I have only once witnessed the Holy Spirit poured out in church. That event included a deliverance on my wife who had taken Ayahuasca many years before. The Pastor cast out a serpent from my wife. She had never told anyone at church that when she took Ayahuasca she 'hallucinated' that she had swallowed a snake. Since that day she had felt a dark stronghold in her stomach. That deliverance took that pain away. My wife is a very shy and reserved person so this was not for show. Before I witnessed this I too was a John MacArthur loving cessationist. I now know those gifts have not ceased.

I grew up in a faithful Christian home with Godly parents. Very traditional reformed church so not charasmatic at all. But in my teens even though I believed in God I was very confused spiritually, struggled with depression and drugs. I was invited to a small charasmatic church where a prophetic person was preaching (long story how that happened lol). At the service I saw manifestations of the Spirit like people getting slain in the Spirit and ect. Towards the end of the service the prophet called me out by my name. Layed hands on my and what I can only describe as power of God flowing through my body, went down and started to speak in tounges. I got up, felt like a bag of sand dropped of me, was quite overwhelming. I went home, got in my bed and started to pray in tounges all night. During that night I was completely transformed. That was in 2009 and I'm still radical for Jesus and in full time missions.

I do believe that some people are slain in the spirit. But when it becomes a mandated or widespread practice, like Mike described, it becomes really damaging. I was in an environment like that and I still have to forgive that group of people because I was made to feel like something was wrong with me.

My experience was completely different.. I'd never been fallen down in prayer. I was praying for a drug addict who was completely unchuched seeking Jesus, with my hand over his head he fell down onto the floor and I was annoyed because I hadn't finished praying for him. Others were watching..and praising God. I just leant down and continued praying for him. Another time I gave an altar call and began praying generally for those standing with the microphone and a few cried out and fell over.. the pastor told me after nothing like this had even happen like this before to anyone in that church. Fortunately those people are active genuine Christians now. Fruit I think is the test. I think when the gospel is preached in the power of God a lot of those things will occur if we have expectation. The problem occurs when the experience is separated from the preaching of the gospel.

i Experienced trembling before and shaking... i used to chase Spiritual Experiences and wanted one so so much and i would get hurt when people would get filled with The Spirit because it never happened to me. so one day i finally Surrendered and gave up the desire and told God that if He didnt want to touch me, im fine with that and Accept His Will, right after i said that, i had an encounter with God. This happened many many years ago. im not into the charasmatic movement and God just Exposed many false prophets as liars and false prophets and the majority are just prophesying using their imaginations and thinking that their imaginations must be from God!! Spiritual Experiences with God and Heavenly Consolations are Awesome and they strenghen us for the journey ahead, but one must not chase after these. What one must do is just Surrender to Life and Surrender to God and take up our cross daily. The Charismatic Movement is so foucused on The Gifts but we should really be focused on The Great Commission.

I also faked being 'slain in the spirit' when I was a new Christian, because it was the expected thing. I was encouraged to 'just relax into Jesus' arms', which is what I obligingly did. I knew that I was not overcome by the spirit. I have also experienced someone trying to get me to fall over by shouting ,Now GO!', and hitting me in the middle of my forehead. There was NO way I was going to be knocked over! and I stood my ground.

I believe it has a lot to do with the culture of the Church. One side is against the gifts of the spirit (not good) then another side is so focused on the gifts that they can begin to act out of order and be disruptive or even problematic (also not good). God is a God of order, and deciding when to use people in the gifts of the spirit is by order as well. Sucks to see that so many will see whatever they want to see in scripture rather than cross examine their theology with the whole of Scripture (I’ve been guilty of it).

Thanks for sharing. Pastor Mike’s story reminded me of a story my friend shared with me. She was taken to a Charismatic Church by a friend and at one point during service people began falling down, rolling around on the ground uncontrollably, and speaking in “tongues”. Her friend fell down as well doing the same thing, but she noticed at one point her friend stopped for a moment, opened one eye looking around to check if everyone was still doing it, and then closed the eye and began rolling around again. Stuff like this has made me weary of Charismatic Churches but I’m trying to be more charitable and open to learning about it despite the abuse that can happen.

I wouldn't call it passing out, for me it was like submitting to an incredible joyful presence, a river of love. I've been a Christian for 50 years, been to bible school, studied the scriptures, I like to think that I'm well founded in right doctrines. First time it happened to me was '74. I thought I was praying in English but people told me afterwards, it was a foreign language. When the Toronto blessing thing happened, I resisted because I wanted to be sure it was real. Then I allowed myself to succumb, I literally laughed for 2 days. It was a real relief and help. There were other experiences when I wept too, then I prayed in petition. So I believe in these blessings, as long as they don't get abused, that there is order, and a balance with preaching the gospel and bible study. We need the Word to feed on, nourish our faith, especially when dry times come. But yes, I've seen plenty of abuse of it, too much disorder, lack of purpose, chasing the experience instead of the Lord Himself. Experiences come and go, but good things come to those that wait on the Lord. Be a blessing and also share your faith whether it's in season for you or not.

It is real, there are fakers, but sometimes when God brings his presence on you it can take you to your knees or on the floor. I used to look at it very sceptical until it happened to me. I think people are very cautious....and rightly so, but we have to test the spirits. Is it leading them closer to Jesus Christ, or closer to the world. We will know by that what it is.

I need to share my testimony on this because my experience was totally different and every bit real. I was a heroin addict and in desperate need of deliverance (literally also delivered from a demon). I went to church with my parents before heading off to rehab to avoid jail time. A few people had been slain in the spirit. I looked at my mom and said I will let them pray with me but I won’t fall down like that & she said that’s fine! I walked up for prayer and he didn’t even touch me and I felt a force push me back but I fought it and stayed standing. 10 seconds later, the Holy Spirit hit me a second time and this time it was so strong I couldn’t fight it. It knocked me flat out and knocked my dad off his feet too who was behind me. I was filled with the joy of the Lord that night and I needed it for the journey that laid ahead of me! A few months later I was water baptized & when I came out of the water I was baptized in the Spirit and my lips began to tremble and my prayer language came out of me (I couldn’t control it or stop it)! I’m closer to Lord than ever now! Having grown up in church my whole life, I can say this is the true power that the Holy Spirit gave me to overcome as I needed it. I didn’t seek the experience, I sought the Lord in my desperation and He responded. Perhaps it’s the motives behind why people seek a thing that determines who experiences it. I actually said “I won’t do that” but I received what I needed. People need to just pursue Jesus with their whole heart and let God be God! I know those encounters were real because they bore fruit in my life. Some will never be open to receive because of doubt and unbelief and some will seek the “experience” like a high & might get slain by something but I doubt the Holy Spirit will respond to those people because His power isn’t for show; it’s for those who truly want to worship in Spirit and in Truth. God Bless, I just really felt led to share this because too many in the body are misleading people by denying the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. How can we walk in and be led by the Spirit without the Holy Spirit working in and through us?! The disciples themselves became who they were only after receiving the Holy Spirit. Their gospel work took off after that!

@@mobbin4christ332 you aren’t alone. It seems we have two major groups prevalent today. One who has seen the abuse of the power of God so they stay so far away from it that they do not allow the spirit to move at all and the other so bent on the experience that they have missed the whole point entirely! I believe the Lord wants us to get back to the place where we submit and yield our vessels to Him & He is given the space to move as He wills & not us. The place where we surrender on the altar as a living sacrifice & allow our flesh and our will to die for His glory! We are warned not to grieve or quench the spirit & likewise we see the example of the man that asked for the Holy Ghost with ill motives and was rebuked for it. It comes down to our heart posture and our motives. My heart is grieved today for those entering our churches who were like me; in true bondage! They need the power of God for deliverance yet it isn’t happening in a majority of our churches anymore! The gifts of the spirit are real and desperately needed. They haven’t stopped; there’s just a lack of weak, willing vessels willing to lay down their life, their will, their sin and pleasures to seek first the kingdom of God and allow Him to move through their vessels! God is refining His body. He is separating the real from the counterfeit. His Spirit is needed in this hour. What we need is a healthy balance. We can’t throw out the baby with the bath water. We need to teach and equip the saints properly so that they understand the purpose of the Holy Spirit. It’s not about making experiences for people just to enjoy! It should bring about change that yields fruit for the kingdom of God!

Even leaving one service feeling like a second class Christian because I don't speak in tongues. I've since learned that I have over gifts including my faith itself from the holy spirit that I no longer worried in Gods timing if it's his will I will speak in tongues. I have once been properly slain in the spirit I remember going to the front for a call for prayer for healing I didn't need healing but I found my self scared of praying for healing for others. As the pastor came down the line of people slapping them on the head and they all went down one by one I remember thinking Mate I ain't going down that easily the only way I'm going down is if the Holy Spirit puts me down. I could still see his hand 6 or so inches away from me and my legs where gone and I felt God's presence so strong his power was so real to me in that moment and then God totally changed my life leading me to forgive a man who abused me as a boy. When God healed me from the brink of death (stomach was the size of an Italian prune), I collapsed, and there was no way I was going anywhere until He was done doing what He was doing. When I did get up, I felt intoxicated. But He healed me completely--that day, I was able to eat a full meal (something I hadn't been able to do for quite some time).

However i was hit with Holy Spirit fire and intensity at age 10 and i speak in tongues, my personal prayer language which has always been with me and never changed. Its not made up. The shaking i have experienced as well when the presence of the Holy Spirit is upon you in His power its a vibration your can't control or make up. I have had family and friends look cross at me, but as Gods honest truth its His presences so intense it wasn't me. I can only speak for myself. I believe God shows His presence in different ways as He deems fit for each person as He knows what is needed. He created us all unique in His image and we should never judge how God chooses to work in us.

Love Mike and his charitable approach on "secondary" issues as you say. There should be room for differences in experience and interpretation on matters like gifts. My issue with Johnson's teaching isn't in regard to gifts, it's in regard to Christ. He, like Todd White, have taught and wrote that Jesus emptied himself of his divinity while here on earth, performing his miracles and living sinlessly as a man, not as God. I was given a copy of his book Hosting the Presence by a worship leader friend and found this on page 40 of the paperback: "He is entirely God, entirely man. But both His life and death were lived as man. What that means is that He set aside His divinity to live as a man. He was without sin and was completely dependent on the Holy Spirit. In doing this, He became a model that we could follow. If He did His great miracles as God, I'm still impressed. But I'm impressed as an observer. When I discover that He did them as man, then suddenly I am completely unsatisfied with life as I've known it. I am now compelled to follow this Jesus until the same things start happening in my life." Rather than interpret Philippians 2:7 to mean that Jesus added a human nature to his divine nature, they take it to mean that Jesus somehow removed some or all of his divine nature during his incarnation. This is a major, major problem and Christology is not a secondary issue in our faith. This particular teaching leads to all sorts of bad theology in other areas, but stems from a fundamental error about the very nature of Christ. And that's a BIG deal and extremely dangerous teaching we should be warning others about.

Years ago my boyfriend (at the time) & I went to a charismatic church. I was a believer & he was not. This lady who said she was a prophet came to visit the church. We went down to stage where there was a line of people in front of the stage. She went down the line & laid hands on people. She was a tiny little lady. When she laid hands on me, I wavered but I resisted falling down - my dad had always been against that kind of thing so I had mental blocks. But then I looked to my right- and my boyfriend was on the floor. She was tiny so there is no way she pushed him... like I said- he was not even a believer! I have always wondered about it. I definitely felt some kind of energy/power flowing through her hands- it made me have to bolster myself.

@@jakelewis7252 Yes, it actually is the Pastor's job to feed the flock. The word "pastor" derives from the Latin noun pastor which means "shepherd" and is derived from the verb pascere - "to lead to pasture, set to grazing, cause to eat". Of course that does not absolve the individual Christian from "studying to show thyself approved". As far as at what point a new Christian will eventually "feed themselves" that varies per individual. You would not fault a baby for not feeding itself and in the same way, you should not fault a "Babe in Christ" for not knowing deep doctrine.

    @matthewministry7278

    3 жыл бұрын

@@jakelewis7252 You are right, Pastor has become a Universal term, but that is not what God intended. God specifically intended the definition and office of a Pastor to have a specific meaning. In the verse where we get the term " Five fold" Paul mentions 5 different "offices and talents" they are each unique, specific, and not universal. Ephesians 4:10-13 KJV 11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: The problem nowadays is that many specific doctrines and commands in the Bible are considered universal when they are not. Even the word "Christian" Is now considered universal and has very little to do with faith and belief in the authority of God's word. We need to return to the old paths described in God's word. Jeremiah 6:16 King James Version 16 Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.

Tbh, I always wanted to speak in tongues naturally when it came and it did during spiritual warfare, I can attest that demons cannot stand it. I really do believe we make it such a big deal that people feel it has to come at a special moment, it just so happened for me, but I believe it could have came sooner, it is a gift God freely gives to all. Now, interpretation of tongues is another story, I think it is levels to a lot of things. The sly in the spirit when I did my altar call, I felt something and kept myself from falling, I believe it is real. I actually fought it from happening. It happened at a nondenominational church. 🤷‍♀️ Also, one time I was standing at the grocery store and the lady in front of me was talking about how her husband just had a heart attack and the stress and staying in the hospital. The Holy Spirit nudge me to pray for her right there, all of a sudden a power came out of me, I almost fell it was so powerful. The lady began to cry and thank me and other people around scattered. The Holy Spirit is powerful. I had a talk with the Holy Spirit and was like you know you almost took me out, not death, but to the ground. God does powerful demonstrations through us, I was amazed. I couldn't imagine if I didn't do what the Holy Spirit told me to do, which was to pray for a random stranger and have the Holy Spirit manifest.

This reminds me of when I was a teenager, because I went to 2 churches at the same time. I went to a Free Methodist church with my grandma on Sundays, and an Assembly of God church on Wednesdays with friends from school. My grandmas church preached that tongues were not real, and everyone who said they spoke in tongues were crazy. My friend's church said that if you didn't speak in tongues you weren't getting into heaven. Needless to say, I was confused, and felt like I had to pretend at both churches so that I would be accepted. I eventually faked tongues, and still have a hang up in my mind when it comes to them. I believe they can absolutely be real, however I don't think you have to speak in tongues to be saved, or a Varsity Christian. I go to a pretty charismatic church, and a lot of people speak in tongues there, but they don't force it on me, and they don't think less of me for not speaking in tongues. This is how it should be. Not everyone is going to have the same gifts, and we should delight in the gifts we have and not envy those who have different ones than we have.

Because the idea is that gifts are for edifying one another. All of them except tongues, which is for self edification. So we should be excited that so many in our body exhibit different gifts so we can accomplish more the kingdom. The churches that seem unhealthy to me are the ones that spend inordinate amounts of time trying to get everyone to have the same gift...tongues. That doesn't seem biblical to me at all.

Fast forward a little bit when suddenly we started hearing super weird loud sounds coming from the church building, like wailing & other unintelligible noises. Anyways, raised in a house hold that learnt about demons & all that, the three of us were scared beyond words and like any God fearing little girls we started crying & praying in the car. I don't even think we asked our parents for clarification when they got back but sometime later we found out that people were just being slayed in the spirit & blowing on rams horns - you know, super normal charismatic church stuff.

Mike did what some Charismatics refer to as "the duty drop" :)

    1. I had some well known preacher in my area at the altar try to push me down to the floor one time. I actually pushed my shoulder back against their hand. They were shocked and appalled and moved on to the next sucker. 2. On the flipside, I was at a friend's apartment, just praying and seeking the Lord together. He gently touched my shoulder to pray for me, and an unexpected bolt of electricity ⚡ slammed into me somehow and crashed me across the table! We were both blown away, and filled with holy awe and wonder. We began to worship fervently, and from our hearts. These are just my experiences; draw whatever conclusions you will from them. But before you do, let me throw a couple twists into the mix. The person in example 1. later apologized to me for their behavior. I forgave them. And the person in example 2. years later got offended because of a lie and totally betrayed and slandered me. LOL life is INTERESTING, especially spiritual life!

@@mariak3212 my takeaway is this: our quick judgements about people and events sometimes turn out to have depth and nuance and unexpected twists and turns. God knows people's true motives. We sometimes don't need to judge so quickly, but instead let a thing bear it's fruit over time. And forgiveness is key.
