BEST UNDERRATED 80'S ACTION MOVIES - PART 1

Ойын-сауық

The eighties were full of incredible action movies, but while a lot of them are considered classics now, some of the best movies (you never saw) routinely get underrated, so here on JoBlo we're celebrating Veteran's Day with three of the best - BLACK RAIN (1989), STREETS OF FIRE (1984) and BLUE THUNDER (1983).
BLACK RAIN (1989) - In director Ridley Scott's neo noir masterpiece, Michael Douglas plays a rebellious cop extraditing a killer to Japan who gets wrapped up in the Yakuza underworld. Co-starring Andy Garcia, Kate Capshaw and Ken Takakura, with music by Hans Zimmer.
STREETS OF FIRE (1984) - Michael Pare, Diane Lane and Willem Dafoe star in Walter Hill's rock-n-roll fable.
BLUE THUNDER (1983) Roy Scheider, Warren Oates, and Malcolm McDowell star in this prescient techno-thriller directed by John Badham.

Get some Jo & shoot some blo. I've seen all 3 movies, but Black Rain & Blue Thunder are my personal favourites. I love the neo noir look of Osaka, Japan and it is one of Michael Douglas's underrated roles as corrupt NYC cop trying to seek redemption as he searches for the Japanese prisoner they lose in a prisoner exchange that leads to the death of his partner midway through. It was also the beginning of Hans Zimmer music career that would inform his future career. I still have the original Special Edition DVD. Blue Thunder on the other hand, has a really great final half with a fantastic battle over Los Angeles. These type of aerial battles you won't see these days and these amazing sequences for shot for real.

My mom would occasionally get me a random LP (yes, it was 1980's) from the local library, usually soundtracks for movies I didn't know anything about, and at one point she came home with the BLACK RAIN soundtrack. Put me in the "Absolutely Love" bucket for Streets of Fire. Been a fav of mine for 30+ years. I worked in a video store in high school, and it was a regular in my rotation. The soundtrack is on my playlist to this day. Listened to "Nowhere Fast" on the way to work today. Diane Lane was incomparable in that movie. She played the rockstar like, well, a rockstar. Dafoe was at his weirdest, too. Full on psycho villain. Looking back, try to come up with another actor who could pull that role off as well as he did.

Thank you for these. "Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young" is an amazing song and tragically unknown. Amy Madigan starred as an action star in her own right in 1987's dumb but fun Nowhere to Hide, ably assisted for a while by Michael ironside. Diane Lane is, yes, impossibly beautiful -- she marks the first time I ever felt "that way" about Superman's mom. I love Blue Thunder and I count it among the first video-game-based movies, as it feels so much like a game tie-in at the end. Black Rain is fun, though its title reminds of the weird motivations behind recent Bond villains: "I'm going to counterfeit American money as revenge for nuclear fallout." I've already bugged you about Shakedown with Peter Weller, Sam Elliott, and the enchanting Patricia Charbonneau. Thanks again.

Unlike the USA, Streets of Fire was a big hit in Japan. I was listening to podcast featuring Michael Pare, and he said that the cast got to meet the Emperor of Japan. There were two anime that were influenced by Streets of Fire: 1)Bubblegum Crisis: Priss' rendition of Konya wa Hurricane was influenced by Ellen Aim. 2) Megazone 23: the protagonist and his friends watch Streets of Fire in a theater. When they leave, you can see a big poster of Tom Cody and Ellen Aim.

Streets of Fire was a great movie. I saw it when I was a kid and LOVED IT. Doesn't hurt that it had Cherry, I mean, Diane Lane in it! But seriously, it's probably one of the most underrated movies of the 80's!

Thank you! I remember I saw a movie at the driven in when I was a kid with a flying motorcycle: Megaforce! I did not know the name of the movie and I think it was the first movie I ever saw outside of my home. Thanks for the info!!

Black Rain hit me hard in the theater back then. It was perfection. Zimmer & Scott nailed it. PS : The biker chief in SoF was not psychotic. He just gave a fuck on women´s rights.

Damn. Willem Dafoe looking like Rutger Hauer (in Bladerunner) there. How did I live through the 80s and not see this film yet the soundtrack is so very familiar? I guess I did spend an awful amount of time watching Rage (basically MTV for Australia).

If you haven't seen this movie I can't recommend any more. The music in it is incredible and still holds up today. Willem Dafoe is a crazy awesome badass and my one sided love affair with Diane Lane continues to this day. It is also really cool to see Rick Moranis doing a 100% dramatic role and who doesn't love Bill Paxton? Another time, Another place... One of the coolest openings of all time. I am a little biased but I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!

I love Black Rain, I'd love to see an extended cut from Ridley Scott. It irritates me when people say 'racism' and Black Rain in the same sentence, sadly Roger Ebert was one that did that. The few moments of racist/arrogant/dismissive behavior from Douglas's character are vital to his character arc, he completely changes by the end, that's the WHOLE POINT, his growth as a character. Baffling how Ebert didn't see that. The bulk of the film takes place in Osaka not Tokyo btw.

Sticking with the military theme, another underrated title from that era is "Fire Birds" (1990), starring Nicholas Cage and Tommy Lee Jones. It’s one of the few films I've seen that feature the Apache attack helicopter and which does a good job of properly representing their true capabilities. I certainly recommend it for anyone interested in them like I was. 😊

Black Rain and Blue Thunder are top.Top. Movies. From director to catering. And everybody else in between being on their A game. Little bit of trivia. Hans Zimmer score in Black Rain has been used in tons of trailers. Including a little known action flick called Speed. Check it out. And Aussie actor Bryan Brown was originally going to be the bad guy in Blue Thunder. But Columbia saw him as a hero type. And cast Malcolm McDowell late in the day.

It's weird... I saw "Streets of fire" on VHS back in the day and I had to rewind it immediatly to rewatch it. Then I critics were not to happy and few had seen it, those that had didn't want to talk about it. I felt really off the grid... so I was about 37 years before my time!

What you said about Andy Garcia’s character-type of the likeable-partner-who-always-dies is so true. I’d expand that to the likeable-better-looking-than-the-protagonist side character. Very popular in the 80s and 90s.

McDowell wasn't in the scene where the police helicopters are chasing Blue Thunder under the bridges. He was only in the scenes with the AH-6 Little Bird after Blue Thunder takes out the F-16. Their battle is mostly flying low around downtown L.A. buildings.
