I am working on my PhD in linguistics, and I’m doing research on exactly this strategy! Playing ACNH is a great way to get exposure to a language and pick up new vocabulary.

I’ve been doing this pretty much since I started learning French in 2017 with ACNL

That’s a very cool topic for a PhD. Best of luck! Please do share any of your work with us :)
I am learning Italian by playing video games and there are 3 games I recommend for anyone with a PC and a Steam account. -Influent: a game where you walk around your room and every object has reading, listening and speaking practice through quizzes. -Noun Town: A cute game were you bring color back to different locations in the world by practicing reading and speaking in your target language. -Newcomer: An RPG where talking with characters and dialogue options are all in your target language and all battles are word recognition quizzes.

Wow these are amazing suggestions. Grazie mille! Non vedo l’ora di giocare a questi giochi :)
It's insane how relevant this is to me, my partner is Italian so I am currently trying to learn the language. It is my birthday in two weeks and I know a friend is getting me animal crossing for switch so this will be an awesome way to help with my learning, thanks so much for the tip!

I’ve found my niche! Thanks for the comment 😍
Great video! I've literally learned 99% of my English this way: through video games. At first, I would watch my sister play games in English and have her translate words or sentences that made me curious as a child. Then I jumped into "visual novel" type of games, like Hakuouki or Danganronpa. By the end of Hakuouki, I was 50% through achieving the level I currently have. Another very interesting thing I noticed by following this method is that despite being able to read scientific articles at the end of my journey, I was struggling to even write simple sentences. Had to patch that up by chatting online on forums for a month daily.
That's so true! ACNH is my favorite game, I have at least 3,8k hours of it and recently I've started to play in japanese so I can complement my studies
i cannot believe it never occurred to me that ACNH was a great tool to practice languages!!!!! thank you for the idea :)

You’re very welcome! 🏝️
Great video, couldn't agree more. I've been playing Pokémon X in French and using DeepL (mainly via typing instead of auto-translating photographs). I've had massive gains along my journey through the game! It was a lot slower at the start, but I have a much better grip now that I'm nearing the end of the story. The writing is so much better in French than in English, and there are tons of Pokémon-variant French expressions and colloquialisms that I get to look up and learn about. Completing it will certainly give me a great springboard to hop into other games in French. 😚💖 This is way better than mind numbingly keeping up with Duolingo, though that had its place in familiarizing myself with the language. Playing an enjoyable game with actual normal writing (not "the dog is wearing shoes" practice sentence nonsense) and translating it by hand is the greatest path to fluency, especially for us without classes or the ability to globetrot at the drop of a hat.

@@RickayyB Yeah! Glad you enjoyed. 😄 Lots of great material in Pokémon, I'm sure you'll find some neat stuff if you go for it in Italian! The unique punny names for the mons and NPCs are fun too.
the game i used to play to improve my english was Persona 5 Royal. Every other game of this saga will help you a lot cause there's a lot of text and the characters talk too. If you think you miss one word you can clik a buttun to saw all the conversation and even repeat the prhase. These game can also help with the japanes

Grazie! Thanks :)
Hmm maybe I’ll beat tears of the kingdom in a different language 😮
No prior interest in language learning or animal crossing, but still pretty good video! Learning through fun activities is something I always try to do in my own quirky little ways, so it's interesting to see how this applies to even the games we play. If I ever want to retake french I may just use Stardew Valley now lmao
I wanna do this too 😮
I'm learning Chinese, which uses characters instead of letters. I really wish it would display the roman characters (Pinyin) so I could read the sentences outloud without knowing the characters. It makes this method a little difficult for me :/
Now learning English with animal crossing ❤😊
This is such a cute idea, maybe this is how I get back into Japanese?
