That was all going well til we got to the part about making sure the HOB isn't creating too much flow. How do I know how much is too much? We have a 10G that's currently empty after our last molly died recently. I think the filter is a Penguin 100.

Nobody tells you these things, especially if they wanna sell fish to kids. And the thing is, where I live, there's only one pet shop, I can't even boycott them.

I've got 3 bettas. 2 of them are friendly, chill, and laid back. The other one...yeah, he does not play well with others. He will not even tolerate a ramshorn snail in his tank. It's ALL his. When I put a new leaf in his tank or an alder cone, he will flare at them and shove them around for a few days. I've had all 3 for about 2 years. Gorgeous fish, but so funny with their very different personalities. Just like all living creatures each one is unique. 👍💕👍

I've had 3 bettas. My first one was very agressive, flared at everything. Even if my finger got too close to the tank lol. The 2nd was more chill, didn't flare at much other than his reflection. The 3rd was literally not a betta. I've had him over a year and he hasn't even flared up once. He was also mistaken as a female when I bought him. He was in the tank labeled "A grade female fighters" so he only cost me £5 😂

I may be in my late twenties, but I still giggle every time I watch fish eat. That little blerp their mouths do is just so cute. Thanks for the great video! I've been thinking about getting a Betta for my kitty to watch. We live alone and I love her more than anything, but we've been driving each other nuts since I work remotely. And before anyone feels concerned, I got a goldfish for her years ago when she was still young and rambunctious, and she never jumped up or tried to eat it. I raised her to not even attempt to eat my plants. Honestly if a Betta did the flare thing at her, she'd probably just get offended and take a nap lol.

The fact people keep them is such tiny tanks so often is so upsetting... I saw on an online store that they were selling a glass ball about the size of a light bulb that was meant to hang up with a live betta inside! These are not decorations, they are live animals. They are pretty and can accent a room nicely, but they need a larger tank and much more care then throwing them in a tiny glass vase with plants like many offices do...

  • @heaven7360

I keep mine in 10 gal aquariums...one betta in its own 10 gal. The 5 gal tanks just got so messed up...and always so hard to maintain water parameters ... awful..and bettas need more space to "roam". Plants grow better for me, in 10 gal too. I tried tank mates and it was more of a pain in the neck than I wanted in my life. My bettas got so frightful when I put even just corys in there. They aren't always this way, but I've had a pair of betta Falx get awful hiding anxiety and are a real pain to kept fed now after the corys They used to be super aggressive and unafraid to come up to the surface and ate whatever I gave them from tweezers. Now it's awful...I have to work at getting them back from their anxiety hiding now I do have a few nerite snails in with one of my bettas, also a 10 gallon and it's working out great...good to keep down algae and my fish has plenty of space to swim. My other bettas are all alone in 10 gal tanks, which I'm able to keep up with tank issues and fish issues. The more I wanted to build upon my betta fish and their tanks the more of a headache it became. More power to ya if anyone can make it work...I've seen bettas on youtube that have tank mates..but personally it was more of a headach than worthwhile. Also my bettas love more space to investigate and stretch out...Those 2 or 3 gal tanks are TOO small for anything but really small fish and bettas are not small. All in all I know the temptation to try new things and expand when it comes to aquarium keeping...but I wasted a lot of money and energy moving too fast. My recommendation is to just learn from keeping maybe two tanks and when adding fish to do lots of research and have a Plan B if things don't work out.

Fully cycled with a sponge filter and heated (78 degrees Fahrenheit, ph 7) 2.5 gal and nice water conditioner, a little aquarium salt, and some water clarifier, and a great color enhancing pellet food. They’re my favorite fish and I’ve owned them most of my life (I’m 23 and I grew up with my dad being huge into the aquarium hobby, he even kept piranhas that he live fed. Thankful I was taught about water parameters, how to test my water, and mostly the nitrogen cycle and how to cycle a tank.)

Thank you. I think this is one of the most balanced, honest guides to betta care I've found. I've had some previous experience with a larger freshwater tank but not with bettas. I thought I'd gotten a proper tank kit when I purchased the Marineland Contour 3. (It's 3 gallons but when you add in the substrate it's 2.5 gallons of water.) But after reading and watching a lot of videos where people insist that bettas have to have at least a 5 gallon tank I began to have a lot of doubts. I added a sponge filter to completely replace the HOB that came with the kit and there's about 1.5" of gravel on the bottom. I added an adjustable heater with a digital readout and I have an inside the tank sensor thermometer to double check the digital readout, plus an outside the tank thermometer with an alarm that goes off if the temp goes outside the parameters that I set. (Just to be on the safe side.) I have 2 silk plants that take up the back and from 1/3-1/2 of the front of the tank that hide the filter and give the tank a very natural look. I also added some tannins via pure rooibos tea to give the water a nice leeching driftwood tint. And there's one small rock formation that I sanded to remove sharp edges and washed with boiling water nestled into one of the silk plants. It's a brand new tank and I treated it with SeaChem Prime and SafeStart Plus. The current ammonia readout is just under 0.05ppm. (I did the first partial/20% water change today and he (Sandy) tolerated it well.) I have the SeaChem ammonia and PH alerts inside the tank to constantly monitor those parameters. After reading and watching a lot of other videos I came to believe I'd made a huge mistake by buying a 3 gallon tank instead of a 5 or even a 10 gallon tank. I did buy a 5.5 gallon tank that I filled with water and a heater (but no filter, at least not yet) to serve as a ready supply of 79 degree water for water changes and/or a hospital tank if needed. (At that point I would probably add a sponge filter but no gravel.) I added the corresponding amount of SeaChem Prime but no SafeStart Plus (it would be pointless with no fish, since I'm not doing a fishless cycle). I was tempted to just shift everything over to the 5 gallon tank but after watching this video I came to believe that with proper care I can make it work with the 3 gallon tank. Sandy has lots of places to hide and seems to be coming out of his shell. (The first day and a half he just hung around the bottom and didn't seem to be interested in eating. Man...has THAT changed. LOL) I also have 2 suction cup betta hammocks, and I've seen him lying on some of the silk leaves at the top now that he's come out of his shell. He swims well, explores the tank, and he doesn't appear to be buffeted around the tank because the sponge filter is more gentle than the HOB filter. And he already has me trained as far as when he wants food. (NOTE: I feed him very sparingly. 4 little BioGold pellets once or twice a day max. And I do mix it up with some tiny Fluval Bug Bites pellets in place of the BioGold to give him some variety. And as a treat one or two freeze dried bloodworms. Somewhat O/T but I think the biggest hurdle to keeping bettas specifically has less to do with water chemistry and tank setups and more to do with how humans respond psychologically to solitary beings. "Oh...he looks so lonely in there. I'll just feed him more. That will make him happy". Uhm....no...it won't make him happy. It might make the hobbyist happy, but it's clearly detrimental to the fish and to the tank. Similarly with regard to: "Oh...he looks so lonely in there. I HAVE to get him a tank mate". That might work if you have the right betta and the right tank mate, but it could also blow up if your particular betta doesn't really WANT a tank mate, resulting in a more stressed, not a more content, betta. As with anything that involves dealing with another being, accurate assessments based upon accurate observations, uncolored by our preconceived notions, is key. And while I think that's more or less universal, and applies to scientific inquiry and counseling as well, I think this specifically applies to caring for bettas since almost all other fish in the hobby live in communities. Therefore caring for a betta is really not like caring for other fish, and requires the discipline to overcome our preconceived biases and focus on what's really best for the fish. Water chemistry-wise, yes, it's like caring for other fish; other than that, it's unique. And the problems are compounded by the stupid little "betta habitats" sold in all of the big box stores, compounded by the tiny little bowls in which they are displayed. (And without a doubt, if I conclude, based upon my observations, that Sandy needs a larger tank to thrive I will not hesitate to make the switch.)

We would scoop out a few cups & add new water occasionally. We picked them up at walmart or petsmart or something like that. Nemo & Dory were rugged little guys though and lasted 3-4 years! It's amazing what fish can endure. When I was a kid we would catch bluegill and keep them in 20 or 29 gallon tanks all summer with just a box filter, fill the water out of the hose and never really did water changes. We usually put them back when the winter approached because they were in an unheated garage.

Love you guys videos. So excited to of found you guys. The fish info and proper care makes my heart happy💜One thing I think is very important when it comes to bettas is not feeding peas at all. Just bc they're insectivores and can't properly digest anything in the pea. Any food with wheat as the main ingredient can easily cause bloat too. Look for a insect base food. And only feed them enough to where their bellies start to pooch out a bit. For constipation/bloat, a few good tips are feeding daphnia and flaring them up against a mirror off and on for 5 minutes. Also good exercise for them☺ adding catappa leaves, Indian almond leaves or things like alder cones and Lily pods will provide tannins within the water and also will help keep the fish's slime coat healthy. Sorry for rambling. You guys are amazing and i love what you are doing👌🙏🌈😎

HUGE HUGE thanks to you both for your educational videos. Over the past week, I have aquascaped a 2.5 gallon tank with real plants, good substrate and natural rocks (with fossils because that's how my palaeontologist daughter rolls), and cycled it. We are ready for 1 betta and 1 mystery snail tomorrow. pH is perfect. In choosing our new pet, I bypassed the (seriously cute) tiny dragon betta with fin rot, because while I am a sucker for a rescue, I recognise I don't have the skill to heal her. I can talk water chemistry to the aquarium guy, buy a sponge to decrease water flow and I knew what plants to buy, how fast they grow and how much light they need. All thanks to you. The aquarium guy told me I have fallen down the rabbit hole LOL.

My first betta lived for so long, it was crazy. Close to 8 years, in a small bowl as I was instructed to do by the person at the pet store, so many years ago. I could not believe how long he lived. Awesome fish. Since learning more over the years, I got a new one in October. Gorgeous white, like your betta shown at 6:40 in this video. Flash forward about a month, he was turning a metallic silver/blue. Flash forward to now, he's a darkish blue with silver/pewter metallic streaks/patches. Any idea why that is? He's a great fish, very cute and reactive to my voice. I will call to him in an excited voice and he will swim to the side I'm standing at and starts swimming in circles and looking up because he knows food is coming. He's in a 5g tank with a heater and seems really happy and well adjusted. I don't understand how a completely bright white fish turned silver and then blue with pewter. I bought him because I loved the colour and he was the only white one there lol. It's ok, I still love him, but I am very confused.

I have my bettas in a 33 long divided tank. Shelia from LifeWithPets has some great tank dividers. I also have one in a 5 gallon. I have kept bettas in community tanks before and it has worked out. Like you said, it depends on the betta.

The bettas in this video are incredible😍 also I’ve heard mixed things about keeping bettas with African dwarf frogs, what do you think? Right now my betta is in a 5.5 gallon but I want to upgrade soon and include more species!

Thank you! I haven't kept the combo together, although we have both in our fish room right now in different tanks. Dwarf frogs are very prone to getting picked on - they aren't very reactive when fish come into their space, so if a fish wants to bite them, the frogs don't seem to avoid them easily.

Annette mine had an African drawf frog and was fine with it for the longest of time then one day out of the blue he killed it. Just depends on your fishes personality.

Thanks for the video! Growing up, I always had a betta. I had a purple and pink male Betta named Derek who lived 10 YEARS!! He was the best. Thinking of getting another. Beautiful fish.

You know what I really loved the most on bettas? When you walk close to their tank they will stop swimming and those small eyes, you can actually see it moving and looking straight at you. I have ranchu gf, molly and guppy but their eyes doesn't really move like what bettas eyes can do.

That usually works best in a large tank with dozens of them living together. Usually in anything less than a 55 gallon it's probably better to keep just one.
