Better Cameras vs. Cheap Zmodo DVR - Night Test *

This is a follow up to the original video where I compared low cost CCTV cameras. A lot of people wanted to see how they performed at night so here it is.

Thank you for your in depth and honest trials of these cameras. You saved me much $ as I will be opening an auto repair shop. We have been a mobile repair business and now able to have "brick and mortar" along with mobile. Security cameras are a necessity these days, especially in a auto business. Thanks again and keep up the good work!!!!!!

This is an outstanding test you did on cheaper security camera systems. Thank you for the education.

The plates might be readable with IR that have a way to decrease the intensity of light.

Erik, thank you for the great reviews. I know in your daylight comparison videos, the edge went to the VideoSecu camera. However, in the night shots, it looks like the Evertech performed much better. To my eye, it looked like the night shots of the VideoSecu camera were not lighted as well. How did the two compare when you used the supplemental IR illuminators you used in your video on that subject?

Excellent job and thank you. Are all the camera connectors the same? I have a Zmodo but want to upgrade and you've provided real good info. I'm more concerned about the night vision within a 60-80 ft range and don't mind spending a few extra $$ on better cameras. Will my Zmodo 8 channel DVR handle the better cameras?

what sort of CCTV system do you have? I am looking for an 8ch one and having hard time choosing as people have lots of negative feedbacks on them (ELEC, Zmodo, SANNCE). Its vital for me to able to set the remote access (via cellphone) easily). any suggestion?

What you should do is disable/remove the camera's internal IR LEDs and mount a seperate IR illuminator away from the camera off to the side. Try to put the illuminator at least 6 feet away from the camera. If you have to use the internal IR, then use a motion sensor floodlight with either incandescent lights or LED lights (NOT CFLs) to light up the area. Conventional lights work best to read license plates at night.

I'll give this a try, I have a bunch of IR illuminators. I personally don't need to see license plates but the indirect method does make sense.

Erik, Im looking at buying a system are the cameras you are using 700TVL

Some of the cameras were 700Tvl but the DVR is not a 960h recorder. That is where the higher TVL would really shine. I will be testing one of those soon.

Ummm, my Zmodo 720 p SPOE cameras are quite sharp, although night vision does not let you read license plates; but I hear the 1080 cameras are much better. I find the NVR operating system a bit buggy. Hope they update the firmware soon.

Yes these cameras are the original D1 cameras that shipped with this particular DVR. D1 is 704 x 480 while your 720p 1280 x 720 which is in a totally different league. I would expect your newer cameras to have better color representation as well. To tell you the truth even with some of the high end server based security DVR software I still question their software design choices.

Sony supposedly makes the best ccd video chip. I guess it's all a crap shoot. I still wanna know how to buy IR lights that aren't bright red.

I think it has to do with their wavelength (700nm-1mm). If iI remember correctly, 840nm one's will glow red but give better distance. Where as 940nm emit no visible light, but give short distances. But check the feedback of sellers if buying on ebay. A lot of them out of China are just sending white light LED's....

So you are comparing 420TVL Zmodo and VS with small leds to 700TVL Evertech with large leds. Does this have any sense whatsoever?

  • @ohmusicsweetmusic

So none of them can read a license plate. Now, cover your face in some way and let's compare which ones are the best. May as well put up dummy cameras, thank you!

If I wore a ski mask while shooting this video my neighbors may have called the police. lol Some of the high resolution IP cameras can identify license plates in certain situations but if they are sensitive to IR light and you are blasting it from the camera itself this washout often occurs. If you are a business or have a descent budget you can get License Plate Recognition (LPR) cameras. In my experience they work great but they are costly.
