Thank you for this video! I am an American and thinking about the Maximo Nivel school in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica. I am a native English speaker with a BA and no teaching experience. it is about $1600 at this point, not including airfare and apartment rental for a 4-week course. If I round up to about $5000, just to have a buffer, it seems like a good deal for the whole experience. Living somewhere different, meeting some new people and experiencing something different, after the last couple years, may be nice.

If you are only teaching online, then you don’t typically need to invest in an expensive course. However, a quality course will give you strategies and resources to improve your teaching. I recommend The TEFL Academy Level 3 course if you want to teach online. They have an entire module on online teaching and the course is worth it in my opinion. Free courses are usually just articles you read and quizzes.

Hi Jamie, First of all, thank you so much for this useful video! I am from the Netherlands, and have obtained a Bachelor and Master's degree in Translation (English, French & Dutch). I have traveled around the US, NZ, and AUS after that so proving my C1 level of English wouldn't be a problem. But since English remains my second language and since I don't have any teaching experience whatsoever, I am definitely willing to pass/in need of passing one of these 'expensive' TEFL courses. I still haven't decided yet whether I want to teacher EFL in Australia, Canada or the UK, so I want my TEFL degree as international as possible. I'm just wondering, with my background, should I go for the CELTA course or choose for another TEFL course? Thank you so much in advance for your time! Daisy

I know jet does not require a certificate or experience in teaching but it is recommended. I would be so grateful if you could give me some insight, I am hoping to get a certification before I apply for jet in fall 2025 while also going to full time university (so I need a more flexible certification process if possible if you know of one).

So I have been training students for IELTS for the past 4 years. As a change of mind, I’m looking for a english course and ended up watching your vedio and it was worthy. Can you suggest whther TESOL OR TESL is best for teaching in English speaking countries??

Hi! TEFL/TESOL/TESL are all the same thing. Different countries use different acronyms. I am currently teaching in Australia using my CELTA certificate. This is the Cambridge brand TEFL certificate. Each country has different regulations to get a visa to teach there so I recommend choosing your top 5 countries and researching the requirements. Jobs can be competitive in English speaking countries so it’s helpful to have an actual teaching certificate as well as a TEFL. I hope this helps!

Would you recommend a 120 hour tefl course or a celta? I was really leaning towards the celta, but the price point is what has me hesitant. The difference is that CELTA is more for teaching adults and ITA offers lifetime job search assistance but CELTA does not. I recommend starting with ITA and if you feel like you want more later on, you can always do a CELTA.

Teaching in Italy can be tricky unless you have EU working rights. The easiest way to get around this is to go on a student visa and teach English part-time on the side. With a US teaching license you may be able to find a job at an international school in Italy teaching in your subject area. You can apply for these jobs through recruitment agencies like Search Associates or International School Services. However, these schools may have age restrictions due to the visa.

    Level 3. It’s not a CELTA equivalent.

CELTA is more equivalent to a bachelor’s than a master’s. DELTA is the master’s equivalent. It really depends on where you want to teach. Which countries are you interested in? For non-native speakers it’s always best to be as qualified as you can since some countries, schools and employers prefer native speakers (which is unfortunate and discrimination 😔)

He has BA in Hospitality and Tourism Master in Human Resources and PGCE in Business We are planing to perhaps live in my country in the future ( Croatia) and wonder if he can make a bit of extra money online even if he will be over 50 Please be honest ha ha Regards from us from Dubai ♥️

Yes, it’s possible. However, if he teaches business and econ, it would be best to start his own freelance online teaching business to teach business English since most companies pay poorly these days.

ITA is rated higher on Go Overseas. You can check out reviews of TEFL certificates there. I have spoken with staff at ITA and they are wonderful.

Yes, CELTA is one of the most expensive courses. However, they don't offer job search assistance. So I personally recommend ITA over CELTA if you are looking for job search help.

If you want to teach online ONLY, it's ok. If you want to teach abroad, absolutely not.
