Here's a demo ride from a few months back of the 2020 Indian Springfield Dark Horse. I've enjoyed trying out the different Indians and this bike was no exception. Indian did a great job coming out with a competitor for the Road King. Between the two, I think it comes down to personal preference. Both have lots to offer, are wicked comfortable, and tons of fun!

As a former chief 111 owner and now a Chieftain limited 116 rider they are awesome. The challenger gearbox and power of the motor is fantastic. The handling of the scout through to the chief, ftr, Chieftain and challenger are fantastic rides so well balanced and smooth.

I tested a few Indian back before the new motors. What I noticed was the powerband was somewhere between a Harley and Japanese cruisers. So less off the line grunt but you didn't have to wrong it out either. I am 5'10" with long arms so the stock riding position was pretty much perfect for me. But I can definitely understand why you might want pullbacks.

But I just can't justify spending that kind of money for a bike ,Soooooo I'll just keep on racking up the miles on my 04 Roadstar Silverado , picked her up for 3,500 bucks and she's a real beauty , and just put on some RoadBurner Double Eagles , no baffles , K&N air intake and did a full Dynojet jet kit , and man that ol girl WOKE UP!!! Out of the Harleys you chose well, the Heritage feels weird to me because of the size difference but ultimately the ride is what counts and in that area the Heritage rides better and the Indian rides better again. I own the Road King and yes it is pretty good but its chassis and suspension setup is decades behind the Heritage or the Indian. The Indian has a Fox shock in the rear and a much more supple yet not spongy front end. Sure the Road King is a classic bike so is the Springfield Classic or the Chief Vintage for that matter (apples for apples and all that) but ultimately if you're doing the miles the mono shock bikes will be better but if you're only doing a couple of miles or you weigh under 80kg the Road King will be alright. I've done about 70,000 kilometres or 47,0000 miles on the Road King and yeah the Indian will come out on top until HD updates its Touring chassis, I am myself wondering what to do, stay HD with the Heritage or go for the Indian and a bunch of new riding gear ! Ha ha ha

You are correct in stating that they are competing, as anyone selling a product in the same market is just that, a competitor, but I don't think they have the sales numbers yet. I guess what I dislike about the Indian motorcycles is how closely they seem to mimic the existing HD models being sold in styling and appearance. The rocker boxes, and rear fender are so beyond hideous. It doesn't look good to me, but tht is just me. I like some of the Indian line up, and I REALLY dig the FTR1200. Harley has the new 1250custom flat tracker for 2021 to compete with it. The new 1250custom is alleged to have more power than the FTR1200 (120HP) while the 1250Custom is said to have 145HP, but even if it has more power the looks and other upsides of the FTR would have me pick the Indian over Harley for once in my life, but that may change when I see the 1250custom in person. Either way, I will own one of them in the next year or so!

@@CactusJack252 That is very true. They were better bikes than HD ever thought about making except for maybe the VRod. My point is leave stupid bikes to HD, they will drown in its "success", Victory should have gone a different direction. The Japanese 4 effectively killed HD and the Brit bikes. No doubt why, electric start and brakes that worked, electronics too. AMF gave HD a lifeline that got them to here. They did good for a few decades after but their fan base is dwindling fast. Victory should have done "different". Indian is more of the same crap in a dwindling market.

Road King Special and Springfield Dark Horse are super closely matched but the RKS comes out in edge with value in terms of accessory prices, and minor details. Like the RKS comes with a stock standard set of crashbars, which indian charges 410$ for the front. Indian and Harley both have a rear crashbar saddlebag protector, and Indian charges 310$ for theirs, and harley charges 250$, Then there's the oil cooler, which is stock on the Harley, but costs 310$ for the indian plus labor, because indian does not let you install it yourself and maintain your warranty. So if you tit for tat price match the bikes, the RKS is $23K, and the SDH is $23.2K Once you got into accessories though, which everyone who rides these kinds of bikes, always do... Indian starts really taking the expensive crown to heart. The RKS has more power down low and for longer, and the Indian has more power up top, but for a shorter range. Bu the RKS has the advantage of uber amounts of upgrades that the indian cant' get because IIRC the TS116 stock is just a TS111 manufactured with that bigbore cylinder set as stock. You'd get way more out of the RKS than Indian, but you could save a few bucks getting the indian if you like it stock standard.

FranBunnyFFXII I would buy the standard chieftain over the SDH. Why not get the fairing and all for pretty much the same price? You can also get the Electra glide standard for 19k

I would have to disagree with this. I got my Springfield Dark Horse for 21,000 out the door, I priced a Road King and I was at 22,000 OTD. The only mods needed were Slip-ons and an LED headlight. It comes with Mini Apes already. If I bought a Road King, I would have to first start off with changing out all the marker lights to LED (which should be standard IMO) , slip-ons, Bars, LED Headlight, I mean your are going spend a lot more out of the box with the Harley, and that's just getting it up to where the Indian is out of the gate. Because putting in LED lights all the way around isn't mods, its just what should be, plus the Indian has, ride control, tire sensors, better ride, more power, Power locking bags. It's just my opinion, but having owned both the Indian is the way to go!

@@Paiste18 No. the Dark Horse does not have more power. The M8 has more power than the TS111. This has been shown several times with Dynographs. The TS111 is 74HP, 100TQ Rear Wheel The M8 107 is 81hP, 98.5TQ Rear Wheel The M8 114 is 86HP. 107TQ Rear Wheel. Also the Dark Horse Springfield does not have LED Lamps all around. The headlamp is Halogen. You pricing up a Road King Standard which is 2000$ less than the Springfield, comes with a windshield, dual crash bars standard, and passing lamps. So no, you're not getting more out of the box from indian. You get a few nicknack features, but it seems you aren't even aware of what you actually get standard on that bike. You got a lucky deal at the dealership. That is all that happened here. You got Lucky. Means they had a model there that they sprused up to get someone to buy it. You were in the right place at the right time. This could happen at a Harley dealer too. You cannot judge a lucky sale vs MSPR and market value products. We're talking actual MSRP here, not sales. You got lucky. That is all. This is why people need to do their research before buying.

@@Paiste18 Still doesn't negate the fact that you got lucky. RKS at that price is also a great deal. You cant debate at price points when you got lucky. That sorta stuff doesnt apply to everyone. When talking about price and value, you have to use nominal values, not anecdotes. M8 114 is more powerful than the TS116 btw. TS platform still only has 2 valves per cylinder. M8 has 4, and dual spark plugs. If you had to pay MSRP on both bikes, the RKS would be a better deal in terms of stock features.
