Better than an RT, RS or GS, the BMW R1250R

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The BMW R1250R is the hidden gem in BMW's R series lineup. It doesn't get the accolades it deserves and really is a Jack of all trades kind of bike.

Made the same mistake 2011 R1200r Classic in Black. After 6 years and a couple of S1000Xrs (Quick shifter is just crazy perfect) Probably due to the inline four. Now ordered 2024 Triple Black with just about everything as this will be a keeper. If you can only have one bike, this could be the best investment you could make.

Good move ordering the 2024. I think unless you’ve ridden an R you’ll never understand. Thanks for watching. I think the quick shifter in the S1000XR is the same as the one in the S1000RR and M1000R, if so agree, it’s absolutely perfect, best I’ve ever used

Since 1994 I have owned many R models; 850, 1200 , and the 1250. did love all of them. In 2021 I bought the GS triple black. I was amazed , despite increased size and weight, the GS was much more comfortable both in the seating position and suspension. The GS was deceptively easy to handle as well. I do think that the R series is very underrated and a great roadster; however, if you are going on long tours or lightweight off-road, the GS is the better choice. As I once heard, the R series is the gentleman’s hooligan bike 😂!

Like your channel, recently discovered and subbed. Sold my newly bought R1250R (2021) recently to get a Kawasaki Z900RS and after a few weeks very much regret it. Happy to say the person who bought my BMW is willing to sell it back to me and I'm not doubting that for one second. It's not especially a looker, but that R did everything SO well I really hated myself to selling it. The Z900RS is great but it's way 'less' of a bike than the R1250R.

Feel exactly the same way about the R1200R I sold, although I did eventually replace it with an R18 which is also a wonderful bike but for different reasons and so much style and character. I’ll probably buy another R at some point. The Z900RS is still a great bike though.

@BikerTorque yeah it, but after riding the R1250R for about 2 years and done 6500km on it, it's hard to go back to a 4cyl with less torque, less power and less tech. The RS is still amazing looking and pretty good for the money but the BMW was more a 'tool' for me and for that it's amazing.

What you refer to as castor is actually trail, whereas castor is another term for rake. Rake is the angle of the steering head compared to vertical, and trail is the horizontal distance from where the front wheel touches the ground to where the steering axis would intersect - draw an invisible line extending from the suspension through the axle onto the ground. Greater trail typically results in more stability at high speeds, while a smaller trail can make the bike more agile for quick turns and maneuvers. The R was designed for lower-speeds and shorter distances, thus no fairing or windscreen, and higher maneuverability vs the RS.

I am torn between this and the new Moto Guzzi V100. With castor, think shopping trolleys how the wheel can spin and be either in a more forward centre axis (RS) or with the centre access in line with the forks or rake (R). The slight increase in wheelbase promotes stability but negates turn in. I found this on test riding both bikes recently. With the ugly nav mount, you can at least get the phone cradle that adapts this to be a phone dock that can then power turn by turn nav on the tft. Again, awesome review, great to see such an awesome Australian channel.

I had the R1250RS for the last 2 years, did a few Euro trips on it. The Metz tyres from factory were terrible, once scrubbed out, fitted the Mitch Road 6, these did transform the bike, but still a little wooden, I also swapped the Beemer panniers for the Hepco & Becker, Xceed. Easy fit & top loading. I always felt I had to slightly wrestle the bike (RS) into bends etc, nothing wrong, just not as flickable as I was used to. I got an R1250R loan bike while the RS was in for a service. It handled so much better. So much so, when it was time to replace the RS, I got the R1250R. So much better & more fun. With the screen, not much difference in weather protection either, which sounds crazy I know, but its pretty good. Just need to scrub the tyres out now for the Mitch Road 6. The reason for the fun handling I believe, is the front axle. On the RS, it's kicked out about an 1", in front of the bottom of the forks for stability. On the R, the axle is directly below the forks, giving direct steering without that weight.... Oh. And the Xceed panniers went straight on too..... Tons of space for our up coming Spanish trip... Great review, cheers...

It did come with the clear beemer screen already fitted, not massive, but spoiled the lines a bit, just fitted a black Puig screen, though to call it a screen is a bit of a stretch, it just comes upto the top of the SatNav, as I moved the SatNav up above the screen for easier use... Still to actually test this one in rain, but it's more of a Bikini screen as on the Speed Triples, so probably not as good. But if touring in winter, I'll chuck the beemer screen back on....

I go the 2023 R1250R sport model (the blue one) and love it.. chose it over the superduke, both streetfighters, Speed Triple RS, h2sx and the tuono. A way better street bike than the rest due to the torque everywhere (felt the same as the superduke until around 7-8000 rpm), and it changes direction as easily as the others too (the others would be better suited to the track however). People think these are heavy but after pulling the centre stand off (it limited lean angle to 48 degrees, now I can get to 51), removing the panier mounts, the horrbile top box mount and ghastly nav mount... I dropped 8kg off the bike. So now it sits and around 230kg (full of fuel).. (noting that most bikes list their weights as dry).

The R1150R oilhead was a significant step forward from the old classic beemers but doesn't hide it's weight well - but that along with Tele lever front, stability, super comfort and relaxed torque engine make it a better long distance tourer. Later twin cam R1200R much lighter, significant power hike more spirited but seem to be overpriced hence I went for an R1200R giving me my first ABS, Traction/Modes and Electronic Suspension (62yr & only 5'8" so that'll help keep me biking more) Lets see if i like it as much after next tour Spain ferry to N.Italy, Slovenia, Croatia.

Nav holder with other Navigation Systems like Garmin XT so i am fine with this. However, recently I got a R18 for a week as my bike got it‘s service and now I debatting with myself if I should exchange the R1250 for the R18c or the new Roctane. I only can have one bike so both are no option. The R18 was so much fun but I am not sure if this would be a good exchange as luggage and comfort could be an issue on longer distances.

I have a R1250R. Had it for 3 years now. from brand new. Took ages to choose a new bike. Good points: 1. Similar public road performance to a ZX10 (acceleration times). 2. Handles superbly, guises its weight very well. Loves twisty fast flowing roads. Never feel intimidated. 3. Low centre of gravity. Would have dropped other bikes at junctions by now. 3. Very good fuel consumption, 60 to 65 mpg. 4. Outstanding low down grunt. No need to drop gear at road speed. 5. It is a naked, but the shape actually keeps the wind and rain of your body very well (better than my Suzuki GSXR750 I had of late). It is a naked, if one likes naked bikes. 6. Cheap to service. 7. Cheap to insure. Not so good/bad points: 1. Bugger to start in cold weather with a cold engine. In fact so bad, I am stressed, 'Will it start?' Okay in summer. 2. The quick shifter locks on down shift (don't use it), but actually is fine and smooth on acceleration (that is when one really needs it). 3. Don't buy if you like working an engine, such as a straight 4. It pulls rather than builds the revs. 4. The engine sound is mediocre, not bad on acceleration.

I must agree 👍 R its most fun and has best acceleration. Personally i choose RS since it had more "trail" and its more stabile at high speed. (Rake forks angle its the same, but on the bottom of firk legs the pivot/axe mountingpoint uts different - pushed forward. (I changed to tubular bars to make it more easierto turn) love windprotection and stability on the highway. RT an GS have telelever and maks me feel disconnected from the data/feelings where front wheel its. But must say wheelbase and gearing feelt beter on RT than GS in geberal i think its faster and more flickable than GS and RS. Shorter wheelbase allowed wheelies and fast changing of direction... unfortunately less stsbile at high speed. 1st place R, 2nd RT, 3rd RS and... GS 4th. It was thecpricecand high speed stability that lead me to buy RS.

It doesn't really make sense to postulate whether the Roadster is better than the RT or GS - it's horses for courses. But as you suggest, the Roadster is a fantastic all-rounder - it's the two wheel equivalent of a truly sporty SUV. I've had my 2015LC since new and covered over 120,000 fun-filled kilometres on all sorts of roads - commuting, daily errands, scratching and touring, on bitumen (good and bad) and gravel (I fitted a GS bash plate for good measure). Being a big twin with a lot of engine and gearbox inertia, the shift-assist is never going to be as slick as the four cylinder BMW's, but up/down changes above 3rd gear are as slick as you like on my 2015 if the revs are at a reasonable level. I found the 1250GS I rode in the European Alps last year seemed to bounce off the driveline dampener (fitted to 2016+ models) so not as smooth. The Nav Prep is part of the optional Touring Package - the importers tend to spec all their stock with this and other packages - all worthwhile if you can afford them, until you get to the Option 719 glitzy items (trying to gild the lily, in my view). In any case, it is very easy to remove and unplug the Nav Prep unit if you are not going to use it, and the Touring Package is still good value compared with buying the other items in the package separately. BMW do have a Connected Ride navigation capability, but I find a separate GPS unit works better for big trips. Around town, my RAM mounted Quadlock Charger Pad with iPhone are quicker and more convenient to use (despite some screen readability issues - the voice cues are good). BTW, castor is simply the distance between the tyre contact point and where the line of the steering stem meets the road surface. The difference between the R ad RS in this respect is that the RS forks have the axle offset.

That's a coincidence ........ I've had my R1200R, from new, since 2015 and, in the same blue as the one you had. Fantastic machines and, my one and only BMW so far. Mine still rides like new and has more than enough grunt which is why I've never been tempted by the 1250 shift cam. I regularly get fuel returns of 68 mpg (imperial gallons). I can't really explain 'castor' to you but the reason the R has quicker steering than the RS can be seen quite clearly. Look at the very bottom fork casting on both bikes, on the R, the front wheel axle is in line with the fork leg centre line. Now, look at the RS, the axle is shifted, several mm, forward of the fork leg centre line. I guess this effectively increases the rake angle, hence slower steering but increased high speed stability. 8 years ago, the slower steering on the RS put me off although I liked the look of the small fairing ........ so, it had to be the R ....... no regrets at all. I agree, you should have kept yours. Having said all that, they aren't very popular here in the UK, I've only ever seen just a few in 8 years. Another great review, all the best Phil

Your right about the nav holder, its ugly but also too low to be able to see easily. While were at it the BMW Nav6 is a bit crappy as well. Luckily this can be easily and cheapy resolved by changing to Wunderlich Nav holder which holds the nav above the speedo display and also buying a Garmin XT or XT2 instead of the Nav6. The whole set up is several hundred £'s less than the Nav6 and way better.. Night and Day difference. A brill bike for touring with great OEM luggage options, then I would say that as I happily have one.

Hi from Russia with love... to bikes! ) PLZ tell me, does it really make sense to overpay for the r1250, or is this shiftcam marketing essentially, and will the r1200 really give the owner the same thing? I have heard more than once that the r1250 is not worth +50% of the cost of the r1200 on the secondary market (in Russia they ask for ~10k$ for the r1200 and almost 14-15K$ for the R1250). Unfortunately, we don’t have any factory guarantees - BMW has left the Russian market...

@@BikerTorque I've recently picked up a 2016 R1200R (that lovely blue) and love it , but sporty it isn't. It feels like I'm going to highside in a fast turn. I've yet to use the Dynamic mode but I can't imagine it will make much of a difference. Maybe I need new tires. Thanks for your review.

@@BikerTorque Thank you for your reply. I have had a number of bikes over the years, and it is by far the best. Superb power delivery and it handles lightly and positively. The low centre of gravity makes it flickable. I once had a GSR750R and one revved the engine for the power, but the BM just pulls from low revs and one does not need to take it above 4000 rpm for road legal speeds. More like a diesel in that respect. I like naked bikes, and it has less wind noise than the Suzuki (wind over the half fairing). However, if one wears ear plugs one hardly notices it. I like a machine between my legs where I sit on it, rather than in it. Gripes? I miss clocks, but that is me, the TFT is not for me. However, more seriously it can be a bugger to start in cold weather. I nearly had to call out BM rescue when it would not start at a garage after filling up, in very cold weather. I had a BM in the past, and that was the same. The quick shift is fine on acceleration, but can lock on downshift, but that does not bother me, used to clutch work. It is an asset when accelerating. The engine braking is very intense and takes some getting used to, but means less use of the brakes. I ride in dynamic all the time, even in the wet. Don't notice much difference except the throttle does not need to be opened so much, kinder on the wrist. Sound wise, sounds like a Lancaster bomber at speed, but nice on acceleration, but not that competitive to other bikes I suppose, but I did not buy it for the sound.

4 kg. is not something your going to feel. Between the RS and R it comes down to looks, and wind protection. If you don't mind the wind, and prefer the looks of the R than that is the bike for you. Other than that there is no difference.
