The spring of 2024 will go down as one of the best, if not the best, spring for fishing walleye and sturgeon on the Rainy River. Big numbers of big fish were caught from Birchdale to the Gap. The 3rd annual two-day Fish Donkey tournament to celebrate Sporting Journal Radio's 500th episode (SJR500) took place April 9th - 10th at River Bend Resort and the stories of big fish were coming from everyone.
Anglers entered over 100 sturgeon into the tournament with a 68" caught by Jamie Dietman as our winner for big sturgeon. Second place was Ben Davis with a 65" and Jesse Sanders with a 64.5". Biggest walleye was Dustin Nielson with a 30", Austin Nesvold had a 28.5" and Joe Henry took 3rd with a slightly smaller 28.5".
