Best Stationary Constant Wave Lumahai Beach, Kauai, Hawaii

These local Hawaiians happened to be making a stationary wave while I was enjoying my vacation at the beautiful beach in Lumahai Beach in Kauai, Hawaii . They really know how to utilize their resources! I hope to be back soon to this beautiful island soon! The video starts kinda slow but in the middle to the end these guys get the best of this river! Mahalo!

    at 2:50 the video cuts from the stream being a garden hose flow to a raging torrent; seeing some of the intermediate stages would have been interesting.

    Alright People Calm your panties. 1. This is a RIVER, not a Lake. 2. All Rivers naturally flow into the ocean at some point including this one. 3. Kauai has one of the highest rainfall rates in the world sometimes 450 inch's a year. No Eco systems were destroyed, thousands of fish were not killed and blah blah. educate before you blast anger. I Certainly wouldn't do what these guys did but really? its not hurting anything.

    Actually, the section of a river just before it enters the ocean is known as an estuary, and it has radically different pH levels, layering of salt, general saltiness, and vastly different species than the subtidal section of a beach. Some estuaries cope quite well with being opened to the ocean water and the subtidal section of a beach can be quite receptive to many estuaries. But estuaries are opened by workers only after being informed by environmental scientists monitoring the region and making sure there is no risk. Sure, estuary openings are often seasonal, but that also means there's a reason for them to be closed at certain times of the year and open in others.

    I find it funny that there are ignorant idiots out there that are offended by this. The sand berm will naturally block the flow of the river, but you cannot stop the river. It will spontaneously break through and empty into the ocean. It can happen more than once in a season, especially if there are periods of heavy rain. Digging it out doesn't change anything.

All with absolutely no assistance from any kind of flotation device. Unreal.

Kauai is the most wettest spot on earth! even if they didn't create it first, it all eventually will happen one way or another, during flash floods this always happens, and when the high tide comes in, the sand is formed again to block the river...but all rivers here all leads to the ocean.

It carries the nickname " Luma-die as more drownings occur at this beach than almost any other beach in the Hawaiian Islands. The bodyboarding and body surfing at this beach is amazing at times, for the experienced only. The slope on this beach creates a very strong current, and it's not visible when you're looking at the water and if you have an untrained eye. Always respect the locals

    It's actually not very good for estuaries to be connected to the ocean unless it's known that it's safe for the animals and plants on either side, either along the shore just below the tide or in the estuary. Many estuaries are freshwater, so creating an artificial stream between them may cause the freshwater to become saltwater and can kill large numbers of fish and other animals. Some freshwater species may try to swim out to sea, following its natural instincts to go with the flow of the river, and be killed by the saltiness of the water or other predators. Those predators may become sick and die after having eaten a freshwater species they'd never encountered before. And the reverse is also true. Some saltwater fish try and follow the stream and can make it into freshwater where they die. Mixing the two ecosystems can be deadly. Usually beach clearers may be given permission to dig a trench to allow a once-flowing estuary to connect back to the ocean, but only after extensive monitoring of pH levels, salt levels, salt layering and species distributions. It might be fun for humans to dig trenches themselves and enjoy standing waves, but it can have pretty deadly consequences.

  • @nbarca

    @nbarca

    Most the river in these parts flow naturally into the ocean 99% of the time. The waves and tide will push saltwater back into the system (which because fresh water floats on salt, the deeper parts of the river are saltwater up until the first rapids.) You see some saltwater fish and a few freshwater species of goby and shrimp. Occasionally the sand blocks the river (as seen) and the water level rises and inevitably will break and do what this video shows. ...except surfers can break it themselves and make stationary waves to ride. It has to be unusually high for it to make waves like that. But doing so just brings things back to normal. In this case, it has completely benign effects on wildlife in the estuary.
