Ойын-сауық

Will Kim Wexler and Jimmy McGill meet again in the Better Call Saul Series Finale? (Mutually Assured Destruction - MAD theory)
This video contains SPOILERS from Better Call Saul.
A quick examination of Kim' Wexler's 2 lies, where she lied about not knowing Lalo Salamanca and Saul Goodman were alive, and a finale theory based on the principle of mutually assured destruction, and the bigger underlying themes of Redemption and Betrayal, and how this might figure into the final resolution for Kim Wexler and Jimmy McGill.

"Saul Goodman is like a cockroach--- Even after the apocalypse hits, he's going to find a way to survive." -Vince Gilligan, prior to the launch of Better Call Saul in 2015. No way he dies, and not likely he does the time for his (or anyone else's) crime. Just can't see Gilligan and Gould ending Jimmy's remarkable story with something as unsatisfying as death or arrest.

“The way I see it is somebody is going to prison. It’s just a matter of who.” Saul Goodman to Walter White and Jesse Pinkman, S2E8 “For a price, Jimmy will go to prison for you.” Saul Goodman to Walter White and Jesse Pinkman again in the very same episode. It’s amazing that the ultimate weapon that took down Jimmy was the very first thing we know about him, his commercial. So I think his endgame is also hinted in the same episode as well.

I think Kim lying to Howard's wife about not knowing that Jimmy is alive is not manipulative at all, but actually done out of her love for Jimmy. Just as her not telling Jimmy she knew Lalo was alive, she explained the reason for that was that she knew he would blame himself and panic by trying to protect her and take her away. She also never imagined they would ever come face to face with Lalo again as she thought they were being protected by Mike, which is why she yelled at him 'you were supposed to be watching us, where were you' when she went to Gus's house. The most powerful moment of their phone call was the end with her telling Jimmy 'I'm glad you're alive' because it reiterated her love and fear for his well being when also asking Francesca if he was still alive (and it's heavily implied that her wanting to know he was alive was actually the only reason she called Francesca). Her not telling Howard's wife he's still alive proves she is not going to sell him out, as she is leaving the decision to turn himself in entirely up to Jimmy. She got called out on her hypocrisy by Jimmy and realized he was completely right, which is why she stepped up and took accountability on her end. Kim did a horrible thing by what she did to Howard but her actions in the last episode prove that she is not a horrible person. (For what it's worth I also think Jimmy still loves Kim and is in no way going to sell her out either).

Very good stuff. You make fair points all around. I still have a hard time seeing how her lying about whether she knows someone is alive - well, that's exactly what got her into this mess, so I have a difficult time believing doing the same thing represents her way out.

I was way more pessimistic, thinking that Saul would never change, and ultimately turn on Kim in the end like a coward. I’m glad I was wrong. Jimmy redeemed himself and earned his name back. Saul’s gone. But he still has to face the consequences of his actions. The bus scene is great. Nice to know he’ll have a half decent life in there. But tying it back in the end with Kim was perfect. He got what he really wanted, her respect/admiration back. The last shot is a gut punch. Not sure if I like it better than the Breaking Bad ending, but hats off to Vince Gilligan & Peter Gould. Instead of releasing the film El Camino, Gilligan/Gould should have launched an extended TV series (also called El Camino) showing Jesse's plight to escape from the Nazi's (in flashbacks), subsequent run from the law, to his struggle to raise the necessary funds (with the help of Badger & Skinny Pete) to escape from Albuquerque, would have made the a great third chapter in this series.

My Theory -Jeff stays in jail and attempts to rat on Saul to save himself, but ends up digging his grave even deeper and is now in serious trouble after admitting to his crime spree with Gene -Marion has a heart attack and dies because of Jeff's situation -Saul is on the run for awhile and attempts to reach out to Ed for another relocation, Ed informs him that the part he is looking for has been discontinued and wishes him good luck -Flashback to Saul and Walt in the bunker waiting to be relocated, have conversation about how Saul thinks Walt should turn himself in to save Skyler (ik this actually happened in BB, so there has to be something new about it, maybe they reminisce about the journey that led them both to where they are) -Police do a search of all known Fring associated locations and find the bodies under the lab, charges are pressed against Kim, she pleades guilty -Saul is constantly checking the news and happenings within ABQ sees that she actually turned herself in and threw away her life like he said she should do in their last call (there is a connection between the last phone calls for Walt/Skyler and Saul/Kim being pretty rough and not a good way to say goodbye), Saul reached out to the ABQ DA, now Ericsen, and makes a deal that he will turn himself in and cooperate if they drop charges against Kim -Fast forward Saul is in prison and the color is back, we see he is working his magic in prison and is a walking legend to the prisoners, might see some old faces from BB or BCS, he actually seems happy and is told he has a visitor, it is Kim, they make their peace and say goodbye (kind of poetic that Jimmy's story started with him being saved from prison by Chuck, and his story ends with him in prison, proving that he could never change and nobody could save him, but he accepts who he is)

Kim never lied to Cheryl by saying “assuming he’s still alive”. She has no duty to tell Cheryl that she was contacted by Jimmy or help the DA track him down. Let them do their own leg work. If she was subpoenaed and under oath and asked directly if she knew whether Jimmy was still alive, that might be a different story. I suppose maybe if we subscribe to the catholic ‘sins of omission’ dogma but that’s even a stretch for me. This is simply about her coming clean with regard to her part in setting up Howard.

From Kim's perspective and from this moment on I always felt like there could be a Kim vs Jimmy showdown. And when Kim betrayed Jimmy's trust with her lie by omission, and her leaving Jimmy for something SHE did, I felt like there was a potential Jimmy vs Kim showdown from Jimmy's perspective. It's totally possible that they both still feel the need to "win" over the other with how their relationship ended, especially for Jimmy. The winner takes it all.

From his perspective, he's going down either way. So if he can get Kim off the hook, I think he would do that. And from Kim's perspective.. what is the difference if she tells the DA what she and Jimmy did? He's already on the hook for much worse. She just wanted to clear her conscience. It's not really a betrayal.. they are already after him. And the fact she lied about him contacting her seems to be in line with that.

So, she chooses to assume her crimes, and "face the music". In the same time, Jimmy is doubling down on his crimes. He's hiding from the police, he doesn't face justice and keeps going with his schemes and scams. I think Kim will survive, and Jimmy won't. Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are moral tv-shows, even though a lot of innocent people are getting killed along the way. Ultimately we have seen the ways out of the game for Walter (Death) Jesse (Escape) but not yet Saul, so I believe he will go to prison (especially since escape is no longer a way out, depending if they retire the vacuum disappearer with the death of Forrester back in 2019)

No video on BCS has been more mind-bending than this one. I’ve learned not to make prediction about BCS, but here are some conjectures-inspired heavily by this video’s suggestion that Kim may be playing everyone in one last scam. POSSIBILITIES: (1) The affidavit portrays her as a minor, unwilling accomplice. (2) She answers Cheryl’s question with, “Because someone needs to stop Jimmy.” (3) The crying jag on the bus was a fake-which the director cut short. Perhaps she feigns hyperventilation and medics are called to make her more sympathetic. (4) Jimmy can’t refute any of this because Kim has “done the right thing” for six years, while Jimmy has been a monster. (5) There are material witnesses-the film crew, the fake PI, in some ways Cliff Mains, to whom Howard explained everything. (6) The security guards will quickly realize they were had by Gene once the APB hits the news (7) Kathy will suspect the cause of her 60 missing high-end items; (8) Buddy and Gene are small potatoes and could get a plea deal. (9) One of Fring’s henchmen could be in jail, read about Skyler’s plea deal, and get a lighter sentence for revealing the whereabouts of Howard and Lalo; (10) Kim could get a suspended sentence and head off to a quiet life on some island with Ice Station Zebra money-in the mode of the endings of “Silence of the Lambs” and “House of Games.” Her six quiet years have been her lying in wait for the right moment. (11) On this last point, in the Gilliverse, actions have consequences, but in the real world, Judeo-Christian theology also has the theodicy problem-sometimes good things happen to bad people.

So, every one of my conjectures was mistaken. Because in writing them, I forgot what I have been telling people all along -- BCS was not a procedural with a plot, it was literature, with a story line. And this ending was so much more powerful than any of the clever twists could ever have been. It was genius--and it took me about an hour after the show for that thought to settle in. ... Thanks for all of your great videos.

I actually don't see any more room for betrayal between the two. Most of the bad stuff that Jimmy did was after the two got separated, it would be impossible to pin that on Kim. Before that the most crime you can pin Jimmy for is being a cartel lawyer. A lot of people seem to forget that it was Lalo that killed Howard, not Jimmy and Kim. The two played a con on Howard but they didn't plot Howard's murder. Even if the two were to go to trial it would be hard to prosecute either of them for the death of Howard. They can also say that they didn't tell the truth about Howard's death due to fear of the cartel. The majority of the crime of Saul Goodman involves rico charges being the Hagen to Heisenberg's Vito Corleone. I don't think what he did to Howard matters that much in comparison. When Cheryl said that she can sue Kim in a civil suit for everything she got, I wonder if that's possible. What laws did Kim break exactly? Cheryl can sue them for defamation but beyond that I don't think theres anything there. Maybe whatever is left of HHM can sue Kim and Jimmy for sabotaging the Sandpiper settlement since they caused HHM to receive less money.

They have nothing on Kim other than her affidavit, and she said so herself they likely won’t prosecute. And she has no bearing on what they really want Saul for. She could be a character witness I suppose tho, but I don’t think so.

@@jakepayne2985 it's a defamation case at most, with some petty theft and maybe poisoning but without a toxicology report thats unlikely. Seeing as Howard died the same day, it's hard to even make a case for awarding any damages which is usually the outcome of a defamation case. It's like Kim says the DA may not even prosecute, and she's allowed to travel back to Florida without any kind of threat of court. Cheryl can try and take her to civil court, but Kim has nothing Cheryl can even take if she wins that case (she didn't take the sandpiper money, probably rents that mid range house, and gets an average income) and Jimmy has such a long rap sheet against him that a defamation case is a footnote on what they'd want to get him on trial for if they caught him. We literally see it on Kim's face when Cheryl's like I could take you to civil court and you lose everything (I'm paraphrasing) and Kim's face is just saying "lose fucking what?"

Don't think it's too complicated...Kim has confessed all, she's not going to lie for herself anymore, and she's not going to hide Jimmy's role in it either. But she's not going to directly turn him in because she doesn't know where he is, so if she tells them they've talked recently, they'll subpoena for phone records and figure out where he called from and begin a search for him. Kim's guilt for dragging him into the Howard scheme is still there, so she's giving Jimmy that much of a "head start" but if he does get caught, she's not going to shield him anymore.

Instead, he repeatedly kicked the table the lantern was on until it finally fell on the floor. Do you think he was trying to sort of distance himself from the idea that he was taking his own life? She bottled up what happened to Howard for six years, made a written confession (instead of verbally saying what she did), and then had a breakdown on the bus and I know that's a lot to go through but acting like her having to live a mundane life like all of us is punishment isn't the same as her lecturing people to "put on their big boy pants" and go to prison.

The one thing I didn't like about 'Waterworks' was that they showed the Kim/Jesse scene as Kim's last scene of that episode. The scene with her breaking down crying on the bus should have been her last scene, and not only should it have been her last scene in the episode, it should have been her final scene in the series because it would have been the perfect, most cathartic ending for her. Just as Gus was given the perfect final scene for his character of him leaving the bar and showing us that he knew he could never have a normal happy life, Kim finally letting out all of the pain she tried to bury away showed us that she learned what she had to do in order to move forward with her life.

'Breaking Bad's finale is hailed as one of the greatest final episodes in television history largely because it's technically a happy ending. Even though Walt died he accomplished his goal of making sure his family would be provided for, Jesse got away, and Lydia, Jack, and his entire gang got killed. I think Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould know the importance of not ending things on a depressing note and in my opinion, Gene successfully escaping would be the most depressing outcome imaginable, even more so than death, as he would be stuck in this purgatory-like existence of always having to look over his shoulder and constantly having to throw himself into crime in order to mask his pain. He also is forced to live well below his means in order to not attract attention to himself which further adds to his misery. Him being killed would actually be liberating, just as it was for Walt. The other possibility of a happy ending (happy being a relative term of course) would be for him to turn himself in, showing he's finally willing to try to deal with his problems. I just have a gut feeling the writers will make sure Jimmy will be looked upon in a good light when all is said and done.

  • @fabrizioarvat1141

    @fabrizioarvat1141

Putting jimmy in a good light is easy enough to get an acceptable ending, because this series overshadowed Breaking Bad's Saul Goodman enough. Gould has developed his own version of Saul that does not completely coincide with the one depicted in the original series and in some ways betrays him. The series has failed to fully develop the devolving path that leads Jimmy to become Saul. It is no coincidence that this metamorphosis occurs with a time jump that hides this narrative failure. Breaking Bad's Saul Goodman is much harder to save than BCS's Jimmy, in fact everyone continues to be surprised by Gene Takovic's moral regress, because they don't remember too well what character Saul was in the original series.

I wouldn't exactly call it a happy ending. Jesse, being a much better person than him, was rewarded with a better ending (I guess we can say that there is some justice in the BrBa universe after all). I think the best ending for Jimmy would be for him to go to jail and actually deal with his pain for once, so he can learn from it and change. I don't think he deserves to die as much as Walter did.

She couldn't go and tell all then because Mike and Gus were around. But then Saul challenges her on the phone and that was the boost she needed to come clean. Coming clean was for her own soul. She was giving Jimmy some room to have his own redemption if he ever chose to. Who knows how it all will end. I like the thought of Kim starting a new life using her skills to help people pro bono and Slipping Jimmy helping people in prison while he does some time and finds his heart again. That's probably too optimistic.

His last “con” will be getting her out of trouble by turning himself in.

I’ve now been thinking a lot about the scene in Breaking Bad when one guy from Lidia’s list tried to cut a deal, where he would squeal in exchange for walking, since his money was cut off. Hank offered him a piss poor deal, since they had 11 people total who knew what he did. Now I’m wondering if Saul will be able to keep out of prison, in exchange for being the only person alive knowing what he knows, and also has Bill Oakley represent him.

Saul's more likely to cut a deal with the Feds and blame it all on Oakley than hire him for his defense.

Gene was never more than a shell, whatever was left of him died or was killed by Saul in that phone booth after Kim hung up. Saul was on his way to strangling an old lady when her “I trusted you” line finally woke up Jimmy, then he fled. _Saul Gone_ will be about Jimmy overcoming Saul, then doing the right thing turning himself in, so Kim can move on. Just like Walt freeing Jesse, Jimmy & Kim can share one last brief moment, then go their separate ways for good.

Jimmy would NEVER EVER EVER rat Kim out. Kim is the love of his life & he would DO ANYTHING in the world for her.

What I would like to see is Jimmy and Kim floating in the pool somewhere in South America getting ready to run another scam on somebody at the bar however I keep thinking about the way Breaking Bad ended with Walt lying on the floor and the Badfinger song “baby blue“ playing with the line that summed up the entire arc of the scales of justice tipping towards “guess I got what I deserved”
