Best Tent? One year later - follow-up review

A year after the original review, and we relook at the ripstop canvas tent now that we've tested it in various conditions. Check out the camping gear review. Is it still the best tent upgrade? Watch the video to find out.
We purchased our Junior Safari Bow ripstop canvas tent from TentCo (www.tentco.co.za/).

    You don't mention whether u needed a groundsheet for this tent

  • @TravelGigolo

    @TravelGigolo

    Жыл бұрын

    Good point! Hadn't thought of that. We don't generally need a ground sheet because the tent floor is made of tough material. We do often use a ground sheet though to keep the tent floor clean underneath for when we pack it away. Also our ground sheet is nice and long to act as a porch as well. We initially bought our ground sheet because it's a mesh and is supposed to be less damaging to lawn and grass.

    @@TravelGigolo You shouldn't have the groundsheet extend beyond the floor of the tent because of water from rain will go right under your tent...

    Our groundsheet is a mesh one. We run it beyond the tent as a stoep to prevent carrying sand into the tent with our feet, and as an easy place to take off and put on shoes. We occasionally use it as a seating area too, depending on the position of the sun.

    Got me a Campmore Timbavati for 700 bucks second hand, used once. Me, im a solo camper, 1.8m tall iits more than adequate even though the height of the tent is 1.5. I prefer the D door, that zips across the bottom of the door, no slithery things can get in in my absence.... Or stingy / bitey / things for that matter. The fly is a different design and goes all the way to the ground all round. And has no front waning, which in my opinion is pretty useless as a provider of shade. So her is a tip..... 1.4 x verticle height.... thats the distance from yhe pole that will create a 45 deg with the ground plane. Now 45 deg is quite important, as it distributes the tension force of the guy rope equally between down force and stretch force... so make a chord guage... mark where the pole is when verticle tap a nail in there, run you chord ot at 45 deg, slam dunk uour peg in there attach guy hook onto pole pull slightly, same other side and tension.... See ! Im a solo camper. Know the tricks....😅 15:58

    Sounds good, will give it a go. I'll measure the length of the ropes first. They may already be exactly 1.4x the pole height 🤔

    @@TravelGigolo HI ! Actually, the length of a guy should be 1.4 x verticle height + 600 - 700mm this will let you get hold of both the pole in one hand, and the slider in the other, then use your body strength to create proper tension. Cost cutting at the manufacturer. Once you peg at 45 deg the bloody slider's down at the peg, and you can't reach it, so you pull up on the slider, but this never leaves you with enough tension on the guy..... Not enough tension, high wind, canvas lifts, pole lifts, pole swings inwards at the bottom = catastrophe..... Pegging & guy ropes is not just as simple as one may believe.... I've made a study of it, and believe me you could do at least 3 video sessions.... The anatomy of a dog-leg bent peg,, the reasons why it's made like it is, the mechanical differences between a straight & bent peg, pegging techniques, and guy ropes, and how to deploy them.....next time you up jhb / alberton side look me up, I'll be happy to give you all the Gen....... RGDS Warren BTW, I made tent pegs at one time...

    I have a Senior Wanderer, probably the best tebt you can buy. Not just a tent, if you look after it, a incredible asset. I bought mine for R3500 about 5-6 years ago, it is still in as-new condition since I look after it, I can probably sell it now for R4500 and anyone will buy it since they go for around R5500 now. So anytime is a good time to buy these, they are great and keep their value. Senior wanderer is a great tent to start with since when you are single and get a family one day you can buy a second one and add the attachment, gives you 3 compartments with a overhang. I can not stress enough how great these tents are.

    I use the slightly larger Tentco Senior Wander. After a month and a half trip to Kunene river (Northern. Nam) in 2018 & a two month trip to Kenya this year I have found no faults. Pitching and packing times are around 15 min ( by myself). Times are longer if I use the Tentco gazebo and custom “link” (for longer stays). Your small niggles can be easily solved by a tent maker ( maybe ever Tentco themselves).

    @@TravelGigolo So we have got our 3x3 model. But now the big question is TENT PEGS!!!! I have had many frustrating times with the standard thin ones, but what do i need now. I am entering a new environment of camping (from England) so what is appropriate in the desert and elswehere? MSR ones?????

  • @TravelGigolo

    @TravelGigolo

    3 жыл бұрын

    I haven't used MSR pegs but from what I've seen online they're very popular. The default pegs that came with my TentCo tent have been good in all the conditions we've camped. One exception may be where the ground is really soft (e.g. soft lawn). In general they are quite sturdy, they have not bent (weak pegs that bend when hammered into hard ground are a pet irritation for me). They're offset at the hook so when you hammer them the impact is in line with the axis of the peg shaft. Unless you're camping on unconsolidated sand with high wind (e.g. beach or dunes) then the TentCo pegs are good. You could consider anchor pegs as well. The tension is at right angles to the shaft in the ground, so that gives you quite a lot more resistance. Link- tentco.co.za/index.php/quick-links/products/accessories/tent-accessories/anchor-peg-large-5-pack-detail Hope that's helpful.

    One person can pitch up a dome tent with ease by using a LK's umbrella stand that is pegged into the ground at the corner of the tent. When one corner of a tent stay is inserted into the umbrella stand it does not come out and then you can insert the opposite side of the stay into the tent before coming back to insert the stay that is still in the umbrella stand into the tent corner. Repeat for the other corners. I worked out that a beach umbrella at R450 and a LK's umbrella stand at R165 is an excellent low-cost alternative to a gazebo or awning to shield you from the sun or rain while you are tending the campfire or grilling meat on the fire.

    Can you add side walls to the awning? You have covers both sides of the windows, are the inside covers waterproof? Meaning, can you live the outside cover up if the inside cover is closed without leaking when it is raining? The mesh color is dark green or black? Thanks!

  • @TravelGigolo

    @TravelGigolo

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi there. 1. Awning sidewalls: No sidewalls available and no where to attach them on the awning. 2. Window covers: The inside covers are waterproof but the zips are not. So you can have some water dribbling down the zips if the rain is at an angle. When it rains we generally have the outside covers open and secured to the ground as per design with the inside flaps partially open, without any significant leakage. The top hatch though leaks along the zips if the awning is not on when it's raining. So it is necessary to have awning on when it rains. 3. Mesh colour: It's dark green.
