I have both size grayls and love them. Youre right that the larger version is better for hunters, hikers and general woodsmen. But i find that the ultralight model is good for fishermen (freshwater that is) since youre in or around water all day so you dont exactly have to carry water to the next source.

I have several Grayls and the Pathfinder nesting cup with a bag. David is not BSing. It is a GREAT system. The Nesting Cup is perfect. I highly recommend. Excellent advice on how to "save" the filter by not using, pre filtering, etc. Don't use up a resource when you don't have to. I gave one to my son who travels a lot for his work and he loves not as well. Don't worry about the water...filter it. And I am just some Joe. Not affiliated or paid for by Pathfinder.

The Grayl has been a game changer for me. It combines two items into one for me, and lives in my pack. I have a milbank bag I got off of Etsy that fits over the Grayl itself. I use it all the time. I dont even fill my water bottle prior to heading out-just fill up at whatever water source I find at my local trailheads. The advantage of living in New England-theres almost always water, everywhere.

Straining or pre-filtering really saves the Grayl filters. Ever since doing so (I just use a bandana and a ranger band) my filters last way longer and stay easy to press down.

Your nesting cup was a great product, I have 4 of them for all my geopresses. I wish you’d make one for the ultra press, I have a titanium cup that kind of works but is a little loose. I always carry the nesting cup with my grayls just as a back up and as a cooking and boiling/ char cloth etc. The Grayl was a definite game changer for me.

I like your approach to the use of the Millbank style bag and boiling of the water as a reasonable generic approach to water sanitizing, but I am not sure that the Grayl will always be the best companion device, especially for hiking and similar situations. The Sawyer range is likely my preferred product line.

  • @vzmichael

I have Grayl Ti and appreciate the way it could be used in both the backcountry as well as urban EDC settings. Sure it's a heavier item, but it produces A superior Results and is more versatile than a squeeze style filter. For example, you are not likely to carry and use a squeeze style filter into an airport or a kids ball game to source water from water fountains drink machines, and taps whereas the Grayl looks just like any other bottle and filtering is FAST so you filter snd go. I personally combine it with a double wall bottle packed full of ice for balls-hot NW Florida summers. Also a Pathfinder Millbank bag for the woods.

Seems like a good approach to a water filter. However, we frequently have temperatures below freezing. In those conditions, you can carry a sawyer type filter under your clothes next to your skin to keep it from freezing. Is this possible with the grayl?

I would argue that the Ultrapress has some advantages over the Geopress that are a bit more subtle but worth considering if you are using them as part of a system The issue I have with the Geopress is that it's a weird shape and capacity, at 24 oz. The Ultrapress being 16 oz is really nice for filling containers. Exactly 2 presses fills a 1 liter canteen like a Hydroflash or Nalgine type bottle, or even a military surplus canteen. Additionally, if you are using an MSR cookpot, the bigger 1.1 liter pot is filled perfectly by 2 pumps as well, and I bet the smaller 600ml one would be filled perfectly by only 1 pump. It basically serves to make sure purified water isn't being wasted. I just see it as a good idea to use the press in conjunction with a more robust canteen since it allows you to carry more water, and makes sure backwash stays out of the purification chamber of the Grayl itself, which is something I don't think everyone considers with this sort of system. Another advantage is the form factor. The Geopress has that weird taper, while the Ultrapress doesn't. A more subtle shape consideration is the fact that the Ultrapress is exactly the same height as one of those previously stated Nalgine/Hydroflask type wide mouth bottles, so if you have a backpack with those bottle pouches on the back, like a Duluth pack or even an old ALICE pack, or a couple of those MOLLE water bottle pouches, you fit the bottle in one, and the Ultrapress in the other. Any pouch that the bottle fits in, you know the Ultrapress will also fit in. The Ultrapress just has an easier form factor to work around They are small details, but I think the Ultrapress shouldn't be slept on for it's own advantages
