Beth Rigby interviews… Alex Salmond

Scotland’s former first minister Alex Salmond has told Sky News he was contacted 10 days before a historic vote on equal marriage asking if SNP leadership candidate Humza Yousaf could “skip” it due to pressure from religious groups.
Mr Yousaf, one of three candidates in the running to replace Nicola Sturgeon, previously denied deliberately setting up a diary clash weeks in advance of the vote in 2014.
He said he supports gay marriage and voted for the legislation in the early stages.

I wouldn’t vote for Kate Forbes and I was a unionist voter last time round, Nicola convinced me to vote independence based on her work ethic, her policies and her own personal views on the world. I can’t vote for Kate Forbes because I truly believe in a modern, pluralistic democracy where religion and politics shouldn’t mix and she’s already made comments that clearly indicate that her religion does indeed influence her politics and I don’t want the ‘wee frees’ hardline 19th century Protestantism and paternalistic views in modern politics.

One of two key to independence requirements is parliamentary arithmetic at Westminster that is anti act of Union & pro English independence in an inclusive federal way that serves both North & South England. That means helping along with Plaid Cymru, SDLP & Sinn Fein & Scottish greens providing expertise in formation & strategy because it's beneficial & essential for those independence Nations parties. Once an ENP gains seats & gets support for from other Nations backers for campaigns on identity and policy then they can squeeze the union parties to give way on Indy2. That's key to overcoming union blockage. It's missing in SNP, plaid Cymru & SDLP & Sinn feim & Scottish greens strategy

The dial of independence may not have been shifted, but Salmond's idea that she should be judged by how far she moved that dial, is not quite fair. What about improving the image of those campaigning for independence? Surely this is extremely valuable towards the end goal? And she has surely done that successfully. It's going to be a long slog, if the Scots want independence from the rest of us, and they needed to start with winning hearts and minds, and building coalitions, which she has surely done to an extent.

A Nations Conscience A Nations Identity Any Scottish Government worth its salt would not allow the Stone of Scone to be used in the forthcoming Coronation Service for many justified reasons. The english have treated the Sovereign Scots People disgustingly down the centuries even up til now and need to apologise by means of such a magnanimous gesture - duly recognised & instructed by King Charles the III.
