    +GamingDude800 I think it was because they never seemed to flow as they should have, at least to me. The camera always felt just a bit too close, obscuring what was coming and forcing insane reaction times. Like he said in the video, it encouraged repeated play and mastery, which just isn't something I really want in a 2d platformer to pop in. I want that immediate satisfaction of feeling like I'm in complete control and not at the levels mercy. The gameplay just always felt like it was constantly being broken up, especially its speed, its greatest draw, with slow, halting platforming. The large labyrinth like levels are a really cool concept, and a great way to show the genesis' capabilities in comparison to Mario, but I never felt like they were used to their full potential. Always stopping and starting, hitting dead ends and walls instead of seemlessly exploring. Don't get me wrong, I don't think they're bad games. Not in the slightest, they're fantastic. Just not really to my tastes.

  • @zopilote7

    @zopilote7

    8 жыл бұрын

    +GamingDude800 I never said it was a negative thing. I said it wasn't something I really want in a 2d platformer I just want to be able to pop in and play. When you play, say, super mario world; you enter a level not knowing what exactly to expect, but you have such complete control over mario that you're never overwhelmed or taken by surprise. It's just your skills up against the challenge of the stage. Sonic just never felt like a platformer that I have complete control over, I always felt like going fast would hinder me more than benefit me. I always felt like the levels never fully complemented sonics speed. Like suddenly halting your speed by hitting a wall you couldn't see, or random spikes directly in your path. And the Castle at the end of SMB wasn't about mastery, it was simple trial and error. There was nothing to master, just guessing until you got the correct path.

  • @zopilote7

    +GamingDude800 You really took absolutely none of what I said in; did you? And what? I literally originally commented about how much I love gunstar heroes. That game is hectic as all hell and it's amazing. Now if you want a "sonic-like" game that's fast, a bit challenging and basically an homage to classic sonic as well as 16bit Treasure(the developer) games. Play freedom planet. That game solves all of the problems I have with classic games.

    BronyBass Star Ocean: The Second Story is a fan-fucking-tastic game that is so overlooked and underrated. The original is good for when it was created. But the sequel Star Ocean: Till the End of Time was straight up cabbage. It took the good shit from Second Story and just got rid of it. Like the talent system and the crafting mechanic. Such a shame, because the story itself wasn't terrible. Plus the characters were pretty memorable. 3 words: Albel Fucking Nox!

    Phantasy Star IV and Chrono Trigger remind me of each other, and not just because they're sci-fi JRPG's. They're both extremely accessible, they're fast-paced, there's little fluff or filler, and they're on the shorter side as far as JRPG's go. They really are the best their respective systems have to offer in my opinion.

But, with its use of multiple resources (gold, rep, alignment) and the theater map, its really closer to a console attempt at a grand strategy. Which is perfectly fine; the Ogre Battle series is amazing and MotBQ is in my top 3 games of all time. I don't really want to know how many hours I spent in that game. By that logic then the Genesis is just an add on. If one owned the Sega Master System (Sega's 8-bit console), then you could buy an add-on to it which allowed you to upgrade said system to play all the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) games. Then you could also attach that upgraded system to the Mega CD add-on; as well as eventually the 32X add on. So why are you not just comparing all of the Genesis games to the regular NES games? After all the Genesis is part of the Master System, it was just an add-on to the Master System after all.

Oddly enough, just this week I decided to work on my snes backlog to see what I missed out on. Working on Mega Man X at the moment. There are plenty of great recommendations for Genesis in the comments already. I only saw Rolling Thunder 2 and 3 listed once. Definitely worth a look if they suit you. Also, I think Mega Turrican rocks. It's totally different from both snes games. I prefer it, but it's fun either way. Some of the Toaplan shooters are great too. Truxton, Fire Shark and Grind Stormer are all pretty rad to me.

    Not really, it all depends on the type of games you liked. Sega did certain types of games better, and they focused on those hard. Each company also asked the game developers to make exclusive versions of games for them; it was rare for any games at the time to be actual ports due to the fact that the controllers didn't have the same number of buttons (the genesis controllers originally having 2 fewer buttons, then later having 1 [or 2?] more than the SNES); that plus the companies wanting to have a game unique to them added to it all.
