Example 2: I used Sudoku Exchange instead of CTC, because they have easier features. My first attempt was last night, but I stopped because I was too sleepy. I restarted with some memory of last night, which helped. "Look for Swordfish ... after exhausting all initial Snyder notation..." Why wait? With 1, 3, and 7, not-quite Snyder notation cornerpenciled every possible cell. Also, 1, 3, and 7 given digits follow the "slot machine" pattern. Therefore, I spotted and applied the three swordfish while pencilmarking. The swordfish removed enough marks lowering three-per-block to two-per-block, making it genuine Snyder notation. The next productive step: centermarking the center row, and placing 13 pair at the ends of row 6. Either of two possible 123 Y-wings place digits in the four cells. Filling out the center column and placing 17 in column 6 provided nothing similar, although once I noticed it, 1s, 3s, and 7s were all placed. The next productive step after some penciling: last night, I first saw it as skyscrapers in 9s in either direction. But then I saw the loop in bivalued cells, 9s and even digits. I made sure that 9s were restricted to the loop cells. Some more centermarking led to a Y-wing: 69 and 89 in the loop, 68 in block 9. That disambiguated the loop and nothing much was left but filling in the digits. QoD: Definitely. Symmetrical swordfish: it's similar to the X-wing and jellyfish phenomenon, where the X-wing is intended, but the jellyfish is spotted. Example 3: I did the puzzle. I didn't find any swordfish or any other advanced position. Nothing more than lone digits and pairs. Video Question: The 9s must be in columns 1, 3, 7, and 9. It's a jellyfish. Sam Cappleman-Lynes: I still remember his dirty trick, that I fell for for a moment, but completely bamboozled Mark. "Evil! Evil!" he called it. A sequence with a difference of zero. It was a "genuinely approachable puzzle."

I remember Sam's trick as well. I love how you approached each of these examples. You seem to be quite good at Swordfish. Thank you for answering the questions as well, John.

@@SmartHobbies Thanks. I don't really have trouble going between single-cell patterns and pairs and triples. I see a parallel thinking with both concepts. Begin with, "These three rows, the digit is constrained to these three columns," and convert to "These three columns, the digit is constrained to these three rows." Considering a house (such as a block): "These three digits must go in these three cells" becomes "These three cells are restricted to these three digits."

My dillema is in example.2, can you do swordfish in rows 2 6 and 9 and columns 3 68? and how to choose between them this one that is used in example (rows 2 6 7) and other possibilities? I'm beginner so please do mind if question is stupid🙈

Great question. Thank you for asking. I looked at the example and there is no swordfish in the rows and columns you mentioned. You can only have at most 3 cell possibilities in those rows, and then when comparing the 3 rows, the candidates appear in at most the same 3 columns. I think you meant to ask if you do the swordfish in either rows 1,5,9 or columns 1,5,9. The answer is yes. Example 2 swordfish can be approached by either using the rows or columns as the base sets. This is called a symmetrical swordfish, and they are quite common. They yield the exact same eliminations as well. In contrast, the swordfish in example 1 is not symmetrical. It doesn’t work if you try to use the columns as the base sets. I hope that helps. Would you like me to recommend a couple of swordfish puzzles for you to practice on?
