Constructive feedback to cover minimum system requirements when you do these reviews. Not everyone has a top end desktop tower computer. I appreciate Davinci Resolve is pro software with many great features. But it will be slow or unusable on basic computers. System recommendations I've seen are for desktop: CPU Intel Core i7 / AMD Ryzen7, 16GB+ RAM, SSD storage, and GPU with 4GB+ VRAM. Also more CPU cores is better for video editing. A reference point of what is needed. Good detailed comparison review. Appreciate all the helpful info 👍

My PC has more than minimum recommended for Davinci Resolve and so far, it is crushing, returning errors, etc. It seems that there is no other way but pay if we want work on decent software.
Used this to help make an initial decision as our small business dips its toe into YT videos. Very helpful. Thank you for your time and effort.

#question I'm currently using Adobe Premiere Elements. The only thing I'd like to have access to is more transitions/effects and text/bullet point motion effect templates (not sure if I'm describing that right) and less lag during editing. I don't do any color changing or anything extra like that . If I get to that point I'll be ready for a paid editor. What would you recommend for what I'm looking for? (Anyone feel free to answer with your suggestions :) Thank you Justin! Always so thorough and answer all the questions we might ask.

Still happy with Filmora? I have it also and really like it but ever since Filmora 12 was announced I'm finding all these additional fees which is frustrating...
Nice, this is basically the results I came to as well shopping around. Unfortunately, my PC cannot run Davinci Resolve. Surprisingly, Filmora has been extremely easy to use and run on my laptop. I tried Premier pro and it was my first choice but it seems to be buggy and slow on my PC. I may go with the easier option to crank out videos and gain editing experience before moving to Premier pro.
This guy never fails to deliver valuable content and continues to drop gems consistently! I just got done watching the 2021 video of this and already loved it and I'm now watching this video. Thank you Justin for your research and helping take the guess work out of ALL the video making/ editing software out there! @Adonis I actually haven't checked the ram utilization while using the program so I'm not too sure. I'm about 10 hours deep into online tutorials as I'm an absolute beginner and all I have been doing is shadowing what is done in the videos. The few practice edits I have done ran extremely smooth and the test exports completed very quickly.

I've just discovered your videos and find them better than any I've see so far. Thank you for helping us beginners get comfortable with video editing! Can you recommend or describe how to use hardware (GPU) optimization and any tweaks to make the editing software less resource-hungry? I have a 7 year old HP z820 workstation with dual Xeons for 16 total cores (32 logical processors) and 128 GB of RAM with an 11 GB GDDR4 GeForce GTX 1080 TI video card, but DaVinci Resolve (free version) doesn't seem to use the GPU. Just practicing with four 10-15 second cell phone 4K/30fps clips would spike all 32 logical processors. I can run games at 4K 30 fps all day long because of the video card, but wish I could get an editor to practice with that will use the GPU before I invest a lot of money into what for me is a hobby.

Thanks, Justin. I’ve been video editing for some years. I was producing video films for identification processes back in 2001/2 (first police force to do their own video editing thanks to me). From 2005 I’ve been consumer then prosumer and used all sorts of software in that time. The point you mentioned at the start suggesting you should pick the software that suits your needs is an excellent one. The point is not, in my opinion, mentioned enough on reviews, so well done. I’ve been using software you didn’t mention, PowerDirector by Cyberlink, for some years and reckon it is great. It’s on the subscription model, but very cheap. Its UI is a bit unusual in places, but I found it easy enough to learn, and if I can do it, so can most people; plus it’s very stable. However, I’ve recently cancelled my subscription and gone with DaVinci Resolve. It’s not that PD is poor, just the opposite, but Resolve is better for me. I agree with you that the UI is not the easiest, and by some distance, but the effort is worthwhile. I have Studio, getting the upgrade ‘free’ when I bought the Speed Controller. I would suggest that Studio is not worth buying separately for anyone below high level prosumer or professionals, although the masking and tracking facility in Studio 18 (still in Beta, but who could wait?) is awe-inspiring. And great fun. The Speed Controller is well worth the money, but I now wish I had bought the dearer Speed Controller/keyboard option. Reducing your content early on is encouraged in Resolve by the Cut page. I like the separate functions, such as audio, being integrated, something PowerDirector, and most other software manufacturers, could learn from. My son uses Resolve for his job in TV news. Reckons the UI is straightforward, but that’s sons for you. Thanks for the video. It’s interesting and I’m glad you have endorsed my choice - it wasn’t an easy decision as I’d used PD for six years. It’s not for everyone, as you suggest, and I reckon that some experience with video editing software is a requirement. Derek

With the new release of Davinci Resolve 18 now it's the king. Resolve edit like Vegas Pro without the clunky IU. Vegas Pro problem not having a Mac version and the UI buttons and layout needs to follow what Davinci did. Large buttons and 7 panels are designed to work on that segment of the project. Now with Davinci UI and the editing speed of Vegas on a Mac. This is crazy.

Awesome content and the way you format it is great. Any recommendations for a video like this about image editing?
Hi Justin, I have a request, as you said the best video editing software for PC is Adobe Pr CC, that is, if you are some what of a professional. Have you seen the price of a second hand Pr CS5.5 or 6 for PC? My question is, how does Pr 5.5 or 6 stack up against DV and the other < $200 PC editing software? But you have to throw in a consideration of Ae, which may be the driving force behind the trend. Along with the disdain of renting and partiality to independence.
Two related questions… I am having my family home Super 8 movies digitized and plan to make several videos from the old footage interspersed with current footage and still photos. Have you ever done a video on editing old home movies? Instead of importing various clips into a video I am trying to make and save bunch of clips from the old movies for use in Then and Now videos. Do you have any tips? Of these editing softwares does one stand out that would be most conducive for this type of project? TIA

I edit since 4 years completely self taught, I started with Camtasia as an absolute beginner 4 years ago, I didnt even watch a tutorial, now im a professional editor with years of experience. I can recommend for Beginners: - Windows Movie Maker - Filmora - Camtasia for people that look for something professional, use one of the 6 I list: - Sony Vegas Pro - Davince Resolve - Adobe Premiere Pro - After Effects - Illustrator - Camtasia ( this is not in order) as you can see Camtasia is once again here, its because it is super super simple and useful for beginners and professionals, but if you want to make your videos on a hollywood level use one of everything in this list expect camtasia

I just popped by to see how you would review Davinci Resolve. I am satisfied because I completely agree with you. Thanks for the other good tips though.

Awesome, you're welcome! 👍
Thank you Justin. Just starting out with video- and my stuff will be very simple- so Openshot looks good for my purposes. Where would something like Descript fit in (I'll be doing podcasts with the same content/scripts)?

Justin I recently started recording my DJ sets from multiple cameras. What software would suit me best to match transitions between each recording to my live mix and create a video just like you see in any professional DJ set at the festivals??
Thanks for the tips on the best video editing software.

Justin, what kind of computer do you recommend for video editing as well as video recording? What's the most bang for our buck? A budget modified choice for those of us who want great videos on a budget?
