    Scott. Thanks for another OUTSTANDING video. I admire and RESPECT your honesty when you stated that certain techniques didn't quite work out as well as you had hoped. I wish other people were secure enough in themselves to admit that something fell short of expectations. PLEASE keep up the good work. I look forward to your next video. Thanks, sir.

    Former Hoosier here, glad to be away from that humidity and heat. Thanks for giving me the courage I needed to tackle my driveway. Two weeks ago after viewing your (and other) videos, I used Sita Pro to seal cracks in my driveway and inside my garage. First, I used my drill with an abrasive nylon wheel to clean out the cracks. I used foam ropes and sand to fill the bottom of the cracks, leaving a 1/2" for the Sita sealant. Then I covered with sand. For the largest cracks/wholes up to 2" across I used Slab sealant. During the week I allowed for curing, the daily highs were 55-75 but dry. The driveway looks great today. (My neighbor did Sita fill a year ago. The Sita is still quite noticeable) The garage floor is another matter. There, most of the cracks were narrower. In an attempt to get a more level surface and fill the cracks, I used a putty knife to force the Sita into the cracks and tried to level it with the floor. I used a 2nd coat of Sita for the deeper cracks. The 2nd coat did not self-level - I used an tube opened the day before. The knife left a paper-thin layer of Sita on the floor so I had many wide stripes crisscrossing the floor. Ended up painting the floor to cover the stripes. The floor looks pretty good, much better than the unfilled cracks or the Sita stripes. If I did it again, I would consider using an angle grinder to smooth out the crack edges.

    I've used Silka on many of the cracks in my driveway about 12 years ago. It's worked extremely well, and has held up perfectly over the last 12 years. Before this I had weeds growing everywhere. I've also used a similar product from Akona in expansion joints in a sidewalk. 2 years later, and it's also holding up well. I think any polyurethane based crack sealer will work relatively the same. They all cure into a rubber like consistency. I've never used any backer rod, I've just cleaned out the cracks with a power washer, and filled them with the product. It wasn't cheap at around $60 of product to fill these cracks/expansion joints, but given that it's held up for 10+ years, that's very cheap for the results you get.

    I used Sika SL to fill the deep expansion joints on my covered patio slab. The wife was tired of having to dig/vacuum leaves out of the joints. Four slabs, two joints. One was essentially perfectly level. The other had a slope of about 1/4 inch per foot. I took a chance and used the SL on the sloped joint and it worked without flowing, results were good. The only thing to be very careful about is getting the product on surfaces you don't want it on. Once it finds its way onto a surface, it is there for eternity.

    I just filled a big gap at a customer's garage entryway last week. I happened to run into the Sika rep at the store when I walked over to look the products. He was very helpful, informative, and recommended their 3/4" backer rod. Which gave me the confidence I needed to complete the job. Do you do the research for your videos online or spend time talking with representatives? Either way, thanks so much from a handyman operating in Cleveland/Akron suburbia.

    After a very hot summer in Milwaukee, I finally got around to patching the cracks on my sidewalks and patio. I used the same method and Tremco sealer, but the sealer was not liquid consistency as video shows. It was more like a toothpaste consistency, which angered me. I ended up smoothing out with my rubber gloved finger. I purchased a few tubes from Amazon and I bought a few tubes from Home Depot months ago and waited for cooler weather that finally arrived today September 8th. Maybe this Tremco sealer was old? I had the tubes stored in my garage out of the sun, but maybe the summer heat in my garage hardened?? Maybe I should have stored in my cool basement. Not sure, but the job wasn't as easy with the Tremco toothpaste consistency.

    Loctite has a much denser spray foam that may have resulted in less settling. The end result is more similar to what professionals use. Essentially, you get more foam and less air bubbles in the finished product.

    If you are going to redo the Sika self levelling section, how would you go about removing the old application and prepping the area for another application? Yeah the great stuff, I commented on.. it’s notorious for collapsing over time.. and I don’t feel like that leveling was at all professional, or a lasting fix..temp sure.. but if I looked out and saw a contractor drilling holes and filling the holes..I’d 2nd guess my decision on hiring him…with that said though…time will tell if I’m wrong, and I’m excited to see if it holds.

    I'm going to say it again - press wash / wire brush scrub out, clean it and let dry, use fine kiln dried sand to fill all the cracks, it will fall right into every little crevice filling up better than backer rod and you don't have to worry about different sizes, then quality self leveling product. I used Novalink SL and Sikaflex SL. 12 big tubes of Novalink then ran to HD for 2-3 tubes of Sika. I tried a small tube of the non self leveling Sika in a couple of spots on my sidewalk and it was garbage - didn't make it 1 year and just pulled up.

    This is good advice. This is largely what I did with my cracks as well. The Silka product works very well, but you DO have to clean out the crack/joint as you mention with a pressure washer.

  • @SilentEarthMovers

    I experienced a problem when I pressure washed or even hose-washed cracks. Even though the expanded area that I intended to caulk was only 1/4" or 1/2" deep, the cracks actually ran all the way through the slab. When I introduced water, dirt came up through the cracks, muddying everything up. How did you avoid this?

  • @whattheschmidt

    @whattheschmidt

    Жыл бұрын

    @David Siegal I probably had better drainage. I would try a leaf blower right after pressure washing and see if that's clean and gets the water and dirt out of the way. If it keeps coming up, I think there's a problem with grading. Water should be at the top though, not dirt / mud after power washing.

    Do you think the sika or the vulkem is a better sealant? After watching you earlier video, I sealed several cracks on the top 1/3 of my driveway, after I had it professionally mud jacked. Prior to the mud jacking, I had a 2-4imch drop from garage floor to driveway. Now it's pretty level. I didn't want water getting back under those slabs so I sealed with the silka. It was actually quite a job and I went through a lot of product. After cleaning.the joints, I used fine sand below the silka. That seemed to work well. I do need to sal several remaining cracks this summer, so wanted to know if you preferred the sika or vulkem? Which do you think will last longer

    The amount of weeds that grow in the cracks will be proportional to how much dirt is present for the weeds to take root. If you have a persistent weed growing through the seal, Pull the weed, remove that section of the seal, apply a herbicide, and reapply the seal using the techniques in this video series.
