I have tested 13 of the best grow lights for a 4ft x 4ft or 1.2m x 1.2m grow tent and compare them for PAR output, efficiency and value for money.
Full blog post with DISCOUNT LINKS & PAR charts here: migrolight.com...
The 4ft x 4ft or 1.2m x 1.2m grow area is one of the most popular grow tent sizes and also a common modular size for commercial grow setups. There are a large number of grow lights on the market for 4 x 4 grow areas including a lot of commercial grade fixtures so there is a lot of competition and great value for money.
To maximise the potential yield from the space you need about 400 to 500 watts of high efficiency LED lighting to achieve an average of 700 to 800 µmols PAR intensity. Some fixtures are in the 800 watt range and designed to delivery very high average PAR intensity of about 1,200 µmols which would require CO2 supplementation to make use of the high light intensity.
Ideally the light fixture will be suitably sized to cover the area evenly i.e. the fixture is rectangular and close to the physical size of the grow tent. The PAR chart is shown below for each model so you can judge the best solution for your grow space.
Spectrum
All of the lights have a mixture of mid temperature white LEDs with 660nm reds to improve their electrical and photosynthetic efficiency. Therefore all of the grow lights tested are full spectrum and suitable for growing from seed to harvest.
Grow light comparison method
The comparison chart uses the results from Shanes PAR output and efficiency tests to calculate and compare the total cost of each fixture to deliver an average PAR of 750µmols/m²/second over 1m² grow area over a 3 year period. The 3 year costing includes the cost of the fixture and adds the electricity costs at 17c/KW hour over 14 hours per day average.

The Best value is a 400W or 600W HPS for flowering. LED's are only useful for vegging and clones. You know that's the truth too. You'll get twice the yield with HPS and they are cheaper to purchase. Yes HPS will use more power the LED.. But it's producing Double the Yield.

This guy makes comparison videos so interesting with the important information that we all are seeking. Seems like he does a pretty fair evaluation even while having his own light brand in the mix. I'll be looking at the Migro lights in the very near future when I upgrade.

Thanks again. Hobby growers on limited incomes are looking for ways to reduce electricity bills, which are set to double this year. You are the closest to being the Martin Lewis of indoor horticulture, and I hope you continue to address all electrical use involved . Winter is a big problem, stealth growers in the attic need to know how to maintain minimum temps that will produce, for minimum power use. 3 feet tube heaters (120 watt) x 2 may be enough for a winter harvest. Would be great if you could construct a winter set up and provide us with stats. No one is addressing this because the costs are passed along in most cases, but hobbyists can no longer afford heating. In summer, regular plants may be preferred to autoflowers due to 12 hours instead of 24 (20) , and maybe HPS (never used them) seems to deliver more radiant heat. You seem to have a nose for this stuff, and I am grateful. 450 watts is plenty for 4x4, (hobby)

John, I think the solution is two fold. Insulate your tent/grow space and run airflow with temperature/humidity control. Many growers run fan at too high speed which is not necessary IMO. I would sacrifice higher air flow for higher temps in winter.

It’s interesting. The more I expose myself to understanding the more that a pattern begins to emerge. The pattern, is that the more consistently we’re able to provide the light to the enclosed grow area, the better we’re able to mimic Mother Nature. While outdoors at high noon on the longest day of the year, we read about 2,000 PPFD from the sun. If we are able to give the plants the uniformity of the MIGRO ARRAY 8, for instance, we’ll have a better outcome than from a light source with 1200 in the center with 400 in the corners. Shane is brilliant for recognizing that.

Perfect timing Shane! I've noticed many, especially bar type fixtures, that have been coming out very quickly and priced extremely well. I love how even the canopy is with the fixtures that "require" CO2, but that's not in any immediate plans right now. Would these very even canopy spread fixtures, that put out these very high Umols all around very equally, be dimmed by 25-30% to get the extremely even canopy, but closer to the non CO2, around 1000 Umols, all around the canopy? Something I've been interested in knowing with these "too bright"(lol), unless using extra CO2. Would the canopy be perfect at a dimmed level? Thanks Shane. Your the best! 👍

Great work Shane as always. All of my fixtures except for one are yours. Your product nails the sweet spot every time. My only other brand fixture is the Chilled Tech Growcraft X600. I got greedy and wanted something with more ‘power’, so went this route for one 4x4. It’s too much for the space. It puts the whole tent/grow out of homeostasis by how much is pushes the limits. I wish I could preach to people how perfectly ‘balanced’ your light fixtures are. Truly genius engineering and the perfect blend of power/effectiveness/efficiency making for stress free runs. Will you be including Chilled Tech in more of your group/peer reviews? I rank Migro as #1 LED growlight manufacturer and Chilled Tech #2. Keep up the good work and thank you for everything you do for the industry.

Thanks for all this great info. I was wondering if a dimmed migro array 5x5 would run well in my 4x4. Definitely looks like it will fit. Just want a light i can use for many years and eventually in a larger grow space.

being thinking about it for a while, just not sure were best to spend my money, what ive seen most important is lights, so not sure what to go for here, thinking has to be led with dwc system, so is it worth spending the money on a good light firstly, then good extractor and filter, this my first time an a start up, any help pointers or hints would be great, the more i can find out from people in the know, the better as just dont wanna waste money on junk on amazon as it never is what they state, so just gathering as much info as i can before i splash the cash and give it a go

Love the video. I been following you for about 5 yrs. now I have a question when those lights are set with a set of blue and red . Growing cannabis during the flowering stage and wanting more trichome by adding more far reds. How are growers achievingthis if the light fixture is set to their the manufacturer. I use bulbs Like the ones you used building diy light fixture . The LEDs that I use has blue white and reds. Durring veg I use 2 different sets for large leafy plants mostly blue and white LEDs few reds 2nd set is for large plants and flowers. And when I'm in flowering I'll change the bulbs to flowering plants and I add more bulbs that's are more far reds. And my buds are frosty and good size. I did buy maxisun mf 1000. Spider farmer sf1000. My diy bulbs I have better results .

After takin a quick look through your vids, I only see the mas hydro fc-4800 (samsung diodes) featured here... would you possibly have any interest in comparing the MH fc-4800 (samsung) with the MH fc-e4800 (bridgelux) version? Either way, amazing channel you have here! tons of great info, I have a lot to watch now :)

Got a bargain with the Lumatek 465 pro, on sale and with a code it cost me just £450. it just about fits in a 1x1m area. I like that its wall to wall light. As for electric loool 17p more like 28p kwh in two days. 12/12 for 1 month £50 up from about £30 a month 18/6 for 1 month £71 up from about £50 😭
