In this video, we go through the step-by step procedure to perform a backwash (flush) on a Bestway (Intex, Costco) above ground pool filtering system. This backwashing procedure flushes out the debris and gunk from the filter media in order to keep your pool as clean and clear as possible.
The Bestway pump described in this video is this one:
Bestway Sand Filter Pump (58498E) - amzn.to/3PqdrcZ
This pump used the polysphere filtration balls or filter sand in order to filter the water in your pool.

05:15 Backwash Setting
06:06 Rinse Setting
06:30 Filtering Setting
06:42 Recommended Pressure Setting
07:08 Recirculate Setting
07:30 Drain Setting
We go through each of the 6 settings in great detail, including the following:
1. Stop: This setting is used when you don't need the pump to circulate water, such as when you're not using the pool or performing maintenance.
2. Drain: The drain setting is used to lower the water level in the pool. When set to "drain," the pump will remove water from the pool, helping you to lower the water level for various purposes, such as cleaning or maintenance.
3. Filter: When the pump is set to "filter," it's actively pulling water from the pool and sending it through the pool's filtration system. This setting is used for regular filtration, removing debris and particles from the water as it circulates through the filter media.
4. Rinse: After backwashing, it's important to set the pump to "rinse." During this setting, clean water is sent through the filter for a brief period, flushing out any remaining debris and helping to settle the filter media back into its normal configuration before returning to the "filter" setting.
5. Recirculate: In the "recirculate" setting, the pump bypasses the pool's filter system and simply recirculates the water back into the pool. This can be useful when you want to mix chemicals or treatments into the pool water without sending it through the filter. Or if you have a solar heater and just want to circulate and mix the warm water.
6. Backwash: Backwashing is the process of cleaning the filter media. When set to "backwash," the pump reverses the water flow through the filter, dislodging and flushing out accumulated dirt and debris from the filter media. The dirty water is then sent out of the waste or backwash line.
After show and tell on the 6 pump settings, we then go through the filter trap cleaning and backwash procedure from start to finish.

I use the Clorox XtraBlue2 Chlorine. Works great: amzn.to/3OITAnc - I sprinkle in a 1-lb bag into the pool about once a week. And I use these Pool Test Strips - amzn.to/4eqwFta

Are you using an extension cord or smart plug, by chance? Sometimes those can interfere; try to avoid them. Also check the GFI test/reset button on the outlet/circuit if it has one. If not, could be a ground fault issue, so best not to override it. Good luck, hope you get it figured out.

At least once a week. Depends on how dirty your pool gets. Some people perform a backwash daily (though for shorter periods of time, like 15-20 seconds on backwash and rinse, maybe repeat a couple times.)

Yes. When you turn on the pump, water will fill into the tub where the sand (or filter balls media) is.

I hope the instruction manual didn't cause too much indigestion (For either of you!)
I got the Bestway 58515 model, got any tips on how to do it on one of those without having to spill way too much water, since the filter sits vertically?
Have you thought about upgrading your pump for faster cleaning and heat from solar system?
Your videos great. One question if you could I've been backwashing without using the rinse afterwards I didn't know about it do you think I've been putting a lot of dirt back into the pool? thanks!
@PracticalMechanic
23 күн бұрын
Some, but backwashing gets more out than rinsing. Another thing that can help is to switch between backwash and rinse several times during the procedure, just to stir up the balls more.
Hi, yes I have a question so basically I got my pool a few weeks ago and we put the filter in. Can you show me how your filter works? Which way is the water going into your pool and we have no type of pressure is only going up to 2 or 3 and is supposed to be higher than 4.0
I got cotton balls do you need to add water with a hose to get the pump started??
Thanks for this video , very helpful! Question on the inlet, not feeling the suction - shouldn’t I be?
@PracticalMechanic

On the inlet side, the suction is very slight. Just make sure the top knob on the "jet" side is FULLY in the "unlock" position. Good luck!

I have the same filter but i am not sure which setting can be used for vacuming the bottom of the pool?
I set my pool up according to the limited instructions and looking at the picture on the box. I followed your instructions to backwash, however no water comes out. When I turn the pump off and push the handle down to change positions water comes out. Any suggestions?
Another question How do you keep your pool crystal clear? Like in your video
@PracticalMechanic
13 күн бұрын
Main thing, didn't get behind on adding the chemicals! Once the algae sets in, you have to take extreme measures! I mentioned this in another video's comment, but here's the quick and simple version - when you first set up the pool, use these chemicals - in this order: Day 1 - Clarifier - amzn.to/3UOK1Gw Day 2 - Shock - amzn.to/3VfWJQ0 Day 3 - Algaecide - amzn.to/3Vf8tC9 After that - Chlorine Tablets - amzn.to/3WVxymW Then check your chemical levels with test strips - amzn.to/4eqwFta All the best, and hope you enjoy your pool this summer!
Should you be able to see the filter balls where the jet sprays the water out when using the play setting?
@PracticalMechanic
27 күн бұрын
No, they are inside the big tub.
Question so doing maintenance and adding chemicals can you leave pump in recirculate mode instead of filtering? Or whats the best mode to set your pump when trying to get your water to have acceptable testing strip readings
@PracticalMechanic
29 күн бұрын
Either filter or recirculate will work for distributing the chemicals throughout the water in the pool. That being said, on filter mode, the chemicals are also disinfecting the filter media, which can be helpful as well.
We have set this pool up and have the chlorine tab thing where the filter seems to go. Where does the chlorine tab holder go?
Is there a certain setting for vacuum to waste?
Great video! I don’t think that the hose attachment allows for proper cleaning of the filter because of the back pressure it creates. I tested this and the water coming out of the hose on backwash, was pretty clear and then I would get a plume of algae and dirt going back into the pool when filtering again. So I just left the hose fitting off and without even turning the filter on the water coming out was green. I ran backwash till clear, then rinse as you say and boom, no plume when I turned the filter back on. So no hose attachment for me when backwashing anymore. Oh and the pressure returned to normal, which it wasn’t when I was using the hose to backwash. Thought this might help someone out!

Thank you for this info, I was wondering why my backwash water was still clear, I have now removed the hose and the filter has now been cleaned. Unfortunately the water coming from the pump is causing issues but that will be tomorrow's problem.
@shottgunD
Ай бұрын
Yep, first time I back flushed I didn't use the hose attached and it seemed fine. Then I spent a very long time running a 100ft garden hose over my hill and looped through the fence so I could see the water color from about 30 feet away, the moment I turned it on it seemed like it wasn't flushing right and the psi was way up. Reverted back to large opening hose for drain valve and all is good. I suspected it might be an issue with such force going through a small opening, should have checked before running the hose. Oh well hahaha! Glad it's not just me that noticed this. Thanks.
I was wandering if you knew why my sand filter pump would be leaking around the base of the selector head, I've pretty much tightened the collar as much as I dare? I have the exact same one as is in your video. Thanks.

Great video and explanation. We have been following the steps for backwashing and rinsing, but the filter media is not picking up the small debris. When vacuuming, the debris is just shooting into the pool even just after backwashing. Anyone have this problem??
@PracticalMechanic
21 күн бұрын
In that case, I recommend cycling through the backwashing and the rinsing several times. So backwash for 30 seconds, then rinse for 30 seconds, then backwash for 30 seconds, then rinse for 30 seconds, and so on. I also recommend shaking the filter tub back and forth while doing this. It will help to dislodge some of the smaller particles trapped inside the filter media. If that doesn't work, you may need to remove the filter media balls and clean them, like this: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gGibltasZLuZcag.html Good luck, hope it helps. 👍
For general information. Do not use granular chlorine as it will settle and burn the tile print off of the vinyl base. Use chlorine tablets in a slow release float. Our pool was damaged within the first week of use.
What about when you have pool rx in your skimmer? Also, you skipped turning off the port that shoots the water into the pool?
Is there a vaccum to waste option?
Do you know why i could still be getting the cloud of dirty water coming out for about 5 seconds after backwashing and rinsing. After backwashing until clear and then rinsing until clear after turning the pump back on filter it sends a cloudy of dirty water back into the pool. I don't understand what i am doing wrong.
How do we use the drain setting if the intake/outake plumbing is in the middle of the pool? It will just drain to that point.
@PracticalMechanic
7 ай бұрын
Yes, you are correct, without changing any of the tubing it will only drain halfway. Many pools have a separate drain port very close to the bottom. Attaching a hose to that and using gravity to drain the pool the rest of the way is common. If you want to speed that up, you can swap the intake hose to that port, and use the pump on the drain setting. Good luck! 👍
