My ASUS WIFI wireless card started to give me connection problems with the newer kernels. I ordered the TP-LINK TL-WN722N card you suggested on Monday from and received it on Thurs. morning. Removed the older ASUS card & Plug & Play with TP-LINK & it started to work immediately with LinuxMint 19.3. No more connection problems. I am an Arch fan going several years & about two years went to LinuxMint which is no hassle & works great for my needs. Your advice saved me since I do a lot of online research work and writing. I am happy. :)

Only ever had a REAL "non-working wifi" issue with a customer's laptop once. I just gave them a tiny usb adapter (TP-Link I think it was), and they were and still is happy with it. Other than that, the only thing that I've encountered not working out of the box, are Broadcom wireless adapters ...which work once the drivers in the repos are installed. Thanks for the info though. Never thought of updating to or compiling a newer kernel. Will file that info away in my head for if/when needed. :)

It was great hanging out with you last night on Twitch Chris. I still haven't tried that USB passthrough yet because I just got home from work LOL. This is one of the reasons I love Ubuntu, is because they have the ability to install proprietary drivers from the ppa repositories and usually can do so with a press of a button in the "software and updates" section of you operating system. So even if a driver is not available in the Kernel it is usually pretty easy to find a driver that will work (I ran into this in a macbook that I had converted to Linux for a friend). I also had to do this for a USB to SATA bridge as well. Even if it a driver isn't included in the kernel then I would still check with the manufacturer to see if there is a driver (if you get it from the manufacture there is a high probability that you will have to build from source, however some manufactures provide you with specific instructions on how to do this).

I've had some experience with an ASUS 802.11ac PCE-AC56 wireless card that needed a Broadcom driver. There are workarounds using terminal commands to install the driver for this particular card, no need to upgrade the Kernel and pray. However, I needed to plug in my good old TP-Link wireless adapter first to get the Broadcom driver installed from the terminal. After doing that I now have 5G and it's been working great.

Chris, What I want to know is if any of these cards have open-source Linux drivers. That's the only way that any wifi-adapter will work in Secure Boot Mode. If only proprietary drivers are available, you'll have to manually self-sign the dkms-compiled driver with *every* kernel-update before it will load. The only alternative to this would be to disable SBM, which is not recommended, obviously for security reasons.

Agreed the PAU05 can't let you down unless your gaming. Otherwise your better off going for a card solution for a good performance to price ratio. However I personally went with the Ethernet Over Power instead. For $70/pair+cables it's not too shaddy for a TRUE plug and play hook up. So that's great say for your main PC if you don't wanna bother with a card until say your next build.

WiFi didn't work so I plugged in an old Edimax USB Wireless adapter for the week and a half it took me to locate the linux drivers for the WiFi card on the web. Tried the top 5 distros on Distro Watch and end up with the same result with all of them. When I ran the Live version of each distro, WiFi was id'd and connected perfectly - when I do the permanent install from the same image - no WiFi id, no connection. This happened on every distro I tried - just gave up and staying with Windows for now Why can't the Live session WiFi behaviour not be copied into the permanent install ?

I have Broadcom wireless card and it works fine on my core2duo. Some distros don't include the driver or they install other drivers or it conflicts with the kernel. I've had some issues most were with the wrong drivers being installed by the distros out of the box. I've since learned what works and what does not. Some distros I need three drivers and others it's only 2. I still wouldn't choose windows over Linux. Windows has just been garbage since it was created. It always gets released before it is stable and then they update and cause more trouble than they fix it has been like this for over 30 years. Penguin power for life.

I also recently bought a Ourlink AC600 Nano USB adapter and it doesn't work at all and there's only instructions for getting drivers for it for Windows and Mac, nothing for Linux even though it says it'll work with Linux. Basically I wasted $13 bucks on it. On a similar note I use to see folks complain all the time about how their Broadcom cards weren't working and they'd ask advice on what to do. My very simple answer to them was to order a $5 intel card from EBay and install it and throw the Broadcom card in the trash, problem solved, LOL.

I've been lucky over the years, I just saw an update of 66 mb. ( linux-firmware (1.173.2) bionic) for such headaches as Broadcom. I remember years ago we installed the correct firmware by knowing the part number from the Windows install. Having a dual boot was a great advantage and most firmware was available but not on the Kernel because there was proprietary litigation you had to agree to. It would install over the internet just like it did on Windows. The companies were afraid of pirated hardware and thought they could control the pirates with limited software. Just like we copy software we can also copy hardware - buying the parts and soldering it together; A big fear for many companies. .... Oh how do I miss my PCI TV tuner!

Some WiFi issues are in the individual distributions. I have an Asus motherboard with built in Broadcom WiFi. Debian and Debian based distributions I have tested (Linux Mint, MX Linux, Zorin, Elementary and Ubuntu) all work well with it. Solus, however, completely freezes after login if I have a static IP set. Manjaro and Arch do not freeze, but I have to manually initiate the WiFi connection each time I log in if I am connecting to a hidden network using Network Manager. In Arch I stopped and disabled Network Manager and switched to Netctl, which works flawlessly. For some reason Netctl does not work with my WiFi in Manjaro - authentication fails. This is strange since Manjaro is an Arch based distribution.

Do a 'lspci' I get 'Broadcom BCM4360 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter (rev 03)" I have never had kernel support this as I think there are some proprietary issues. My kernel is 4.15. Find out what driver is needed, the Arch Wiki is great for this. The driver is either in the repository or download from the manufacturer and install. I am running Linux Mint 19, they make it easy, just install a proprietary driver. I can't remember which distros it is but some will load the driver on the live cd but will not install it during installation. Chris, I don't think you have to wait for support to come in the kernel.

Just tried to switch my old Toshiba laptop to Linux yesterday and spent 4h trying to understand how to make my wifi dongle (Netgear A6100) to work (because the antenna of my internal wifi is broken). Can’t say that it was a pleasant experience for a first time (and it still don’t work yet)

TP-LINK 722n USB v1(atheros) and v2 (Realtek 81xx ) working without firmware download in *buntu 18.04 and up, Arch,Suse,Fedora 28, . In Debian, Centos 7.6, Slackware 8 firmware download is required. UPDATE! If you have inserted it in 2.0+ USB port everything is ok. With USB 1.1 there many faults! read all my post! Minimum kernel 2.6.32. tested by myself ;) remember that 150mbit is whole max. Download is 75 and upload 75mbit max. That dongle have removable antenna ;) If have problems with firmware download, connect your Android phone by USB cable and enable USB tethering ;) that's work for me in many distros. I don't test it on iPhone. One more thing.. If you have old system, with only 1.1 (OHCI) USB 722n USB has issues (logs flood, dmesg errors flood, read/write 64 errors or can't connect fault) with kernel version higher than 3.20, proably that with normal pendrives too exist. This is bug with kernel OHCI and USB 2.0 sticks. On my old rig 4.xx and 5.xx kernel make journal/logs errors flood, high cpu usage etc. 3.20 working normal( firmware I tested from 0.64, 2016 and 2019 x2 versions). Few discussion can be found at devs BBS/mail list - search Google for details TP-LINK 722n v2 (Realtek 81xxx) works without problems on USB 1.1 OHCI.

I think is good to say that some distros dont distribute non free firmware. Or they put in a different package. packages.debian.org/source/stretch/firmware-nonfree Sometimes the Kernel module is there but the distro is too much free. xD I had problems with a friend with atheros module, non free firmware and uefi secureboot in Fedora. We finally disabled secureboot. Fedora forgot to sign the binary blob and the Kernel rejected to load that module downloaded from official repository.
