Best View From A Castle? - Llansteffan Castle.

On a hill above the estuary of the River Towy in Carmarthenshire sits the magnificent Llansteffan Castle. It was built on the site of an older Iron Age Promontory Fort and has been in use for millennia, and it’s not hard to see why. It’s not only a highly defensible location, but affords some stunning views over the River Towy, and the village of Llansteffan itself. If you go to the top of the tower at the right time, you might even get to see a train in the distance.
Today, it’s all about location, and Llansteffan has got one of the best views of the sea we’ve seen from a castle. It isn’t actually the sea, it’s the estuary of the River Towy with the sea in the distance. Whatever it is, it’s beautiful.

I have been here . Entrances fascinate, I wonder who was the last person to pass through the main gatehouse. When was the last use of the portcullis?

I wonder who that might be. There was a Lord of Llansteffan called Maurice FitzGerald, who lost the castle when It was captured by Maredudd ap Gruffydd in 1146, but he didn't build it. It was built about a century before his time by the Normans who were busy invading Wales and building castles all over the place. It was first given to the Norman Marmion family, specifically to Roger Marmion, Lord of Fontenay. If you are the heir to the castle of Llansteffan then clearly you need to to return to the castle, raise and army and either fight to subjugate the Welsh or lead the Welsh against the English. It's a toss up really. I think the current owners of the castle might be a bit cross with you if you did though. 😀
