Best Sunglasses For Fishing (Plus Which Sunglasses To Avoid)

Ойын-сауық

Not all sunglasses are created equal…
Some are polarized (which is a necessity for fishing!), some are not.
Some are glass, some are plastic.
Some are made for inshore fishing, some are made for offshore fishing.
The point is, there’s a lot that goes into choosing the right pair of sunglasses for you.
And if you don’t have the right pair specifically for you, you could:
- Lose them (for example, Wyatt’s didn’t fit right and they fell off of his face into the water)
- Miss fish that the right pair could help you see
- Cause permanent damage to your eyes because you didn’t protect them correctly.
In this podcast, I’ve got Salt Strong fishing coaches Wyatt and Mark joining me to talk all about getting the right pair of sunglasses and why it’s so important.
We’ll cover:
- Glass vs. polycarbon vs. plastic lenses
- How to choose glasses that fit
- The top mistakes anglers make when choosing sunglasses
- The best color lenses for different types of fishing (yes, this actually makes a big difference!)
- Our favorite (and least favorite) brands
- And much more
Have any questions about getting the right pair of sunglasses?
What are your favorite shades?
Let us know down in the comments!

So I’m an optometrist for 30 years I know a fair amount about some stuff I’m not clear on 100% of everything But let me add a few comments to this excellent podcast / video. In no particular order: I don’t recommend plastic lenses as they don’t provide any protection against Impact and they can warp very easily in the heat of your car. Poly carbonate is impact resistant and does provide protection against things hitting you in the eye such as a weight or a bug at high-speed running in your boat. Glass lenses are scratch resistant. But not scratch proof. They are heat tempered to avoid shattering so that’s a great option but weight is a bit of a factor. Polarization Blocks horizontal surface glare. So this should be considered Example :if you’re in a kayak and you’re only 2-3 feet above the water and looking across the surface of the water you will primarily be seeing the surface of the water. Versus standing on a casting deck now you’re 6-8 feet above the waterline. You can see into the water versus looking across the water. This is also where color preferences come in to play. i.e are you looking down into the water column or across the surface in a low position. Mirroring is generally sold because it looks really cool. But it actually reduces the amount of light transmitting through the lens. The more mirroring - the more light is reflected away and the darker your view is. So it’s great in a full sun situation but a mirrored lens is not great in low light situations and as you get older your eyes naturally need more light Lastly, from having sold thousands of pairs of sunglasses. The original costa manufacturer out of Daytona was awesome. But they’ve been sold multiple times , most recently to LuxotticaLuxottica as mentioned in this podcast who also owns costa and lenscrafters and ray ban..... It’s yet to be seen their commitment to lens quality. They definitely have the design features down to make them look nice though. It has been my personal experience and my patients experience that Maui Jim and Smith are the tops in customer service (. FYI Maui Jim is based in Illinois not Hawaii LOL. ) I’ll stop here otherwise this will be as long as the podcast

Where you said you want more light to see in the water, that's why i prefer the greens. They seem to block the least amount of light while still being polarized, and the green is subtle enough as to not color distort whatever i'm looking at. The Maui Jim in HT green also has the least amount of mirroring, or at least my pairs do, which fits in with your ideas, and of course RB's G-15's have no mirroring. I recently tried out the Transitions Drivewear for fishing...pretty amazing. I wasn't sure how that would go and i was expecting real polarized sunglasses to considerably outperform them, but that didn't happen. After these, i got the other transitions pseudo polarised lenses called "Vantage" maybe, i forget? They are pseudo, alright. They don't even consistently eliminate wet road and puddle glare, but whatever. They do go clear and they do somewhat work. I will not get these again, but i would have no problem getting the Drivewears again.

re: [luxottica's] commitment to lens quality. It seems to me that luxottica is eliminating glass as an option from most if not all RB models so that's one telling sign right there.

Not all plastics warp or discolor in the sun. The manufacturer should know which plastic to use. If they didn't do a good job to check which plastic is right for the job, or if they threw in some random leftovers, that effects the overall quality of the plastic. Your dashboard, after all, has a lot of plastic that doesn't warp or discolor. Plastic is great for lightweight fishing glasses because they float if you drop them. They're also light, less stress on your face and won't fall off as easy.

@@phillip557 Again I’ve been with the industry for 30 years I’ve seen a ton of these personally go through my clinics. So, I didn’t say all plastics warp manufactures may know but they don’t care. Or do not realize that a pair of sunglasses in a car in a dashboard in Florida will exceed temperatures well over 100°Often the cheap sunglasses are made in China and the primary focus is price versus high-quality. Plastic lids do not float. They are light but they don’t float. If a pair of glasses floats it may be more factor of the frame that is made out of

The purpose of a mirror is to reduce the amount of heat that impacts the surface of your eye. The Mirror does not change your optics by a significant amount. Amber/copper base color lenses increase color contrast the best (shallow water sight fishing use). Gray based lenses are best for cutting glare the best on deep blue water or interstate driving. I am an Optician(20 + years). Great content guys keep it up.

Maui Jim Frigate are the best glasses I have ever worn for fishing. These are ridiculously expensive, but are the most comfortable glasses I’ve ever worn, you truly forget that you have them on your face! Much less expensive, but nearly as good: Maui Jim Hookipa, or Breakwall (plastic temples vs. titanium wire). As far as a fashion statement, all three of these choices ain’t all that, but trust me they are crazy light, and comfortable. I love Costas , and Oakleys for casual wear , so yea I don’t work for Maui Jim, just my experienced opinion. I, like y’all have a sunglasses “problem “, but buying sunglasses is cheaper than therapy, right.

And, Yes, Mark is absolutely right, the term "Prescription Bi-focal" pushes the regular $250 price to well over $650 (OUCH !!!). My poor eyes had Cataract Lens Replacements 30yrs ago, and unfortunately, also had to have Retina Reattachment on both eyes about 15yrs ago. So, I have super high quality "Transitions" Prescription Trifocals for everyday glasses, and have been using the copper-based Serengetti Driver based Prescription Bi-focal sunglasses for flats fishing. After doing lots of research, and trying on 100's of pair of sunglasses, I recently ordered a pair of Costa's 580G, Prescription Bi-focal copper/amber base with Green Mirror lenses. Unfortunately after waiting a month for the lenses to arrive at TSO, I discovered Costa's lenses are NOT "lined" bifocals, they have a wide, arch-shaped area around the small Bi-focal area that area is like looking into a "carnival side-show warped mirror" effect, a VERY, VERY WEIRD VISUAL EFFECT ! NOT HAPPY !!! Don"t know how they will work out for jumping up/down, to/from casting deck, poling platforms, docks to boat, we'll see, ?

It was the Hamiln and for the past three years I've found that they are the only glasses that don't fatigue my eyes after being water and fishing for 10 or 12 hours. Unfortunately, I don't think Costa is making the Hamlin anymore. I would be more than happy to buy yours if you email or PM me.

I have had Costa’s for years here fishing inshore in the Carolinas and I have never had a problem with my older ones. I bought the same frame style (Fantail) but in tortoise shell with the green mirror 580G lenses about a year ago and with minimal wear since I have 4 pair of them I rotate in and out the left side of the frame cracked while putting them on one day. But I will say Costa’s customer service was great I had a replacement set back in under 7 days but I feel like the newer Costa’s are the same quality as the 6-10 year old ones.

I quit Rx from a major brand that i won't name, but Wowie, Tim, I was so disappointed in how they don't cover their Rx when it's clearly a manuf problem. I have several Rx pairs that have severe spiderweb cracking in the top coating. In a bind, they can be worn, but there is obvious blurriness. They said too bad. Now, their non Rx plano lens glasses have much better coverage. I've had lenses break (snap) at the fastening points, I dropped a glass pair and shattered lenses and they were replaced for $60. I had a flex-on titanium alloy frame where the arm weld broke and they were also replaced with a new pair. MJ also sends out replacement nosepads free of charge. I recently ordered about 20 pairs to refresh them a bit...(now they might be able to finger me. hehe) I like their glasses a lot, but I will not get anymore Rx from them (last pair was ~$700). I have plano MJ's that are easily 15 yrs old and they look brand new, in unmarked condition. The problem is, Tim's Rx lenses are made in a different place and to a much lower standard of quality. They will no doubt deny this, but i've gone through too many of their Rx lenses that didn't last. Meanwhile, i have dozens pairs of MJ alone (between 3-4 dozen now) and even the oldest pairs are good not counting my own damage. Their Rx lenses however self destruct over time. I have raybans and serengeti's that are twice as old with original glass lenses in PERFECT condition. So I will continue to get off the rack glasses from Wowie Tim, but not Rx. My latest was the Peahi manchester united edition. btw, my favorite color on the water also green which i think 2 people mentioned in this vid. I like rayban's G15, Revo has a photochromic that goes from yellow to green'ish, Maui Jim has their "HT" green... Hobie..i only have 1 pair. About 3 years ago, I sent them photos of the spiderweb cracking on both lenses, which is the same problem the Rx wowie tim's have, and hobie sent me a new pair with case in box, no questions, no fees, and didn't want the defective pair sent in. I have a problem with collecting sunglasses...

Been using smiths a long time now. My first pair had interchangable lens with green being my favorite. I leaned over the boat one day and plung into the muddy water gone! So then i had 3 sets of lens and a case with no glasses lol. Live and learn lol. But years ago i just used renegade or terminator, strike king, spiderwire, etc. The renegade and terminators came with a 1.1mm lens and you could see pretty well with those but the exterior mirror coating would come off and would have to chuck them. Could find pretty good fit though. I normally used amber or grey depending on sunny or cloudy. But yeah smith has my vote! Coasta del mar right there though. Good review guys! P.S you have way too many pairs of sunglasses lol kidding! Fish on!!

Good video and information - albeit a bit long winded. I hung in there nevertheless. You should have discussed a bit about those of us that wear glasses and need prescription bifocal lenses. That doubles the price. I have sunglasses that cost $600, but I had no choice. I looked at Mauis and Costas. Smith was not yet being offered in the optical stores (the big retailers don't handle prescriptions). I would have liked more assessment of Maui Jims, which I have and like and thought to be one of the best quality - at least as good as Costas. When you need bifocal lenses in your sunglasses, the choices narrow down if you want quality. Also, I would have liked you to give an idea of the weight of sunglasses with glass lenses and different frame materials to compare among brands. Anyway, this was a good video, and you might consider amending the discussion to address prescription needs as well.

any of the major brands will make Rx lenses for you in their own factory lense options. Personally i have several pairs of Rx MJ's but I will not get another pair of them, they do not stand behind them. I mentioned this in another YT channel, the Rx MJ's are definitely NOT made in the same factory as the plano lenses (non-Rx). They cost a pretty penny too, my first pair was $450 ages ago when plano's were $150-250. My last pair of Rx MJ was around $700 and these are low'ish power, single vision.

I also got caught thinking that a good pair of quality polarised sunglasses would do the job and let me see more clearly whats happening under water. I've gone with the standard recommendation of Amber glasses lightly mirrored to reduce glare (they are from Wiley X and have pretty good Reputation). However I find that even though they have their sweet spot in most of the situations they are on par with the human eye (at least my eyes 😅). Especially with the sun standing low (which is pretty much anytime during winter) the reflection of the sun in the glasses itself reduce the visability to a point at which you can clearly see more without the sunglasses. As a summary of my impressions: no matter the price of your polarized fishing glasses the all have limits and mostly perform best with the sun standing either high or coming from the side/back.

So some of us half blind old people need bifocals for tying knots and such, and don’t want to have to carry two pair of glasses and trying to get really good sun glasses with bifocals is as hard as catching a 200 pound poon , so having to go to a glass store and then have to get custom glasses is like way expensive, and then you have to use a lanyard or fear risk of losing them , you usually don’t get multiple choice on colors on lenses , being an avid fly fisherman and doing a lot of site fishing the proper glasses are a must , interesting vid 👍

I purchased the Oakley Split Shot in the same lens color as the ones you show. Fit is ok. Side coverage is adequate. The Prism is not the degrees, but the filters used to cancel out certain spectrums of light which then enhances the others....BUT...(that's a big but)...those lenses introduce a magnification distortion that may cause people to have to take them off to tie knots or search the horizon...this is not good for fishing, but ok for everyday casual wear. #Truth

I don't want to sound like a butthead, but forget glasses that do that. If you want a proper fit, you don't want that to happen because you're bending the frames. This will flex the lenses too which will distort the optics. The proper way get this is to buy GOOD frames that have spring hinges and/or titanium frames or soft nylon frames that naturally flex. Most GOOD brands glasses hit a price point where they have spring hinges...trust me.

Sunglasses lenses do have an expiry date from exposure to UV for instance if you wear your sunglasses everyday you should replace your Lens every year or 2 have them tested at the optometrist to be safe to make sure you are still protected from UV exposure

Just like with Costa I feel the quality of MJ has gone down, for the time being, it looks like the lenses of both brands are as good as ever but the frames are starting to feel downright cheap. And MJ doesn’t even give you an actual case anymore just some cardboard triangular thing that folds. Seriously. At $250? I looked at the Local Kine model recently and it just plain felt cheap. Same with the newer post Luxotica Costa frames. I reckon this is the new normal. Cheers

for wrap in Rx, i highly recommend MJ. For the longest time, and maybe still are, the only company that could grind high base curve (wrap) sunglasses in Rx with the proper corrections around the sides. They are expensive, and i do have other issues with MJ, that i don't know i'll expand on in another post after i watch this video.

As a licensed optician, I completely disagree with spring hinges. They are terrible for most people. As long as you can get the frame to fit you and even if that means going into your local optician to adjust the frames properly for fitment, so be it, but get a frame with no spring hinges as it's typically the very first thing on a frame that breaks.
