Denethor sees no hope, he has looked into the Palantir of Minas Tirith. He hasn't been seduced by Sauron like Sauruman was but he has been decieved into feeling only fear and despair, that is the reason for his madness. And you are completely correct, Gandalf IS hope, he weilds Narya, the elven ring of fire, the ring made to kindle hope.

In the books, Smeagol has another name for the ring, not just "Precious" but my "Birthday Present". "It's my birthday and I wants it" The ring takes something you are already thinking or feeling and amps it up until it overrides your reason.

That's what a lot of people don't get. The ring doesn't just make you do "evil", it finds your weakness and exploits it. In most men, it simply entices them with promises of power and control. But in Sam, it found his desire to help Frodo; and in Frodo, it found his determination to sacrifice himself and do it all alone.

Boromir was Denethor's favourite entirely because he wasn't like him. He didn't hate Faramir although he certainly disfavoured him because he reminded him of his rival from his youth - a man named Thorongil (Aragorn in disguise). Faramir was more like his Father than Boromir was. Faramir was less loyal to his Father.

Gollum used to be a hobbit from a very prominent family. His Grandmother was matriarch of the family and leader of the settlement. They were from a river dwelling community, not from what became the shire. Hundreds of years before the shire was ever settled.

  • @Airihi

@katieryan1188 Gollum was always corrupted. He was always stealing and doing things to get into trouble but his Grandmother was the head of the community and always protecting him and letting him get away with things (she was fully aware) because he was her favorite. His friend wasn't the first one Smeagol killed. There were also a few questionable deaths by strangulation in the community, all people who had arguments or public confrontation with Smeagol, at one point.

Saruman is stabbed, fallen, impaled and ends with his head underwater, even a wizard isn't coming back from that. In the book he dies later, having escaped his tower and caused more mischief, he is killed by Wormtongue, which is why it was more important in the book that Theoden did not kill him earlier. There are enough 'endings' of this movie already, you can see why they decided to kill Saruman off here instead.

These intros keep getting better and better 😂 Magy, your "little people matter" campaign throughout the reaction really made the dark moments a lot more bearable, appreciate it ❤ During that flashback scene, we can already see Smeagol wasn't the brightest of the bunch and that creepy attitude was already present, even before the ring took hold of him. The vibes changed almost instantly, like you very well noticed, Magy. No matter how good a person you are, the Ring will still break you. It might not be as fast but it will happen nonetheless. It's also worth noticing the Ring was in Smeagol's possession for hundreds of years, so it had ample time to completely turn him into the despicable creature you see. Such a small detail that might go unnoticed but it's heartwarming to see how Aragorn is the one who keeps encouraging Gandalf from time to time. It really drives home the fact that Gandalf takes his mortal role seriously, he has fears and doubts, just like a regular human being. In a way, Pippin is a bit similar to Smeagol - both couldn't help themselves when Sauron tempted them - Smeagol with the Ring and Pippin with the Palantir, which has been corrupted by Sauron. It took Pippin a lot of time to actually grow up but his character arc really got fleshed out during his stay in Minas Tirith. You can't really blame Elrond for being so against Arwen staying behind and choosing Aragorn - it must be a terrible burden, knowing he will live forever without ever seeing his daughter again. Theoden accepting Merry as an esquire of Rohan - a small gesture but it clearly made Merry so happy, knowing he can help. Denethor played a very similar role in this 3rd part as Theoden did in the second movie - constantly yapping about how hopeless everything is. There is a reason for that - he was influenced by Sauron in a very similar way to Saruman - through a Palantir. Saruman had one in his tower and so did Denethor in Minas Tirith. The elves long suspected at least 1 of the Palantirs fell into Sauron's hands and they stopped using theirs, realizing the network formed by these stones is corrupted. Denethor obviously thought he was too smart and careful to fall for Sauron's deceit, just like Saruman. Frodo sending Sam away because of Gollum's deceit is probably one of the most heartbreaking scenes in this trilogy. Seeing a soul as pure as Sam broken down like that - very hard to watch. That last charge of Faramir, while Pippin sings - what a chilling scene. It's so satisfying to see how Eomer's perception of Merry changed. He made fun of his stature and doubted his courage when the battle starts but after the defense of Minas Tirith, he carried Merry on his horse when they made their last stand in front of the gates to Mordor. Gandalf knocking Denethor out and rallying the defense of Minas Tirith is such an inspiring scene to watch. Everyone followed him into battle, trying to repel the overwhelming orc armies and siege weapons.

Smeagol was actually being honest when he claimed he wasn't going to hurt them. Yes, he was leading Frodo and Sam to their deaths, but he wasn't going to be the one to actually kill them, which in his mind was probably perfectly alright.

2:45 How someone takes the ring is icnreadibly important to how it affects you, Gollum took it by forc ekkillign the previous owner thus delivering himself into it's gasp. Bilbo however took it by accident and when the ring urged him to slay the previous owner he chose Mercy, it's why despite holding the ring for so long he shows so little signs of corruption. Frodo was given it freely and kept it because it reminded him of Bibo's love for him.

My advice; it is better not to ask Denethor for help during his soul-weighing grief for a child he had lost. Gandalf can be incredibly wise for sometime, the rest he is becoming carelessly unaware to somebody else's well-being. For example; If I was Denethor and the last person who I cared about the most said those last awful words without realizing when we'll never see each other again, I would feel completely lost to myself. War is coming yes, just not even that close. Therefore, there is still time to heal ourselves with sorrow before taking up arms and fight our way for redemption.

Honestly, Saruman's death scene ruins this trilogy. It's an added scene for the extended edition and it's actually garbage. Also the added scenes with the army of ghosts is shit too. The first two extended editions are so damn good but this one just ruins it. The theatrical cut is way better.

How do those scenes ruin it?

@@noellegoble7944 Saruman's death is basically a joke. It's borderline a comedy scene. In the theatrical cut he's seen for one moment after Gandalf says "He has no power now." Implying he's just going to stay in the tower and fade into memory. In the book he goes to The Shire and does a little chaos before being met with Frodo. In the end Saruman sort of just fades into obscurity. (I'm paraphrasing) but anyway, I'd argue that the theatrical cut is more in line with that kind of ending than his looney tunes death scene in the extended edition. As for the Army of Ghosts scenes, they completely ruin their impact. In the theatrical cut, Aragorn asks them "what say you?" and then it cuts away. We don't know if the ghosts accept of not, we're left on that question. We don't see Aragorn again until the final battle when the ship appears and he jumps out. The enemies smirking at his charge only for him to be followed by an army of ghosts. It's incredibly satisfying. In the extended edition. We get an answer from the Ghosts saying they'll fight. Then we have a new scene of Aragorn stealing the ship. Which has him approaching, the enemy smirking and then an army of ghosts charging from behind Aragorn. It's just THE EXACT SAME SCENE AGAIN. Only now it's before the final version. SO they repeat the same scene after already taking the impact of the decision away, now they've taken the impact of the army of ghosts fighting away. The first two extended editions are great, Return of the King's extended edition is shit.
