'Best shot in history': Niklas Edin stuns with spin at World Curling Championship
Спорт
Sweden’s Niklas Edin, the six-time world men’s curling championship, made what is being called "the greatest shot in curling history" at the World Men's Curling Championship.

Sweden, who were trailing by two points to Norway in the 10th end, needed to score two points with their last shot to force an extra end. His attempt, made with huge amounts of spin on the stone, is an unusual sight at the top level and successfully levelled the scores by the finest of margins.

You know it's something special when your wife texts you at work to tell you about a curling shot she just witnessed (which mine did).

I called my mom to tell her to watch this shot. I said it was the most craziest shot I ever seen in my life. I never thought that was a possibility =D
The fact it was made against us in Norway is so typical Sweden......

I watched this live and thought it was a joke shot at first. Then everyone in the room was yelling at the television when we realized what was about to happen. Edin is a legend!
Love how authentically delighted Sander is. You speak for all of us; buddy!
That was the most amazing shot I've ever seen. And I'm not sure why.

also, they had to get 2 points, being two point down. Thats why he spun it, because without the spin, 1 point would have been the maximum possible

the only option was to spin the stone in order for the red (which was in best position) to move backwards
Question- Is it still the greatest shot if he only scores 1? I can't decide.

if the shooter rolls too far we'd still be talking about this but i wouldn't call it the greatest shot of all time. of course he has to go for 2 but in a situation where he only needed 1, he'd just go for the easy draw. the pressure of NEEDING 2 adds a lot to this shot

I’d say it would be in the top 5 shots if he rolled too far and scored the single. But scoring the deuce definitely makes it the best shot I’ve ever seen. Only thing that I can think would have been an even more dramatic shot would be if it was in the 10th in the gold medal game and he was down by one with the hammer. Win or lose on that shot…. He shot it with calculated precision, yet with childlike creative freedom. I’ll admit I thought it was a circus shot when he was about to release, but instead it was sheer brilliance !!!!
why is it called curling when it goes straight?

Wikipedia says 'Players induce a curved path, described as curl, by causing the stone to slowly rotate as it slides.' And on second viewing it does curve so I need to open my eyes before posting. Anyway, a fascinating game originating in Scotland, also known for its whiskey, so maybe after a couple of drams it really really curls. Lang may yer lum reek.

Was it merely the greatest shot because it twisted around its own axis?
I don’t understand
This is a terrific shot, one of the best of all time. But circa 1987, Patrick Ryan from Manitoba, Canada shot a triple-raise takeout to win the Brier (national championships). There isn't much footage online, but I don't think this shot beats it.

I don't know about the best shots ever. But: when I was 15 years old (or so) and living in a town of about 33,000 people, a guy from my home town by the name of Bud Somerville won the World Curling Championship. Seems pretty cool for a guy from a town of 33,000 people.

@@michelpoulin4095 Commentator Russ Howard, former world champion and 2006 Olympic Gold Medalist stated on the live TSN broadcast that this was the greatest shot he had ever seen -- not that it was just a nice shot. In his World Championship dominance over the past 10 years, Edin has shown himself to be the G.O.A.T., especially after coming back from last year's nagging injury to beat Gushue in last week's World Championship match.
Well a fine shot, but best in history? Gimme a break. Consider Al Hackner's double takeout in the 10th to win the 1985 Labatts Brier.
Ummm....no. The extra spin made it very dramatic, but the shot was not complicated, or risky, or game winning. Next.

Ummm...no. It's extremely complicated, because a stone with that much spin behaves completely differently from a normally thrown stone. It's like a pitcher trying to control a knuckle ball when the baseball has been thoroughly greased.

Do you actually curl? If so, you'd know this was a difficult shot. It took me a dozen tried to achieve the split Rachel Holman threw. It might take many more to accomplish Edin's shot. Try his shot and let me know how you make out. I'll wait.
Not so special. Just a trick shot that came off.
