that changed forever the trajectory of his career and gave him the moniker The Voice. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aKFmz8FyhczQo9I.htmlsi=RqhhFQ2Up0kWCaDp John's vocal and genre range is ridiculous, from his portrayal of Jesus in a 1992 concert production of JC Superstar (his Gethsemane is breathtaking) kzread.info/dash/bejne/nWmr0a-TpKbSmKw.htmlsi=jNSvq14O-A1eLg75 ....to his pre- concert soundcheck, his cover of Led Zeppelin's Black Dog, captured on tape by his sound engineer. kzread.info/dash/bejne/eGaNy5iNhsyTo7g.htmlsi=gh2jRrFrj-2EUkQL

This song hits me in relation to my mother. She is in her late 70s now, dad passed away 7yrs ago. In her earlier years, she was self-sufficient, confident and could get stuff done without help. Now, she tells me how she lacks the confidence to do simple things and really needs help, but sometimes pride can get in the way and she can't always ask for it, but truly appreciates when it is given.

John Farnham went through a time of angst and depression during a hiatus in his career. "I was on the bones of my bum so it "- the coming album- "was a make-or-break thing . . . it was a tough time" This was before he released 'Whispering Jack,', THE hit album featuring the HIT song, ' You're The Voice', which catapulted him into stardom popularity once again until he retired decades later. The biography by Jane Gazzo of John's life named, 'John Farnham the untold story' is a wonderful, compelling read of this lovely and humble man's hard and glorious journey.

John wanted to learn this song on the piano (he’s not well known for playing instruments) and this is the fastest he could go without making mistakes, so he recorded it like this and you’re right, Paul McCartney said this is the way John Lennon intended it to sound but the producers or record company wanted it boppy.

This was Lennon's cry for help. He was stuck in a hard place, drugs and alcohol, possibly a bad relationship, he was being controlled by the record label and his freedom of expression was completely suffocated and almost non existent. The others were not happy either and he was depressed and felt confined. When Farnham recorded this and sent it to Lennon, he was thrilled and loved it, saying this is exactly how he originally wanted to sing it, but the label forced him otherwise. He said he had only one gripe, and that was that he didn't get to do it himself first. Not long after he was killed.

Live is best with these 2 legendary singers ( mostly ), but the official video is almost as good and still brilliant . ( 2 of the live performances are perfection, for one Jimmie was not at his best and another is just NOT a great video ). Suggest the performance for the ARIA awards ( Australia's version of the Grammy's ) or either of the 2 live performances for Hey Hey It's Saturday, a live Aussie TV variety show.

John Lennon, who wrote the song, wanted the song to performed at this tempo. He said later, "It was the producers wanted it faster." For "producers" read George Martin. He was their producer at the time.

John Lennon said at the time he wrote it , it was a cry for help, never meant to be upbeat. He preferred the John Farnham version. Tina Turner followed up later with a slow version as well after hearing John's version.

Lennon wanted it to be a ballad but the record company said no they wanted it up beat. When John Lennon heard this version of what John Farnham did before he passed and said that’s the way it was meant to be sung. 🧐🥰🇦🇺

The Beatles version was definitely about being out of control with success and a need to be grounded, but John would be about his loss of everything and possibly depression. John was bankrupt and had lost everything except his loyal wife, and the music industry had turned its back on him .....he was an industry outcast. He created this version at home and lost and never intended to perform it. The bass player for Aussie rock band, The Masters Apprentices, had discovered how much their manager was stealing from them ( same manager as John ), and decided to leave the band and manage John as best he could......he said that Johm was too talented to be forgotten and broke. Was the new manager , Glen Wheatley , who decided that they should record the cover of Help.

@@Rassskle it was recorded a couple of years before Glen became John's manager. Although they were good freinds and had been since the 60's when they were both managed by Darrell Samball. Glen as you know, realised what a turd Samball was and took over the management of his own band. Shame he didn't take on John back then. Glenn was LRB's manager at the time John was arranging his version of Help, and hooked John up with Graeme Goble, who was actually a big fan of John's. Graeme and John worked togther to produce the Unconvered album and it was John who pushed to record Help for that album and release it as the single. Glenn became John's manager just before he joined LRB in 1982

As the Camera 'closed in' at the beginning of the video, and a part of the audience was singing "Sadie, Sadie, Sadie'. Those of us who have been lucky enough to live and grow up throughout John's career, hearing his phenomenal voice, understand the path he had to travel to be accepted as a serious singer. When I first heard John sing 'Help' I was mesmerised by his voice. Now I realise that after having a 'Hit' with 'Sadie' very early in his career, his sub-conscious drew him to this song. If I remember correctly, John said after being asked how he came up with this cover; he said "I was learning to play the piano and I had to sing it slow because my piano playing was slow". Got to be some psycho-analysis in there somewhere, With the crowd singing 'Sadie' prior to John singing 'Help'. This is one of those 'Poetic' moments that you would not believe if it was written in a book !!

John has sung the full Beatles approach, with original lyrics; whereas, John's original version leaves off the first three lines from the lyrics. "I need somebody (Help) Not just anybody (Help) You know I need someone, help So much younger than today ... This is where John starts his version. This cover has more theatrics than when John first sang his version in 1980, at The Royal Variety Performance in front of Queen Elizabeth II at the Sydney Opera House.

John Lennon and Paul McCartney rarely wrote songs together. The reason so many of their songs are attributed to both of them is because of an agreement between them to do so. I think it was the brain child of George Martin. He wanted them to appear to be like Gilbert and Sullivan, Rogers and Heart, or Rogers and Hammerstein.

Most important thing first: What happened to Asaf's hair??? 🥲 It will be missed. Second, I never heard this version. I admit it's a bit strange when you just know the Beatles version, but yes, the discrepancy between the lyrics and the upbeat sound always struck me. Although there are other songs where the topics just don't fit the melody and it creates a kind of dissonance that chafes... and in a way might even draw more attention than if it fits. Damn... I think another song just came up that totally fits into the category harsh topic with uplifting melody, and I have to send that your way. Sorry 😋 That said, John Farnham's voice is truly sensational. Thank you for this video 🙂
