Thank Your Lucky Stars (1943) #WarnerArchive #WarnerBros #ThankYourLuckyStars
When would-be producers Dr. Schlenna (S.Z. Enter a wannabe star who looks like a twin of Eddie Cantor (also Eddie Cantor), a band of Hollywood Indians and dozens of stars out to and entertain the GIs and fun is had by everyone, including the celebrities on stage.

If you had to pick one performer, performing one particular song at one moment in history, this is the perfect example. A small little sample of why for a brief moment in our past we all came together and literally worked together and saved the world. Quite a difference when you look at the events of today.

Bette actually hurt her leg badly during this scene. The young guy who danced with her was a huge fan and was terrified to swing his idol in the air plus Bette hated the swinging part and told him to just forget that she’s Bette Davis and get it over with. She ended up finishing the scene in one take and refused to do it again♥️😁✨

She out-Dietrichs Dietrich in this great spokes-song--so sophisticated and funny. She couldn't carry a tune in a bucket but she could play comedy marvelously. She should have done more. It was she who was primarily responsible for the creation and success of that nightclub exclusive to the armed forces, The Hollywood Canteen. She did more for the war effort than ten John Waynes...

All the studios mustered their contract talent to 'volunteer' for patriotic wartime revues. Bette was the prime mover behind WB's project, which remains one of the most amusing, partly bc it majored on unlikely singers: Errol Flynn, John Garfield and Hattie McDaniel as well as Bette herself. Jack Warner wanted to keep the profits, but she shamed him into donating them to the Hollywood Canteen.

Yes, you are so right! The lyrics are so great in this song. The song was a collaboration with composer Arthur Schwartz and composer/lyricist Frank Loesser, who went on to write hit musicals such as “Guys and Dolls,” “How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying,” two classic musicals with great film adaptations. Thinking about how clever and funny the lyrics in many of Loesser’s songs are, I would bet the lyrics to this song are his. Arthur Schwartz wrote many classic popular songs, such as “By Myself,” “Dancing in the Dark” (from “The Band Wagon,”1931) and “That’s Entertainment (from “The Bandwagon,” 1953).

I have not seen this for years, remembering it for Bette dodging high notes and being thrown around. Now it comes over as less farcical, more wistful, with that gesture of renunciation at the end that anticipates Margo Channing. Bette was always good at frustration. Like many an amateur, she phrases the lyrics' plays on words too deliberately: reciting rather than throwing them off, as a past mistress of acting while singing such as Ginger Rogers would have done. Bette should have used speak-singing like Rex Harrison. But she gets the message over. There were a lot of sex-starved ladies on the wartime home front, and this is as much a song for the times as 'Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree' was for the guys whose poster she was contemplating.

She's lousy as a singer and the so-called dancing is all passive, but B. D. is to be commended for adding such vulnerability as an artist to the war effort - the last great war involving the US. There are far better recordings of the song, the best being the deliberate snippet of Kitty Carlisle Hart in Woody Allen's "Radio Days" (even the Maxwell House coffee sign is truncated if you look at the stills shot during production). They're either too fresh or too stale There is no available male I will confess to one romance I'm sure you will allow He tried to serenade me, but his voice is changing now. They're either too bald or too bold I'm down to the wheelchair and bassinet My heart just refuses to get upset I simply can't compel it to, with no Marine to tell it to I'm either their first breath of spring or else, I'm their last little fling! I either get a fossil or an adolescent pup I either have to hold him off or have to hold him up The battle is on, but the fortress will hold They're either too young or too old (Orchestral Break) I'll never, never fail ya while you are in Australia Or out in the Aleutians Or off among the Rooshians And flying over Egypt Your heart will never be gypped And when you get to India I'll still be what she's been to ya I've looked the field over And lo and behold! They're either too young or too old"
