    This might already be mentioned in the comments, but at T-Mobile it is 24 months and if you pay off your phone before 24 months you continue to get the credits at account level. The catch with T-Mobile is you have to be on the highest price plan to get the best trade in deal and when you add up that cost per month above the middle tier plan you pay wayyyy more in two years! We are on Magenta with 7 lines and two watches for $180/mo if we upgrade to the new Plus plan to get the best trade in value our monthly service(not including any eip) bill would go up $80/mo!! We are looking at ATT now cause of this.

    I’m not a big fan of that one. You basically pay half of full price for every phone every year and the force Apple Care+ on you. You don’t get to turn the phone in as a trade after 12 months. You just give it back and start a new contract. It costs over $650 to upgrade a phone on that every year vs. buying and trading this year costing you $380. I’m not a fan of payments, generally, either.

    Thank you for the great information! I was trying to go with Verzion's 36th month payment plan and learned that you actually don't have to go wit 36th month payment plan. There is an option where you can just buy the phone upfront and still get the $800 trade in value. So then does that make verzion's deal much better?

    Really well done (thumbs/scribe) -the only question I have left is that trading in my iphone xr for an iphone 14 pro max comes in at sharply difft payments between Verizon and ATT. I’m with ATT, and have a 45 a month package (down from 75). So if ATT says 40 something a month for upgrade w trade in (ascribing negligible 140 value to trade in xr phone), and Verizon says 800 for trade in, are they playing games in the underlying contract for phone service? Welcome any insight. And thanks for all the work you did on this.

  • @Techthusiasm

    Thanks! The carriers make it hard to understand exactly what they are offering. You need to unwind the details on a specific offering. You know the retail price of the phone, you know the term of months for the commitment, so you should be able to figure out the monthly cost of the phone at full price minus the cost being quoted with trade and multiply by the term to arrive at the effective trade value.

    What you have to keep in mind is; have to pay for new case for each phone is appropriately $40. I’ve been with ATT for many years. Also, my carrier ATT will charge activation fee which is about $30. which I think should be forgiven because of my longevity.

  • @Techthusiasm

    @Techthusiasm

    You can't trade in a non-paid off phone for a new installment deal. It has to be paid off so that you own it outright, then trade it. Thus, they are probably telling you need to finish paying off that 11 Pro Max before you can trade it in for a 14. If you pay it off early against the installment plan, yes, you will lose the future credits. But you're trading it in again for bigger value against the installment payments of the new phone. It's hard to say if this works in your favor or not without all the detailed numbers. You might be best off just waiting and paying off the 11 Pro Max on your current installments with the credits and then trade it in.

    With the 36month plan, doesn’t the carrier just give you a credit every month for the 36months, if you end up paying off the plan 24 months into it you basically loose the remain 12 months of credit and effectively get less for your trade in.

  • @Techthusiasm

    @Techthusiasm

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes, the $1,000 credits are 36 months deals now. So the credit is spread over 36 months same as the payments for the phone are. So if you keep it for 36 months, you end up even and own the phone outright. If you decide to upgrade before then, you must pay off the phone. Yes as well, if you pay off the phone at 24 months, you would lose the remaining twelve months of credits, but realize the phone didn't cost anything per month the whole 2 years if you traded in a 2 year old model. And you will trade in the phone you now own to start a new cycle. There's a cost to upgrade whether you do it at 1, 2, or 3 years with some variance on how much that actually is.

    Crossing carriers might change the deals a little bit, but maybe not. If you plan to leave, you’ll probably have a paid for phone or you’ll pay it off any way with the old carrier. In that case, you’re just trading it in to the new carrier like any other phone you might own for the same deals.

    If you got it through apple just pay the amount left and trade it in. If you’re on a carrier plan you might have to set this one out until you fully pay it off unless you could contact them and ask if you can pay what’s left but might not be possible.

  • @Techthusiasm

    Then maybe just take the hit and pay it off, which would enable you to trade it back in for $1,000. Per the video, if you would plan to upgrade phones every 2 years, that’s the way to go.

    How long would you keep the next phone? If it's 2 or 3 years, then I would. Trade the 12 Pro Max in for the $1,000 deal. The 14 Pro Max will cost you $100 over 36 months . Just make sure you're happy being locked to AT&T for that period. That a two generation upgrade as well.

    @@Techthusiasm personally I hate being stuck with perpetual payments, it's why I don't lease cars, Your more or less renting a car from the manufacturer. I upgraded my phone every 3-5 year's, I just got the Galaxy S22 Ultra this year, but I really only did that because Samsung was giving out a $800 credit for any galaxy that you trade in.

    Yep, I agree. We are Dave Ramsey fans here. No debt except our home. Technically going into installments with a carrier is a form of debt, but since you get $1,000 back it’s a little bit different to me. If you’re keeping phones that long, I’d suggest capping them at 3 years, trade them in, and do take the installment though. If makes your new upgrade every 3 years cost only about $200, similar to what you just did.

    That's for a straight trade in. If you trade in an 11 Pro Max (with AT&T for example) and put the 14 Pro Max on installments, they'll give you $800 for it.

    No, to get the big money trade in you have to put the phone on installments. Hence the idea if you swap phones every year then just trade and pay. If you’re going 2 or 3 years, then do the installment trade which is more $$$ to you.

    I'm an Android fan mainly Samsung. New phones,for my pockets,cost too much. I remember when $400-$500 was a lot. I usually purchase my phones refurbished,outlet,discounted or used. I usually keep them 3 maybe 4yrs. Even after 3yrs my phones look brand new. I buy the cover before I receive the phone. I rarely use it in the house I have MagicJack for my house phone usage and I love it. As a matter of fact I need to renew my plan before this month is out. I haven't traded any of my phones in for discount I usually gift them to my nephew. I was going to pay up for the new Samsung s22 ultra this year but my BoostMobile plan would have changed from $35 mo. to $50. I said,"No thank you"! I have the 10+ now & 0 is wrong with it I just had the upgrade itch. I'm grandfathered in on the $35mo. plan & it's no longer available. So as long as I don't get another phone my rate won't increase. Guess I'll have this phone until it turns to dust!!🤣👨🏾‍🦲
