There comes a point in every Jeepers life when it becomes necessary to buy or replace the soft top on your Jeep. There are numerous choices depending on the features you need or want, and what your budget will allow.
Last issue we reviewed the Rampage Trailview Frameless Soft Top and fell in love with the easy install and the ability to open the sunroof with one-hand from inside the Jeep. This issue we got our hands on a Bestop Trektop NX Glide. While both tops are fastback styles with removable tinted windows that change your roof into a safari top, the NX Glide is the first fully convertible fastback roof!
The Glide portion of the name refers to their zipperless window install, where instead of zippers the windows slide into and out of place on tracks. The advantage is that switching from a fully enclosed roof to a safari top only takes a minute, and the glides seem to have a more watertight seal than zippers.
The fit and finish of the top is absolutely stellar. Bestop builds the factory tops for Jeep, so they have the technology and machinery to build tops that look as good as factory, because they are the factory.
The NX Glide is available in two fabrics. The 30 oz black twill which comes with 40 mm 30% tinted windows, and the slightly more affordable black diamond, with 30 mm windows. The black twill has a layer of neoprene sandwiched between the outer layer and inner lining for better sound absorption. This extra insulating layer also keeps your Jeep warmer in winter and cooler in summer. The twill is a rich looking, deep black fabric with a great interior finish, which is why it is also used in Aston Martin’s, Jaguars etc. But don’t let the soft fabric-like feel fool you as Bestop backs this fabric up with a limited lifetime warranty.
There are handy zippered mesh pockets in the roof above the driver and passenger seats, just keep in mind that when you flip the Sunrider back, to provide both front and rear seats with the sunroof experience, you can’t access the pockets.
It’s a no cut, no drill installation that takes one person under 4 hours, watch the Bestop install video first (I did the night before). I had the complete install done in 3.5 hours by myself.

Good review. I like the Trektop Glide, but it is very difficult to store the windows. They do not roll. Bestop says to store them in a flat position, but that is not very easy to do, and doesn't really let you travel with the windows in your jeep.

This was a very helpful video for helping me make my decision. I decided to go with this top (knowing full well that there are videos out there pointing out many potential issues with this top...search them up) The look is so cool and plus with all the features of this top, made me choose this one. Install was fairly straight forward. The top definitely needs time to stretch out and make it easier to use. Mid-spring is a good time to install so you can get a mix of warm and cool days/nights to allow the top to expand and contract so it's easier to "glide" the panels on and off. I plan to only use this for a summer top. I will go back to my hard top in the late Fall/Winter.

Thanks for sharing the info. Have a look at the Bestop Sunrider to go with your hard top for winter. I live in BC and I just got through the winter with it. It was really great to open it on the rare sunny day (while cranking up the heat)!

You're right Brad. This is the same case as the OEM soft top. Storing the windows in the roof pocket of the Rampage Trailview is a great solution - but you lose the ability to have a full convertible roof.

Whats difference between the nx plus and the nx glide? Nx glide you can fold all the way down like an oem soft top. Nx plus you can only open front half and remove windows

Great video to help us make an informed decision on a soft top option. How much work is it to go back to the hardtop at the end of the warm season? Is it another 4 hour job to uninstall anything or are some parts able to stay on the Jeep with the hardtop. Then when spring comes what is the re-install, same as original or is some work already done?

After removing the windows all you’d need to do is unclip the frame from the roll bar in the back (with two pins), and remove the 4 door surrounds which are held in with a total of 6 knob-screws, you’d also have to remove the two arches and the tailgate bar. After that just store the soft top somewhere and install the hardtop. It would probably take like 20 mins max to reinstall it all The 4 hours are for assembling the frame and the fabric, it's a one-time thing.

anyone out there had an issue with the rear crossbar rattling around annoyingly, this is the one thing that I dislike about the top, i'm going to try flex seal rubber coating, so it's not hard plastic on plastic

That thing looks like a stepped on soup sandwich when fully folded... I love the idea, but I bet you can't even see with the rear view mirror. I've been on the fence about this top since I discovered it... But I'm topless a lot more than I am window-less or sunrider'ed (® ha!), and so far, that's the biggest deal breaker... Looks like it would turn my Jeep into a parasail at windy highway speeds.

Well beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And anyone with a larger than stock tire will tell you there is no view out the back of any Jeep with a top up. However, I can vouch for the fact that it doesn't act as a parasail!

4WD Magazine I've got a 37 hanging on the back of my JK... I'm fully aware of Jeeps inherently lacking rear visibility, yet I can still make out traffic behind me... But this thing looks like it's a foot over the top of the tire. That said, after looking at a few other videos, including Bestops, it seems more likely that the top in this video just wasn't pushed down far enough...

The angle that the video is shot is low as well, making the folded roof appear taller than it is. That's just a 33" Mickey Thompson Deegan 38 all terrain tire. Looks like I'll have to buy a taller tripod. Thanks for the feedback.

Just got the top and when installing had to get a pro to help me with that back window. Going to let it stay on for a week or so before I remove it so it stretches a bit bc right now I'm scared I won't be able to get it back on after removing. That sucker was tough.

I just took mine off yesterday and noticed that temperature really does make a difference. All summer at 28+°C the back window went on and off effortlessly. Yesterday at 15°C is was noticeably stiffer. I'm not sure how hot it is where you are, but I assume that if it's cool/cold (and since the top is new), it would be best to leave it on until it stretches, and/or gets hot outside.

So I bought this top a month ago. I had to have it replaced now twice so far in the past month. I'm waiting now for Bestop to send me yet another (third) top which is supposed to be "from the new batch" (I was assured this about the previous 2 tops as well). I wish I didn't sell my factory soft top and frame, as this thing has been terrible. Most all of the troubles I had read about and had expressed to Bestop before buying it, all came true. Even after everyone at Bestop told told me these problems had been fixed etc etc. I'm afraid I'm gonna be stuck with this poorly designed and cheaply made top now, and it....really sucks. I had the original factory top which was tight fitting, didn't leak, zippers all worked fine, everything was solid. However the top was in the sailcloth fabric and I wanted to upgrade to the twill fabric. Rather than spending $2000 with Mopar/Jeep for a whole new top and frame combo, I was going to just buy the Bestop 'replace-a-top' twill for the factory frame. This is easy to do, and because Bestop's twill fabric is of good quality, this would be hard for Bestop to foul up, as they would be only supplying the fabric, and I would be using the original factory frame. When I called Bestop to order the fabric, one of their employees talked me into buying the (cool looking and cool seemingly* well designed) Trektop NX Glide top instead, assuring me all the problems which I had heard about and read about had been remedied; the problems which I had already read about in all the reviews and comments on youtube vids, the Jeep forums, Amazon reviews etc. Still, before purchasing, I then talked with several Bestop employees regarding all these issues (chiefly the windows popping out of the channels, but also the other complaints which I had read about at length), and I went over all concerns in detail with each employee. They knew of these issues, but all assured me the top is great now, all problems fixed. So I trusted them, and purchased it. The first 2 tops they sent me had the same problems, but each with its own unique 'quirks' on top of the windows popping out. Bestop will tell you the differences which occur from top to top is because they are all hand-stitched. I prefer handmade products generally, but not for a Jeep top, a Jeep which I drive nearly 40k miles in a year, and one which I often take the windows off/on, top up/down. While the glide system sounds great, and in the new JLs the glide system is great, the Bestop design and quality overall just is not even close to 'there'. I would like to support them because they have been around for so long, and they are the better of the aftermarket choices for tops, but the quality is not close to the factory. And no, Bestop's tops are not made in the same factories as Jeep/Mopar's, and while Bestop supplies them, the Mopar tops are much better quality. Get up close to one of Bestop's 'Supertop NX' and compare it to the factory tops. It's the same design, but look closer. Play around with the 2 and see the difference in quality. (digression: I wish Mopar would make the new JL design soft tops for JKs, or that Bestop would duplicate the JL design tops in both design and quality. People would buy them off the shelves. I saw and tried a JL soft top, and it was far superior all around, and the glide channels are far better made than Bestop's). Anyway, does anyone out there still have the Bestop NX Glide top, and find it ok after using it for more than 6 months to a year? Honest answers are appreciated. Thanks

40 mil ~= 1 millimeter please stop saying that the windows are 40 millimeters thick, that would be over 1.5 inches thick which would be insane.
