"Why is the youngest Doctor the wisest?" Here's the thing: of all the Doctors, the First is the only one to have have lived an entire life. He was born, he was a child, grew into young adulthood, middle age and finally the indignities of old age. In contrast, the Second Doctor on, we're seeing a new incarnation come into being, fully formed as an adult. They may be chronologically older, but they are not older in terms of their maturity. The Second Doctor did not experience childhood (aside from the limited memories they each seem to carry on). He didn't experience seeing himself grow larger, stronger, more capable, before witnessing his own slow slide into old age. When in a group, people naturally defer to the oldest member of the group as a leader, or at least as someone who's opinion matters. This could be merely politeness, but I believe it is also recognition of the lifetime of information and experiences they have gained. I'm pretty well educated and have a successful career. But if my 81 year old grandfather were to walk in the door right now, I'd see him as the more experienced person in general. Similarly, the First Doctor is treated as a respected elder by the other Doctors for the same reasons: politeness, and recognition that he has really EARNED his white hair and wrinkles. "Wow, here's a guy who actually lived and experienced hundreds of years of learning that I only vaguely remember. Better listen to him, if only because he's so damn tetchy!" Great video!

LOVE LOVE LOVE the first dr! He’s definitely the most underrated and if you watch for it, he has a stellar sense of humor. I love susan, I love the romans, the space museum and some of his target books are the best to be found. Somebody else said it but it couldn’t be more true, the first four doctors are the best and that’s just fact. I wish there wasn’t so many missing episodes, it’s tragic.

@Jack The Film Fanatic Same here, only I add also David Tennant as an honourable mention... However really in my humble opinion I like them all, as an old soldier once said they are all splendid chaps (plus one lady) all of them... But yes, when you cut it down to the bare facts the first four Doctor's are the best and they always will be. The first 18 years of the Classic Series will never, ever be bettered! Maybe you'll get the odd episode or storyline, or even perhaps maybe a season that will equal those first 18 years, but no they will never, ever be bettered. Happy Times and Places

@@TakeNoteOfThat I still think Dalek Invasion is the definitive Hartnel Dalek story, the chase is good but it's more of a comedic story. Master Plan starts out well, but then starts to miss the original tone in the later episodes, and they bring up the Monk for seamingly no good reason. (Not to mention that it's really long and in no way justify it's 12 parts. Also it's one of those stories that are really hurt by missing episodes.)

My two favourite Hartnell stories have to be The Tenth Planet and The Daleks. The Daleks has this slow yet quick pace that really makes this seven parter feel more like a five parter. It arguably saved the show as it was originally going to be cancelled after just thirteen episodes. The Daleks ensured the show would survive. The Tenth Planet is a methodically paced base under siege. Some would say it is the original base under Seige story, the first appearance of the Cybermen is one of their best. It's only hampered by the idiotic General Cutler, though of course you're meant to be assuming he has some screws loose anyway, and some rather questionable science.

It's weird that one of the more divisive and disliked stories like the Web Planet led to a well liked prose story like The Lair of Zarbi Supremo. Sidenote: I plan to read the original Agatha Christie because I like Agatha Christie stories and I heard good things about it.

ok, now onto defending stuff. I like the Monk. I don't think he makes the Doctor look like a hypocrite if you do him right. They both meddle with time, yes. But the Doctor does it in the best interests of the universe, and realises when they can stop most of the time. The Monk does it because he is selfish. the last season of the Lucie Miller audios touch on this well in my opinion. I like the Marinus and I think the only letdown is the Voord. I like The Celestial Toymaker but I only listened to the audio and I feel it'd be not so great if it was found. I've already touched on the racism. I agree with you on Dodo, and it should've been darker instead of childish I do agree. But I think its fun, in the same way you find The Romans fun except I'm in the minority and it's less problematic to enjoy The Romans. Galaxy 4. I liked the recon on The Aztecs DVD but I'm scared it'll be shit if I watch the full thing. The Web Planet is bad. it sounds like something that heck, both of us specifically would find something in but there's NOTHING. I like the scale, that's it.

Number 1 is one of my favourite Doctors. I understand that Troughton is really more iconic and influential, but I’ve always had a fondness for the “wise old mentor” character in fiction, for me he recalls Obi-Wan Kenobi, Professor Albus Dumbledore, Charles Xavier. There’s also a classic feel to his stories, this is where it all began and I often love the first in a series of stories (my favourite Star Wars is A New Hope, my favourite movie of all time as well). The stories also feel so unique, as very few of them are what Doctor Who became or it is now. The stories are very slowly paced and dramatic. Even the High-Concept Sci-fi never feels the same as the Troughton space stories, and so incredibly different to Pertwee, Baker, McCoy, Smith or really any Doctor. Heck, it’s the only era where every episode of nearly every story has its own title and ends with ‘Next Episode (title of the next episodes)’. The first time we got a Troughton style story must’ve been The Tenth Planet, but contrast that with The Sensorites, or The Reign Of Terror.

Two great things about The Web Planet are that it was partially inspirational for Captain Scarlett and the Mysterons (notably the rubbing of vaseline on the camera, used for a scene in Captain Scarlett), as well as the fact that when Classic Who was being streamed on Twitch, The Web Planet was actually trending and was one of the most anticipated stories on the stream, all because of what I think was something stupid like a misplaced disc or something like that.

and he does, you have to remember THIS doctor, despite his aged appearance is only 250/300 years old, by Gallifreyan standards only a young man, early to mid 20's by human standards, and no, he is not human, nor does he pretend to be, but he DOES learn to appreciate other ideas as he goes along. There are many theories as to why in the multi doctor stories, the later doctors defer to the youngest, the main one being he is the most pure, he grew up on Gallifrey from child to young adult and is more aware of some things, he is also chronologically the oldest (up til 11th) not actual age, but age in incarnation. Think about it as stated he was about 300 years old when he regenerated. 2nd stated he was 450 earth years old 4ths age went from 742 to 759 during his 7 year run, so how old was 2nd and 3rd when THEY regenerated? If you even it out about 150 years each 6th stated he was 900 7th 956 so how old was 5th again only about 100 years. Each new incarnation is quite young and quite easily influenced. So yes, he does become more human, the most human being 10th the most utterly alien is actually 4th

On the Tenth Planet DVD there's a special feature with Peter Purves, Frazer Hines and the guy that played Turlough called "Boys! Boys! Boys!" Where they recall their experiences on Doctor Who, and Peter says how he just had some walk on role originally as that Hill Billy and and it was only later that Ian and Barbara would be leaving so they just called him to be the replacement.

Hartnell and Troughton have always been the 2 people that gave us the doctor who we have today and have it their longevity. Hartnell made children fall in love with the doctor.. troughton made the nation fall in love with doctor who. Legends As for Moffat, I don’t understand the constant complaints that he made the first doctor sexist and a misogynist when that’s what the first doctor was actually like. In multiple stories he actually says he’s gonna slap Susan’s “bottom” and makes similar comments like he did to Bill yet everyone acts like Moffat disrespected hartnell.

Well, there's a difference to threatening to smack your teenage granddaughter and doing the same to a fully grown woman you just met. I don't really have much of a problem with Moffat's portrayal of the First Doctor, I'm just saying it was rather strange, especially given this was Tenth Planet Hartnell, not Unearthly Child Hartnell. I'm just going to guess he was just trying to annoy 12 or convince the Captain he was human.

He put his heart and soul into that role and he was treated as a joke so Moffat could say “Look how woke we are now” but that’s really not the representation we want or need if it’s going to belittle what came before.

I always wish the The Monk would come back with an updated version of the argument. Coming up with a good argument would be interesting. Maybe have The Doctor argue that humanity NEEDS to have gone through certain struggles to strengthen us as a species. Show a Meddling Monk version of the world where humanity has never struggled with anything, and has become lazy, and never spreads into the rest of the universe, eventually being destroyed by the expansion of the sun.

Posting for the third time... I need to learn to watch a whole video before commenting... Anyway... “MARCO POLO”.... I have no words! MY FAVORITE DOCTOR WHO STORY OVER THE WHOLE SERIES! 😭😭❤️❤️ I agree with “The Time Meddler”! I don’t know why so many like it! I’m sad that “Keys of Marinus” is one of the “worst” but I understand, not everybody’s cup of tea. I like “The Celestial Toymaker”, I understand the hype, but again, I understand why it’s not as well loved. Love The Rills! Wasn’t a fan of “Galaxy 4” I loved “The Web Planet”! 😭 Two of my favorite stories (“The Keys of Marinus” and “The Web Planet”!) are on the worst list! 😢

julie everett I don’t know! I kind of like it being one of the “mysterious” missing ones! Now “The Dalek Masterplan” is one I wish could be recovered simply because of the companions we meet (and lose). To give them their one to shine! Because, honestly, Katarina being the first official companion to die, should be honored. And Sarah Kingdom! She was a BAMF! And her death was DARK! I couldn’t have imagined watching that on tv as a kid!
