Best Single DIN Head Unit? Kenwood eXcelon KDC-X305 Review + Pre-amp Voltage & Distortion Testing

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Kenwood KDC-X305 might possibly be the best single DIN head unit on the market right now. In a world filled with inflation and shrinkflation, the Kenwood eXcelon KDC-X305 PACKS IN the features PLUS the performance at a price point other brands can't touch. Why do I think the Kenwood KDC-X305 is the best single DIN head unit? Oh let me count the ways!
For starters we've got Kenwood's signature clean, warm, detailed and ever so smooth DAC. The Kenwood KDC-X305 sounds like your typical double DIN Kenwood eXcelon touch screen, yet the performance is packaged and delivered in the compact single DIN size.
On top of having that signature eXcelon sound quality - the best single DIN head unit would have to also include a slew of audio control features. The KDC-X305 does not disappoint in this department This single DIN head unit is loaded with audio control features such as 13-band EQ with Q factor adjustment, Digital Time Alignment, Built in Crossover Network (including a 3-way option for tweeter setup), Volume Offset, Space Enhancer, Sound Reconstruction, Speaker Size Selection and more.
Let's not forget - the Kenwood KDC-X305 has a feature that has pretty much gone extinct. Not only is it lacking as a standard feature in newer vehicles, it's also pretty much absent from 90% of the car stereos on the market. I have clients with brand new vehicles spending hundreds of dollars to add this feature back in. And here is this modest Kenwood eXcelon KDC-X305 single DIN head unit for only $150 equipped (GASP) with a CD player!!! WOW.
Okay, but are the specs really accurate? How can we be sure this is legit and really the best value single DIN head unit? I put it through some tests with the Oscilloscope and will show you whether or not this thing really is 5 volts and if it's a CLEAN pre-amp signal. We'll find out at what point that pre-amp starts to clip and at what point the internal amp starts clipping as I run the KDC-X305 through some tests.
So grab a cup of joe or your favorite tea. Hang out and watch what happens when I put the Kenwood eXcelon KDC-X305 through some testing with the Oscilloscope!!

    Have this radio ordered already and then went to check out a review video to see what it can do, thank you for having a good video with actual knowledge and detail. Can’t believe this thing can push out that much pre-out voltage and get that close to its max volume without distorting!! My subs are gonna love this thing. I’m still gonna use my DD-1 to tune it once I get it, but getting to see what it can do on your scope was very cool and a big relief lol. Keep up the great content! Subbed.

    Thank you so much for watching and thank you very much for your feedback! I'm so glad you found it helpful :) I am a huge fan of the voltage that I see out of Kenwood decks. With some other brands, you really have to have everything maxed - volume and sub level - in order to get 4 volts. I love how Kenwood gives you the ability to get that voltage at lower volumes as long as you know what your safety cut off point is. Good luck with your system!

    I have a DD1 as well and was pleasantly surprised it was clean all the way to 34/35 on the volume. Even 35 is barely clipping at all so technically could get away with it. Hardly ever get above 27 most of the time unless I'm demo-ing for someone.

    Great review! Have you compared this one to the excelon Kmm-x705? I was trying to decide between these two. Its odd that on this one different input sources had different output levels...I wonder if the x705 also does that. At this point do you think there's anything better in the x305/x705 price range? Mostly playing from phone Bluetooth....90's car so just a single din.

    Thank you for the test of KDC 305. Long long time ago, i would have been called a stereo nerd. I just have one clarification for you. It appears that no one knows what the Loudness button does. Original the Loudness Button was only found on high end home stereos. When one is playing there stereo at lower volumes the bass will drop out. The Loudness button slightly boost the bass at lower volumes to make the music sound fuller The loudness button has no effect on med to high volume settings. I hope this information is helpful. I will be upgrading my current Kenwood to the KDC 305 soon. Thank you the pre-amp clipping test.

    I'm glad someone else knows what loudness is for! This is something I've mentioned in other videos where it boosts the frequencies that are harder to hear at lower volumes. I guess it doesn't really boost 40 Hz much though. Thanks so much for watching!!!

Only single DIN I think probably sounded better was the Sony RSX-GS9, but 1) it's 10 times the price and it's not 10 times better and 2) horrible user interface and very flaky app.

    USBs are cheap. I made one with all songs I use for demos, favorite songs, then other ones with full albums etc. I don't typically have any more than 100 tracks on a USB stick for that reason. On a 2DIN it's lots easier to scroll, I agree there.

    I'm looking at the KMM-705....does it have any issues with Bluetooth phone connection? My old Kenwood would have issues with both Android and iOS where sometimes it didn't reconnect well and id spend 5 min trying to get connected. I pretty much always play through the phone, my own music and Spotify on the phone so stable Bluetooth experience is important. Do you have it powering speakers directly or through an amp? I'm hoping it will be able to push some upgraded components pretty hard until I get ready to buy a 4 channel amp.

  • @carstereochick

    @carstereochick

    7 ай бұрын

    I feel like Kenwood has not waivered from their signature eXcelon sound, but they're definitely putting their more premium components in their higher end touch screen reference series. When I compared decks in 2012 between Pioneer, Sony, Kenwood, Alpine etc. hands down, the KDC-X996 won out and I feel like they still have that same audio profile and control when you do a modern day comparison. If you had room for a double din, I do think the DMX958XR would be superior over the KDC-X998 or KDC-X305. But it's a slight difference, kind of like the difference with and without Supreme. Also no CD player on that one. If you want CD you could get a DDX9907XR. That's also part of their more premium eXcelon products, eXcelon Reference.

    I didn't know Infinity got into the head unit market! We don't have that here in the US so I couldn't tell you how it would compare. From what I can see, the Alpha 100 is a really basic single DIN bluetooth radio with only 1 set of RCA preouts so it's not something you'd want if you plan on building a full audio system with aftermarket amplifiers.

    I have a new 2023 Tacoma but I am going to do a separate system and leave stock alone. Going to put HU in glove box any fancy electrical unit slides that will pop out of glove box would be cool!? Going to put rear fill and two 8"s on back wall with seats down. And in front a 2 way and a full range, so 10 speakers total no subwoofer. I listen to classic rock. Cab is small! It is my understanding that I will have to ad something to the dash speakers so the stock system work without front door speakers installed. Just using stock HU for google maps. I like this idea for an install as i will be able to take out easier when I sell vehicle and reuse parts?? Your the pro tell me what you think. Thank you Cal PS: I just heard back from Kenwood the rear subwoofer pre-outs are left and right channel full range frequencies which is great for me as I would rather have to 8" woofers instead of subwoofers.

  • @carstereochick

    @carstereochick

    10 ай бұрын

    I do! I bet we would see similar results and I can definitely add that to the list of models to test/videos to make. The tweeter option I think is a neat concept, but I can also see it only being used in real specific applications. You can basically turn off the rear speakers (select "none" on the rear speaker size menu) and use your front speaker outputs to run your tweeters and your rear speaker outputs to run your front mids. I could see this working nicely if you want front sound stage only and you want to put all of the head unit power (or audio control) towards the front speakers and if you have a set up with more of a middler on the dash like a 2.5" or 3.5". Kind of like one of Kenwood's middlers like the KFC-X2C or 3c. I wouldn't use this feature in place of an external crossover network that came with a set of premium component speakers. Only reason I say that is if you don't match the filtering exactly the same way as the manufacturer does with their included crossover you can either damage the tweeter or you can actually end up making it sound harsh without trying to. John made that mistake once with his Morel Hybrid's using his Helix V Eight DSP which is an 8-channel so he was using the crossover in the DSP for each speaker. He ended up reading through the Morel manual to make sure he entered it exactly as recommended for active crossover. The tweeter crossover on the deck doesn't have the level of detail you'd get in a DSP but it does have frequency selections of 1 kHz, 1.6 kHz, 2.5 kHz, 4 kHz, 5 kHz, 6.3 kHz, 8 kHz, 10 kHz, 12.5 kHz.

    This is one of those cars I'd have you come by the shop with so I could see it in person. I can't tell by pics if the Metra 95-7636B or 99-7636B would be applicable because they don't differentiate in their application guide between the factory 7" touch screen and 8" touch screen. It might be the same, hard to tell. So I don't know if the mounting kit is the same, but I can tell you the iDatalink Maestro RR does support retaining the 360 camera, steering wheel controls, stock amp if equipped, plus parking sensors, but I do not see anything about retaining access to vehicle settings or climate control display. From what I can see in Google image search, it looks like the electronic climate control has its own separate display. I'm not sure if any of that shows up on the radio screen. iDatalink does show it retains basic vehicle info, but I don't see anything about vehicle settings. I recommend reaching out to them to verify. They may need pics of these settings. I ran into this once with a 2019 VW Jetta where I got lucky and it turned out it was an error on their website and it did support retaining vehicle settings. Definitely check with Metra on the dash kit fitment and reach out to iDatalink support on coverage to see if maybe they missed it or they can confirm that perhaps it only retains the basics and not access to vehicle settings. And you would need an iDatalink Maestro compatible radio, the ADS-MRR, HRN-HRR-NI2 plus optional head unit harness like an ACC-HU-KEN1 for example if you went with a Kenwood DMX958XR and probably a Metra 40-NI12 antenna adapter.

    So hard for me to say without sitting in your truck and listening to your set up! Assuming you’re powering the speakers off the head unit you’ll want to use the built in HPF crossovers. Try 80 Hz HPF and see how that sounds assuming you crossed over your subs at 80 Hz too. And then just remember less is more with EQ. I like to leave off all the various options available and focus on using the EQ to correct for any brightness or tinniness and just use it to smooth things out.

Through the search, I somehow came to the conclusion that this Kenwood KDC-BT960DAB is the best choice for such a 1-DIN head unit model because it has great pre out power and somehow those with 2Volts pre out are out of the question. I even had in mind the possibility of buying a 2-DIN 7" head unit, but what is good costs so much more, because the cheaper one is not worth the money. Of course, it is very important to me that the head unit has a rotary KNOB for the volume and the LCD itself the head unit screen isn't even important, it's important to have a good sound from the head unit and that I can adjust the volume with the rotary knob, but I could also get some kind of Wireless Android auto with a built-in dash camera and then I have everything.

    I have a Kenwood Excelon X304 that I bought from a guy brand new in the box for $80. It's like a budget 80PRS. The 80PRS is still a better deck overall but A) you can't buy them new anymore and B) who wants to pay $400 for a used deck? I think for under $200 the X304 is hard to beat. 5 volt preouts, they are clean up to volume 34 (35 is max) has 13 band EQ, time alignment, CD, USB, Bluetooth, AUX in, bunch of crossover and audio settings etc. I was able to dial kn the sound in my vehicle just as good as when I had the Pioneer 80PRS years ago. I'm not sure what the difference between the X304 and 305 is but I'm sure they must be almost identical

    Hello. I have the KDC-X705. I too have similar results. I have a max unclipped @24 with speaker output, max unclipped @33 with the RCA output. However when I adjust my amp gains, Sony XM-4ES, I can only get max unclipped @27. If I try to past that, the signal on the scope starts to get a little wonky. Not clipped, but it looks like interference at the tip of the scope. I am using a 1k 0db wave tone.

  • @carstereochick

    @carstereochick

    7 ай бұрын

    Hi - just for clarification to make sure I'm following you correctly. You got the same results at the head unit pre-amp outputs, max unclipped at 33. So I'm assuming you then set that as your "max volume" and then with the scope you checked the speaker level outputs at the amp and found the signal looks wonky at that level. And you're saying that's the case regardless of the gain level on the amp? Lowering the gain doesn't effect it, but lowering to 27 cleans it up?

  • @71camarors

    @71camarors

    7 ай бұрын

    @@carstereochick Yes. Setting the max unclipped at 33 and checking the gain at the speakers of the amp results in interference with the wave pattern. Even if I turn down the gain to an unclipped pattern, it still shows a little squiggly at the peak. If I turn the volume down to 27 and look, the pattern is clean at the peak and am able to adjust to an unclipped pattern.

    Oh that's a great question. Kenwood units DO NOT like anything below 4 ohms. I once had a VW Jetta with stock 2 ohm speakers and all the client did was a head unit upgrade. We ended up having to wire the front and rear speakers in series eliminating fader control just so it wouldn't go into protect mode.

    It really depends on the application and vehicle honestly. If you have a newer car where we can get a digital output from the stock head unit, I'm using a pre-amp adapter to go digital out from the factory radio into a high end DSP amp from Helix for example. That would be cleaner/more detailed than any traditional aftermarket head unit DAC. I guess along the same lines, if you went with the Stinger HEIGH10, same thing - you can go digital out to a high end DSP amp. If we're strictly talking traditional aftermarket head unit running analog RCA pre-amp connections? I am a fan of the Kenwood eXcelon DMX958XR or DMX1057XR or the Sony Mobile ES head units like the XAV-9500ES or RSX-GS9. Alpine has their new F1 status product too which I'm sure is killer. But half the battle is quality of equipment and then the other half is execution - proper installation, set up and tuning.

You think the highest volume I should turn it up in hu woukd be 29? Since it’s clean up to there. And I’m going to put the 3.5s on front and tweeters on rear. Do the hu crossover setup work with internal amp or just preoutputs or both?

    Huh. On USB? The only thing I can think of is maybe you can't go up with it on the FM/AM source as the manual states: "Presets the initial volume level of each source by comparing to the FM volume level". Normally we only ever use this feature to dial it down if it's being installed in a car with a stock speaker level amp and we need to level match between the stock amp and the head unit amp.

    Check your app settings on whatever device you're using. So far I have found in Apple Music you want Sound Check turned off. In Android you want to turn off Absolute Volume. And then each app like Spotify, Amazon HD, etc. have their own versions too where they are level matching all your tracks so the output level is the same. They all call it something different. The issue is if you have an older recording with very little output, it drops everything in your library to the same level. The feature is a good idea for headphones, but bad for car stereo. It's a measurable difference in output.
