Black Entertainment Television (BET) is an American basic cable and satellite television channel that is owned by the BET Networks division of Viacom. It is the most prominent television network targeting African American audiences, with approximately 88,255,000 American households (75.8% of households with television) receiving the channel. The channel has offices in Washington, D.C., New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago.
Programming on the network consists of original and acquired television series and theatrically and direct-to-video-released films. The network has also aired a variety of stand-up comedy, news, and current affairs programs, and formerly aired mainstream rap, hip-hop and R&B music videos; the latter of which now air on its branded sister networks. After stepping down as a lobbyist for the cable industry, Freeport, Illinois native Robert L. Johnson decided to launch his own cable television network. Johnson would soon acquire a loan for $15,000 and a $500,000 investment from media executive John Malone to start the network. The network, which was named Black Entertainment Television, launched on January 25, 1980. Initially broadcasting for two hours a week as a block of programming on Nickelodeon (it would not be until 1983 that BET became a full-fledged channel), the network's lineup consisted of music videos and reruns of popular black sitcoms ©1980 2017 Black Entertainment Television/And VH1 Viacom International Inc All Rights Reserved.

B.E.T. was my go too place for new music when I was 8-12 years old because when I lived in Lafayette Indiana they never played Rap & R&B on the radio back in the day it would either be the 50s and 60s oldies or Pop/Rock Music . Enough said , BET Fell completely off after 2009 💯💯
Robert Johnson is The best chairman of B.E.T. in history for over 4 Decades the first African-American program in any cable TV show.

BET has opened new doors for many networks after its criticism such as Bounce, TV One, Dabl and the 365, so it was great. It was a beautiful thing.
It is very unfortunate that today’s generation will never experience the real BET. I’m 35 and during the 90’s and early 2000’s, the tv stayed on BET (especially during the summer)

I kinda find it odd that BET came out almost 2 years before MTV and no black record companies tried talking to BET??
Don't know if you're ever gonna see this but BET actually never aired on Nickelodeon that's a false rumor floating around the internet. It actually aired on USA network from 1980 to 1983. But speaking of Nickelodeon, isn't it kinda funny (or sad) that there was an all kids' network before we had an all black network.
