Best Ultimate Frisbee Plays of 2008

Спорт

Same footage as the other 2008 highlight video I put together with new music, I think it looks better. New footage from Ultivillage, featuring UPA Club Nationals and WUGC, or Worlds, tournaments. Check it out and enjoy.

The Callahan, by John Chandler of Surly, was done in a man-to-man defense, not zone. But the stall count was starting to get high thanks to the excellent shut down D on the handlers. Frisbeejim, you're still fundamentally correct: great D creates big turnovers.

You make a good point. Unfortunately, when Ultimate gets to a competitive level, people forget about Spirit and only argue for their call. I would love to see Ultimate in the Olympics, even if Spirit is at cost. Rules and referees would be better for the sport, simply because most players nowadays cannot be trusted.

I can't believe people are trying to argue that this isnt' a sport or a competitive sport or isn't as competitive as any other sport. Maybe their video cards weren't working or they didn't scroll up, I mean, just watch these guys. Ultimate is not only about speed and raw leg strength, but agility and HUGE amounts of finesse. I don't even play and I'm not even that good with a disc but I know it takes a lot more than most people have to put the disc exactly where it needs to go.

@Happytaco1236 Happy, I'm 23 years old and I've played competitive sports for my entire life. I won numerous high school awards (including being voted best athlete in my class by my peers) and was a 3 sport varsity athlete (baseball, soccer, and basketball). I tried out for the Wake Forest University men's baseball team but they did not take me so I began playing Ultimate. That said, I can personally attest to the validity of Ultimate as a sport. You have yet to offer a sound argument...

@Necrosis123 if the defensive player deflects the frisbee pass and it hits the ground before either side can catch it, the defense gets it. Basically, if the offense(A) doesn't successfully pass the disc, it goes to the defense(B). The benefit of an interception instead of an deflection and recover is B gets extra time before A gets themselves back to defend and there is also no chance for A team to catch it.

@Happytaco1236 A sport is defined as "an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc." which is exactly what ultimate is. Soccer requires less running, as when you play at a competitive level at disc you are required to run through a whole tournament (lasting from 6-10 hours), not just one game. The same thing goes for track and cross country.

@0r1ginalgb You also play tournaments in soccer. With at least 3 games in one day, and about 9 games over the span of a weekend. Which amounts to about 12 hours of running and athletic competition. In frisbee's case, your do not run through a whole tournament, based on the fact that you are required by the rules to stop when you have the frisbee.

Playing frisbee is fucking fun in gym class when people are actually trying and interested. Hate it when people try to act cool by not trying and thinking that people take it too seriously if they actually want to win, good thing that shit's only in middle school and the lower classes in high school.

I actively play high level ultimate and soccer and I say ultimate involves more running than soccer, however there are more subsitutions so you are not playing the whole time, but when you are you need to be running hard the whole time, whereas soccer you run when the ball is in your position. Soccer takes more coordination and "Skill" but ultimate takes more intense physical exertion. It is also a million times as much of a sport as curling, golf, luge etc.

Honestly all of those who criticize ultimate as a sport have no clue in what they are talking about. Yes it is defintely true that NBA basketball players are some of the best athletes in the world, but as a person who has played both in his life i would say there is a lot more conditioning in ultimate then people could imagine. It is a constant fast pace game very much like soccer, and to be a good ultiamte player you must be peak in your athletism, so for all of you that think ultimate looks

@77Chengz Bob's daughter had bruises on the right side of her face. Atticus asks Bob to write his name. Bob writes his name. With his LEFT hand. It is much more likely that a left handed person would inflict wounds on the right side of a girls face (or anybody's face, for that matter). This goes against Tom. Who's left hand was badly scarred and ripped up after an accident with a cotten gin. Bob was cross examined. So anything he says about Tom beating his daughter means "nothing."

@exeterdisc You're right, i've never played competitive frisbee. But, in my defense (kind of), i was in marching band all 4 years of high school (yeah, laugh it up. It helps with college). The kids in the band played ultimate frisbee everyday and from what i saw, it was not a sport (though they obviously weren't the most athletic people i knew). From those experiences in marching band. I developed my opinion about ultimate frisbee and i will stick to it unless you viamently prove otherwise.

It needs to be popular in multiple countries at a high level. I'm not say Major League Ultimate or anything, but a sport at many colleges and in many countries. I'd say US could make it a summer sport at their next olympics at just have the other countries put together teams (like curling in Vancouver), but they would probably chose lacrosse.

@Happytaco1236 Hi. I'm currently a junior and the co-captain of a Division 1 track team. I've played soccer, basketball, was a 2 year starter at corner-back, and captain of my track team in high school. A sport demands athletic ability and a scoring system. Ultimate has both. Ultimate is very athletically demanding. A good player must be very fast, agile, able to accelerate, able to jump high, and have the ability to read the flight pattern of the disc and also the skills to throw. SHUT ME DOWN!

You didn't resort to blind insults and comments so i didn't. I'm usually not one to start that. I respect your opinion and the fact you didn't force it on me like the kids who constantly keep watch over the comments page and wait for someone to pounce on. So thank you also.

Basketball is more competitive and the players are better at their sport. Pro basketball players devote their entire lives too basketball, coached by people who spend their entire lives analysing the game. Pro ultimate players can't because they dont get very muchh (if any) money for playing preofessionally. They need to have jobs an go to school etc. I play ultimate myself and I have faith that it will expand, hopefully to the olympics. Great video.

@exeterdisc First of all, no. I haven't played ultimate frisbee except for when i was forced to in Phisical Education in High School. Plus, there's spirit in every sport out there, and they all have officiating crews. And does spirit of the game win games or competitions, no. Talent and strategy wins competitions (or cheating in baseball's case.) So in the end, spirit of the game doesn't matter as much as getting the right call (as opposed to biased calls) and being good at what you do.

Though about the rest i would say yes, ultimate is a lot harder then most people say. (I play in school as well as leagues)
