Joe Edelman Joe, I was looking for the Tether Tools cable for my Nikon D7100 but could not tell if it would fit. Do you know if they are also made for the D7100?

Kudo's for mentioning Digicamcontrol, its the only one I know of that will tether the 3xxx & 5xxx nikons. It's definitely not fast but does write the image to both camera and local drive simultaneously. With its time lapse controls its wonderful for astrophotography.

Recently had to shoot tethered with a Nikon, but was worried about having just one copy of the photos saved on the laptop. Thanks so much for your recommendation on how to create backups on the fly via GoodSync. Tethering was done on an MS Surface Pro with only one USB port (used for the camera), so i backed up to the built-in micro SD card reader instead. Worked like a charm. Love your channel!

I'll have to look at my hard drive back up solution given I am a Nikon shooter. I don't have the luxury like Canon users do of having an in camera SD RAW back up. Canon definately has the advantage there 😃 I'm still considering the tether block solution you mentioned in your previous video. I bought a Tether Tools jerkstopper and whilst it does a good job I'm still a bit nervous about it being able to prevent usb socket damage in the event the cable is pulled hard. 😯

Excellent video Joe. I have the cabling, just need the tetherBLOCK and I'll see if Lightroom will be sufficient for my needs.

Glad about this series. This morning the new Tripp-Lite powered extension cable arrived from USA. Curious, if it will solve my sync-probs with the Tether-Tool cable and Booster. USB 3.0 is so much more prone to failure. Cheers Dirk

HELLO Joe!! I just first tried to connect my D7200 with lightroom but the program just cant recognize my camera!...... your advice would be very very helpful! Thank you so much!!

FYI, Nikon Camera Control 2 allows for tethered live view of Nikon cameras in both movie and stills mode. It's clunky but it works. And it auto launches ViewNX-i as soon as you capture. But you can set up a watch folder for LR and have the images auto import from wherever you point the Nikon software. Also, the Camera Control 2 software allows you to save to both the camera and the computer at the same time, or one or the other. Costs about $180 USD.

I believe the title of the video is "Best" software Feint. You are potentially the only photographer who has EVER recommended Nikons Camera Control. Even you call it clunky - which is generous.

Good video Joe. Now I have the Nikon D850 it will no longer tether with Lightroom (V6.6.1) only with the latest Lightroom 7 which is subscription software (and I refuse to do that) You're right that Lightroom is painfully slow in tethered mode but as I only use tethered for table top products it wasn't a real problem. My main concern is the lack of Parallel writing to the internal memory cards with Nikons ! Why ?? I have been shooting in the studio when the link between camera and computer has dropped (why? - who knows!) and I discover that the last few shots have not been recorded anywhere. Have to go back and repeat those shots (and if I don't spot it at the time - well that really becomes a problem). Canon are so much better in this respect and I just don't understand why Nikon haven't followed suit. Going to download a demo of the Capture One Pro - heard a lot of good things but it is a beast to learn the software. My brain has reached the stage that whenever I learn something new I have to forget something to make room for the new stuff - like a hard drive. It would be simple if I could organise my brain to forget all the Lightroom stuff I've learnt since its first release (2006) and then take in Capture One. But brains don't work like that ... I'd probably end up forgetting my children's names !

HDD RPM has proven to be less important when a drive has a larger cache. Then again, that cache does fill up rapidly if you're shooting 50 MB RAW files multiple times a second.

Hi, Joe- I have a network attached array that is fast and reliable, provides redundancy in the event of hardware failures, and let's me not worry as much about syncing data around. I keep full backups of my images on 4tb external drives. This was a cool video- I wish Nikon did the split write thing- The way they can mirror data across memory cards means they already have the base code for that written... I feel like they really make some questionable decisions around their feature set sometimes.. Thanks!

I have been using Canon EOS Utility with 7D Mark II for quite a while. While it is helpful for product shots composition the live view looks very grainy and it is not useful to help me nail an accurate focus when I manually fine tune focus ring on camera, very frustrating. I have to always look at camera screen to confirm the focus. Maybe time to spend on Capture one?... or is it something else to cause grainy look on laptop when tethering?... hmm...

Hard to say Hongs - I have never used that camera. It honestly just sounds like a quality issue with your viewfinder - tethering to a computer should give you a higher resolution preview.

How did you tethering your Olympus?

If that meets your needs birdie399 - that's awesome. Obviously it doesn't have to raw generator capabilities that the other software does.

I am ready, working on my small studio in my basement. Joe i am looking at a use D800 for weddings and portrait, i use my DX for everything else, but heard they had issue. what are your thoughts, i know lenses are more important than camera.

The D800 is a great camera LIllyman JPL. While I personally prefer the ful frame cameras - there are a lot of amazing photographer shooting weddings with APS-C sensors. Certainly - it is better if you are using one of the higher end APS-C's like the D500 or the Sony cameras.

My hard copy of lightroom no longer supports my Nikon so now I have to find some tethering software. I only shoot tethered very occasionally and the £300 cost of Capture One is just to expensive. I've used the trial version - it's great for tethering but I prefer Photoshops RAW converter. So I need a simple to use tethering software for a Nikon D750. Just doesn't seem to be anything out there that looks reliable - Nikons 'Camera Control Pro 2' looks and sound terrible from the Amazon reviews.

By the way I use Canon

If you are a Sony shooter, Capture One Pro for Sony is only around US$60. Note, you can only use Sony RAW files with this option.

QDSLR costs around $10 and is by far the best android app I have ever used, for nikon and canon. There are other options as well but I`d say 3-4 are worth a shot.

Can Joe or someone that has tried capture ONe with a Sony A7R2 comment on transfer speed (delay) with wired tethering? I ask because from what I understand the Sony has slower USB (2.0) data transfer rates.

i ve mostly used digi cam control to shoot tethered but the issue i face is that i cant use the shutter button when using LIVE VIEW while tethered with digi cam control on my pc . do you have a solution for that ?

Sorry Haseeb Imran - I don't have a solution as I am not a Digi Cam user - but I don't understand why you would need to use the shutter button on your camera when you are viewing a live view image on your computer.

ive tried other softwares as well like control my nikon 5.3 but it has the same issue even whit i use my phone as an external monitor but im browsing alot and asking alot of photographers but i ve got nothing and am looking for different ways but i dont want to risk losing my dslr by experimenting with it so i ask if you discover a way please share it ill be very gratefull thanks sir and love your tutorials alot

It is 2017, one should simply be able to turn on Wifi and click the shutter. What SHOULD happen next is an image pops up on your iPad or iPhone, wirelessly I might add. I've used Eye-fi for years, isn't it time the Camera makers catch up to this old technology?

I agree Adrian David Payne and most of the manufacturers do have wi-fi solutions. The issue isn't the cameras - it is the wi-fi technology being too slow. Even Eye-fi cards are painful if you are shooting people.

Right. The 5D MKIV is headed in the right direction but stopped short of the goal line. With Canon Connect thumbnails appear on an iPad almost instantaneously, but you still have to take your hands off the camera to click on the thumbnail to enlarge the photo. All photos should appear large and in succession on the screen, click after click. Shutter Snitch has this ability with the Eye-fi, but like you said... Painful!

You're right about wireless tethering, its not ready yet for full RAW processing and backup. Interestingly though, if you only use the tether for live quality control and not RAW saving or backup, I did discover that the Canon EOS Utility provides an option. Buried in its menus, you can set it up so the RAW file continues to save on the camera card, and the .jpg is sent to the tethered machine, when your camera is set to shoot in RAW + jpg. The jpg does not save to the card, and the RAW does not go to the tether, which means that card space and tether speed respectively, is not affected. Transferring tethered .jpgs is instantaneous, even in burst. Obviously the purpose here is not about immediate backup, but simple live quality check; focus, lighting and subject expressions/ blinks, etc. This is good for 'ol guys' like me who struggle to see images on the camera screen, but a glance on a laptop, can catch errors. Oh ... btw, my newer 5D4 actually came with a decent little tether block that actually screws into a special spot by the usb input, instead of under the camera. A neat solution that actually works.

Really shouldn't be shooting to an external drive. Install an SSD in the laptop and shoot there, then back up in between looks.
