Best Smokeless Fire Pit: Solo Stove (Bonfire & Ranger) vs Breeo (Double flame & X-series)

Spoiler Alert: The Breeo X-Series is the best smokeless fire pit.
Watch to hear why.
After spending many hours researching smokeless fire pits, I created this review to help you choose between Solo Stove and Breeo. I own the Solo Stove Ranger & Breeo X-series. I borrowed my neighbor's Solostove bonfire and my friend's brand new Breeo Double Flame with the outpost grill attachment.

    I've enjoyed a friend's Solo stove and appreciate how portable it is. It also has a great flame - maybe the best. Cleaning it was a pain though. It was nasty when wet and blew all over when it was windy. So, I decided to go with a Breeo after watching Lee's video and others. The Breeo is great looking and built like a tank at around 100 pounds. I really like the two-tone look and Corten patina. The grills are awesome too. I have a large brick patio and lots of Adirondack chairs, so I wanted the largest smokeless pit available with the largest opening. I went with the standard Breeo X30 without the SearPlate rim. I think it's easier to sear in a cast iron skillet and MUCH easier to clean up afterwards. Plus, I can use 24" to 30" walnut logs which I cut and split myself. They are easier to handle than smaller 12" to 16" logs, allow for less splitting, and create a beautiful hot fire. In my mind, there's no real comparison between the Solos and the Breeos. They both create beautiful "smokeless" flames but are built very differently for different purposes. A decision between them comes down to whether you're looking for a portable pit or a much heavier and durable non-portable centerpiece (and more attractive IMO) that you can cook and grill on too. The fact is, I'll also get a Solo stove next summer when we go camping!

    Ive had a bonfire for a couple years. This video was pretty spot on. The solo works well but it should have come with a better cover. Ownership is a pita. Its marketed as lasting forever but mines already very rusty because contrary to popular belief stainless will rust when heated repeatedly. Its a such a hassle to clean wet ash out of the solo. Heres the scenario: you start a fire, it burns really efficiently, you wanna go in but you cant extinguish pit, you have to let it burn out, theres overnight dew, you clean ash “mud” for an hour with a hose, lye kills your grass, your welcome.

    I have a Solo Bonfire. You will not have the rusting issue if you buy the Solo Lid for it. You put the lid on add the end of the evening when you fire has burned down to just embers, and it will keep the stove from getting wet from rain or dew until you use it again. It also has an excellent spark screen option that fits the unit well and has a removable screen top that can be removed while hot with the included tools to add more wood during your fire. If portability is a concern, the Bonfire is much lighter (only 20 lbs) so it is easy to move around or store in the garage in the included carry bag for the winter.

    @@Johncb15 why can't you just throw a metal trashcan lid over the solo stove to kill the fire and protect it from moisture ? Seems like you could do that pretty cheap and easily with a lid you already have at home for free.

  • @Johncb15

    Picked up the 19” x-series a couple weeks ago. The key to optimal operation that I have found is to make sure you feed it lots of wood once you have a good bed of coals. It has to be running hot before it goes “smokeless”. I’m obviously biased, but it’s the best pit I’ve used/owned.

    @@driposa I don’t cook on the 19”, but you could probably cook a dozen burgers on it at a time. Due to the double wall design, I find I have to sit a lot closer to the fire pit to feel the same amount of heat as my old traditional pit. The smokeless design makes this possible, and the flames it creates are beautiful and are similar to those you see through the viewing window of a wood stove. These things have a healthy appetite for wood, something to keep in mind if you go with the 24.

    I ordered 19 inch. They generally recommended 1-4 people for the 19 vs the 24 is for more people. (Not a solid rule) I wanted the 24 but also wanted to be able to load it up if I went camping ⛺️ so went with the 19 and grill. I recommend going with COR10 steel over the stainless. It will save you $100. The sear rim adds $100 to the price. I got that feature but keep in mind it does close the opening some for log 🪵 sizes. If you are going to leave it out by a grill then j would pass on the sear rim. I also got the grill attachment because it lets you customize your heat when cooking . Again this feature is good if you will be cooking with this thing. It can be an all in one type device. It also radiates much more heat than the solo because of the heavier gauge metal. I think the COR 10 steel will get hotter because it is a more dense metal.

    IMO the bonfire and breeo is really a matter of preference. Get a solo if you want portability, efficiency, and slightly lower price tag (after getting complimentary accessories); get a Breeo if you want that rustic look, cooking ability, and relatively lower maintenance. There a bit too much confirmation bias in this review because you don't own the solo bonfire and don't realize the accessories that supplements it. The is especially true about (what I consider) the biggest drawback of the solo highlighted here, which is the water issue. The solo sells a separate lid as well, just like the breeo, in addition to the cover and carrying case.

Your commented you would go for the 24 if you had more room, but you seem to have an area large enough for two of these 19" side by side. I have an area a bit bit more open than yours but I likely won't have many around the fire mostly just me, x19 heat up faster and go smokeless for sure. Also may sit in a gazebo about 8' away rather than close to the thing. But I don't want it to seem like it's over or under sized.

    This video is somewhat outdated. Solo Stove has had SS covers for over a year and have cooking systems which include grills, griddles and woks. They've also came out with Heat Deflectors that direct much of the heat toward your lower legs and feet when sitting. There 2.0 versions of their pits have removable ash grates and ash pans for emptying ash from the pit.

    The solo is much better at burning and getting to a smoke-free burn, which is a bummer because I like the looks and the fact that you don’t have to have that chintzy cover better on the Breeo. If you actually did a side-by-side burn comparison, the solo would have won the Fire category - that is unless the X series burns better than the Double Flame - I’ve never seen one of those burn.

  • @Leesvids

    I did do a side by side burn but they were so similar I didn’t bother recording it. Only noticeable difference was between traditional and smokeless. The xseries does burn a little better than double flame but difference seems negligible.

    Funny story - since I posted this video I’ve noticed they always a have a sale. Simplisafe does the same trick to get people to purchase. If I had to guess, I bet solo stove marks up their prices to make us think we’re getting the same value product as breeo at a lower price. Based on weight of product (raw materials) and location of manufacturing it makes senses that solo would have much higher profit margins if sold at same price as breeo.

    It depends on application. If I’m traveling to a spot where I’m parking the car and walking 25 yards or less, the breeo is totally cool (e.g. camping or beach with a parking lot). if you’re taking a long walk then the solo stove ranger is better keeping in mind of course that you have to drag wood with you too.

    @@Leesvids Surprised? Really? You have the Solo Stove priced at $120 more than it cost then in Oct 2020 and it's currently $10 cheaper now than it was then. That's the stove, stand, and the cover which you say in the video. You are not clear about the Breeo but your board says stand (included on the Breeo) and cover. The Breeo is now and was then $499 with the cover being an additional $79. So Total is $578 NOT $479. I also have one of the Breeo's which I bought it in Nov 20 and for the stove and lid I paid $605 then. You have the two stoves listed in this video only separated by $10. when in actuality it was $256 then, that's NOT a fair comparison. I have both. I like both. The Breeo ONLY gets the edge because of the Made in USA label. The solo stove burns better, is easier to light, and against your opinion IMO its easier to clean. You turn it over or shop vac. I have my Breeo at my cabin which I rent out so I liked the tougher steel and I was able to physically mount it so you cannot turn it over. I like the Breeo accessories if I were to cook over it but outside of hotdogs and marshmallows on a stick (of which the Solo Stove tools are phenomenally well built)that's not why I bought these so that's a non issue for me.

  • @Leesvids

    @Leesvids

    2 жыл бұрын

    Not really. I was just disappointed with the solo stove product at that cost after buying it. Breeo being USA made is just cool… but it also results in a better product with better raw materials (i.e. the steel is 2x as thick/strong). I’m not carrying a 19 inch fire pit + 2 bundles of wood a long distance… so I rather have a thicker and longer lasting pit for the price.

  • @jvernonlusung6240
    @jvernonlusung62402 жыл бұрын

    You'd have earned more street cred if you had actually bothered to start fires in all of the pits for unbiased comparison. The Breeos may be more durable, crafted with thicker steel but they burn less efficiently, are much heavier and definitely NOT portable. The Solos are lighter, better engineered and have a really uniform and cleaner burn. They also pack well for easier storage and greater portability.

When making s'mores, i place the gram crackers + chocolate on there for pre-melted chocolate. And BTW, no one said SoloStove "sucks". Neither of these products suck - that is nonsense. A truly horrible review. I had already ordered my Ranger before I watched your video, but your video wouldn’t have persuaded me to do otherwise. Your review is obviously dated as: 1) Solo now has a removable base plate and ash pan for easy cleanup; and 2) Solo stoves have cast iron grills, griddles & woks for stove top cooking. All of which are smaller and less cumbersome than the Breeo monstrosity. Solos also have lids and spark arresters available. All in all Solo offers the best all around fire pit/stove system.
