    I wouldn't get too hung up on brands because they're going to limit the options in their rx programs a lot. Oakley being one of the few with a pretty wide catalog of rx color choices. Vuarnet being another. And one I would really consider for you is serengetti, as they've always focused on driving lenses. Personally I like a high contrast lens on a motorcycle or on the road vs something more color neutral. A brown with blue mirror is going to cause some color shift, but one of my favorite on the road combos, with brown and purple being a step better for late evening and harsh sun angles 😁

I saw your comment recommending a gray base and blue/purple tint, but the sites I'm shopping from (zenni optical and eyebuydirect lol don't judge me) don't let you pick a base and a mirror color - just a mirror color. In that case would a blue or purple mirror color still be the best choice for driving? Also, I was planning on getting polarized lenses but I'm not sure if it's overkill/redundant to have the polarization and the mirror coating... hey! Stick to the greens and avoid anything with red undertones. It'll make it easier to spot for you :) A good off the shelf option for this would be the Revo Evergreen lenses (variable darkening so you can still use it on a cloudy day to help with the diffuse blue light as well) It's a warm brown with a green mirror so won't abstruct much of the red spectrum. If you don't like a warmer lens a green base will be your next best bet, just avoid any of the red/orange mirrors, as they could make the laser reflection harder to spot blocking a portion of the red passing through the lens :) Hope that helps! (Would highly recommend the Revo Air 1 for you specifically, light, nice wrap, great color lens options for your needs)

    This set was entirely custom, and unfortunately matching it is no simple task. Balancing the reflectance to not have a constant tint, still activate and achieve a true mirror when activated takes some finesse that honestly most labs aren't even capable of or won't be dealing with. This requires a great understanding of light principles as well as a strong connection with the lab producing it. It's not as simple as a cake recipe (which if we're talking total scratch made is still no small task and takes time to master :) ).

    Hello, so I am interested in making my own sunglasses; because I can’t seem to find any that I like. Oakley use to offer a lens called “Torch and Iridium”, which I am completely in love with! Ultimately, I would like to have those lenses in a set of frames I currently have. It has come to my attention recently that I may have to buy the lenses pre-formed, shape them, and put them in the frames myself, which I am trying to avoid at all costs. Unfortunately, I don’t trust myself that much. I have called Opticians in my area and nobody seems to fit lenses for frames...? Do you know of a better way I could be approaching this situation? Your feedback is greatly appreciated, thank you!

    I know that bronze and gold mirrors are typically placed on contrast lenses like brown, but have you ever seen them placed on a grey base lens? I recently purchased a set of replacement sunglass lenses with a bronze mirror. The description didn't say anything about the base lens but they were described as having an "optimal neutral lens view," which would suggest a grey base lens. I didn't know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised to find that the base lens is in fact grey. The lens view is a neutral grey with just a very subtle boost in contrast due to the mirror color.

  • @ThatGlassesGuy03

    @ThatGlassesGuy03

    2 жыл бұрын

    I actually do these pretty often for people that want a neutral view but a different look cosmetically. Overall the bronze mirrors will normally add a slight cooling affect to the lens that isn't always desirable. (Will make a gray more blue). It takes a little tweaking to the base lens to really nail it 😁

  • @jeffu.8053

    @@ThatGlassesGuy03 That's interesting to know because whenever I see a bronze mirror I always assume it is on a contrast lens. My lenses do have a cool shift but it is definitely more subtle than what you would get with something like a red mirror on a grey base lens.

  • @svenlavine4959
    @svenlavine49593 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the vid. I had to re-watch parts of it just to digest all the info. Through the lens, I have noticed a shift in color from the middle to perimeter. With Green mirrored gray, the view is a little cooler in the center and warmer towards the edge. Red mirrored blue/gray is warmer in the center and shifts cooler to the edge. What’s going on here? Does the AR coating have anything to do with that? Also, what is the significance of the AR color? It seems it is usually matching the front mirror color.

  • @ThatGlassesGuy03

    @ThatGlassesGuy03

    3 жыл бұрын

    The backside ar color has almost no affect on visuals, and comes down to the cure time of the coatings, sometimes these will be run in the same batch and more closely match the front, sometimes they arent and even have no pigment at all only causing a reduction in reflections (my favorite, but good grief never request it because you'll never get it back right 🤣). For the color shift you're seeing, you do indeed have a keen eye! The mirror colors are typically not uniform and will shift as you get to the outside edge, just ever so slightly shifting the spectrum of light passing through. Greens will typically shift blue centrally causing the warmer shift like i mention in my own personal pair 😁. What your seeing in the red mirrored is the opposite of what it should be though UNLESS they're using a mirror that is more purple centrally like our custom pyro mirror here, those absolutely have that affect and its wierd but incredibly calming to the eyes. The ar color is just a largely cosmetic choice, i lean blue because, as I've mentioned before, things in the blue spectrum aren't as easily perceived by our eyes, and thus it appears to our brains the reflections are reduced that much further. (Now you know the magic behind the difference from crizal avance to sapphire 🤣) for the super acute it can be picked up on, its a difference of 0.01% in actual reflectance... so perhaps "almost entirely" cosmetic rather than just cosmetic should be used here 😁

    The mirror or the mirror flash coating is a multilayer dielectric coating. The color reflected/transmitted, & the amount of reflection, is a function of the thicknesses of the multiple layers in the coating stack. When light passes through at different angles, the color reflected changes because of the different distances for oblique rays (this is both advantage & disadvantage of multilayer coatings, depending upon whether or not you want this effect). When lens is held in front of the camera, most of the light is going through perpendicular. When it is worn, the light reaching the eye is going through at different angles. The coating thicknesses are configured to compensate for the angles of the light to the eye, not the camera.

  • @bpark10001

    @bpark10001

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@ThatGlassesGuy03 Comment about the mirror/anti-reflection coatings: They are all super-thin clear substances. There are no "pigments". The color is solely due to the thicknesses of the layers in the coating causing light-wave interference. Different colors have different wavelengths. The color of the transmitted light is always the complement of the reflected light. Very little energy is lost in the coating. What isn't reflected is transmitted. When you change the angle, the oblique light rays travel different distances in the layer than if it were perpendicular. That's why the reflected & transmitted colors shift with angle. The mirror coatings are not "cured". They are vaporized in a high vacuum chamber onto the lens. It is a precision process, & is almost impossible to make 2 batches exactly the same.

  • @ThatGlassesGuy03

    @ThatGlassesGuy03

    2 жыл бұрын

    I'm beginning to wonder what field you're in for a career Brian 😂. So yes, that's all largely correct, there are a handful of methods to apply these coatings but the most common these days is a dip layered base hard cost followed by the vacuum chamber and ion bombardment process which zeiss patented some time back 😁. Various metals are used to tune the light to some degree, so it's not all a direct relation to the thickness of the stack, but it is a large component. Easily seen with a thin layer of water on a lens with modern anti fog treatments on an AR stack. The exact makeup of each metal in varying thickness determines the end result. SiO2 that has been recently adopted to consumer grade automotive protection has been protecting lenses for over a decade 🙃💥 As for difficulty in duplication... very very very. Environmental conditions, lens thickness from power, and lens monster makeup all come in to play. Opti cote has practically perfected repeatability and durability of mirrors. That's our mirror of choice over here ❤️‍🔥

In high school I did vacuum coating as hobby. 99.9% of the coatings are silicon & metal oxides or fluorides. They are transparent, but have varying indexes from 1.3 (MgF2) to 2.2 (ZrO2). Diamond-like carbon is also used as of late. In coatings with no free metal, the optical characteristics are determined solely by thicknesses & indexes. All AR coatings (& most reflection coatings) are made this way. If the coating has free metal, it has high loss, then the lens must have less. This causes high back-reflection of light from behind. It is also less stable as metal is soft with higher expansion than oxides & prone to corrosion. I subscribe to tech magazines: www.vtcmag.com, NASA Tech briefs, EDN, Electronic Design

The Vuarnet nightlynx is one of the few dinosaurs of that by gone area that does an incredible job at enhancing contrast in low light without causing too many other issues. The old yellow canary glass is incredibly expensive if you can even get your hands on it for a prescription lens, and honestly vuarnet is the least expensive yellow glass I've seen when it comes to prescription. This may be one of the few places you’ll see me suggest polarized but with my tongue in my teeth. The benefit of cutting the glare is also problematic as you lose some of the ability to react to slick spots by not seeing them as readily. If polarized any grey with a blue mirror will work great. If non polar I would lean towards something red mirrored (better IR/ heat rejection than the other mirrors for better comfort)

    For the backside anti reflective it doesn't seem to make a difference in my experience. Most sunglass lenses should be rated categorically with cat 2 falling around 40%-60% and cat 3 being 60-88% light blocking (subtract from 100 for VLT i.e. visible light transmittance)

    There are specific dyes for ophthalmic lenses, and they're typically applied via dipping with the dye at just around 200°F. Some lenses won't accept any dye, some can even be ruined by the process. Particularly if you're other comment (just bought for $3?) is about the glasses you want to further tint, I wouldn't bother, you'll spend more on the proper dyes, and most likely the lens can't be tinted further 😅

    You should not put a mirror coating on a Transitions lens. When the lens is in the clear state, you will get horrendous glare (worse than glare from uncoated lens). Your selection of blue mirror/brown lens is a wise choice. For good optical performance, the lens color & mirror color should be from opposite sides of the color wheel. This way the back-reflected light from the coating will be absorbed by the lens. You need to try out the Enchroma CX3 lens (blue flash mirror, yellowish gray tint lens). Camera cannot show how this lens performs. You need to see it to believe it!

    A neutral gray works best for you guys. Yellows & Browns make all the greenery very overwhelming, but are handy for the occasional overcast day or early morning. If you want to "fine tune" things a bit, a nice grey base with a blue mirror will give a slight warm shift to the grey helping to enhance contrast slightly without the overwhelming affects of a brown or yellow... bonus points, the blue mirror reflects away most of the infra red and blue light helping to make the eyes more comfortable and feel cooler 😎
