    Great video. I have the Rodecaster Pro with the Podmic, a set of JBL 104 monitors, a small (the smallest) Behringer FBQ800 equalizer - makes the sound from the speakers even better - and I've just bought the Audio-Technica BPHS1 broacast headset, which I love because they sound great, are lightweight, built-in microphone (dynamic) and the cables is XLRand jack, it's way more portable than the very heavy Podmic with either a stand or a boom arm. Here at home I have my 5 disc CD-player connected to the line input on the Rode caster pro via a small adapter, and if I needed it I can easily connect the same way either my Audio-Technica AT-LP120XBT-USB record player or my other big mixing console, the Behringer DX2000USB which is also connected to a Numark CDN77 USB double DC player. But normally I just use the Rodecaster.

    Hi James, thanks for making this video, love the setups you've outlined here. Something I've been having difficulty with is finding a mixer that can cut my monitor speaker's sound when fading up a mic. I used to run an electronic music show on community radio and certainly took that feature for granted at the time! Now at home I'm looking to stream DJ sets online, and it helps in being able to hear the mix outside of the cue headphones. But I'd really like to be able to cut my speaker sound when speaking on the mic (as you mention in your video at 7:15), as well as be able to route in my decks (traktor s4). Hope this makes sense, any pointers would be hugely appreciated, thank you!

    Check out my videos on the Rodecaster Pro here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZomVy7Kil8LPgbw.html This offers ability to cut speakers/monitors. I'd suggest you still use your DJ mixer for mixing, then use this as a secondary 'radio' mixer - which is what most stations do.

    I know this video is a little older however, I would actually recommend for the basic setup to spend another $50 and instead get the Zoom Podtrack P4 with the Zoom ZDM-1 mic/headphone pack, which also include a small stand and can work anywhare since it can work on standard AA-batteries. In that way you have everything you need to grow up to 4 mics/headphone ($90 each) and/or 3 people in the studio plus another via mobile phone through Zoom BTA-2 bluetooth adapter for another $40. For the middle setup, I wouldn't change anything but maybe the headphones even though, Zoom have a more or less direct competitor to Podcaster Pro in Zooms Podtrack P8 however, I prefer the feel and sound from the Röde mixer better. Also to note, changing the entry level setup, both the entry and mid level setup support fully working Podcast setup that works really well without any computer since it records direct to a SD-card (in the Rodcaster Pro, to a micro-SD for some reason), you can do full Podcasts episodes anywhare you like that can then be edited in any PC/MAC. With both setups, it's even possible (with the Zoom BT-2 and directly built in, in the Rodcaster Pro), to direct streami your podcasts to any Podcasting platform via a mobile phone...

    Great Video! I'm thinking about / wanting to start up my own radio station, I'm coming from a DJing background, so I have a pretty good idea about on how to set up the stuff and I have the Pro DJ gear, music etc. The way I am thinking on going is with the Rodecaster, 4 - 5 ($100) mics, and my DJ equipment (DJ controller OR the pair of Turntables), and then some monitors. Would that be considered a "Professional Grade" studio, for a Radio station? And of course the proper connections, stands, desk, and misc stuff.

I believe there is also a Linux version (for even cheaper computing - though maybe at cost of techiness). I just needed to give macOS permissions for Parallels (app) to access things like the mic and removable drives. Have you any opinions on this kind of solution?

  • @carlos_mann

    @carlos_mann

    3 жыл бұрын

    you'll need the music, mics / interface, computer (similar to setup #1 in vid), a DAW / audio recording software (audacity is free + good), and whatever your content / show ideas are. Side note, you'll also need for the proper licenses if you're wanting to be legit about playing copyrighted music, that way you don't get hit for "Copyright Infringement" 🙄 (don't get sued, or have your show taken down). But if you're just doing 6 shows, its highly unlikely that'll happen. However, getting the licenses would be completely over kill for the average amateur. Hope this helps. Lmk if youll need any other help. Keep in mind that would be pretty much the absolute basic & cheapest solution.

    my studio is a bit "old school" but works quite well. main mixer is a mackie 1642 vlz pro. my studio is not very well soundproofed, so i use shure sm 58 dynamic mikes (7). cd players are gemsound cd-70, the only one they make that seems to hold up. a tascam cd-rw is my main recorder. a tascam md 501 ( don't laugh ) is a mini disc recorder/player for commercials, jingles, editing live concerts, etc. monitors are behringer "truth", which are self powered. the main mackie output feeds a processor that goes to the computer. the 2nd output feeds a 1000 watt f.m. transmitter, several rooms away to reduce noise. the 3rd output feeds the 2 tascam recorders. i bulit a relay that cuts the monitor when the local mike is switched on, along with a "on air" light outside the door. i have v.u. meters on each mixer output for quick reference of levels. this setup is 20+ years old & works well.

    Standard in the US - not in Europe where you’ll see most studios have SM7Bs - and in the UK the standard in most studios is condenser mics such as Neumann TLM103/U87. AT models etc. Also RE20 is kind of old skool I f you like being stuck in the 80s! We fitted a studio out with RE320s with GREAT results - also notice a lot of US studios use RE27 now 😀

    Engineers here in the states prefer the RE 20 because if they forget their hammer, they know they can always use an RE 20. The RE 20 is built to be abused by DJ’s who’re notorious for trashing equipment….that’s why engineers like it. It’s not because it sounds so great. My personal preference for any kind of voice work: Neumann TLM 103.

    Why do you need anything except a phablet. There are several inexpensive iOS Field Recorder apps. Professional MoJos, who get paid for their work, don't use expensive desks like you show. Radio is much more than Top 40.

    I'm tired of KZread gurus refer to purely online live streaming as "radio." Real radio is broadcasting over the air, using an an antenna, and requires a good deal more equipment, expertise and, most importantly, an FCC LICENSE than if you're podcasting, which is basically what this video is talking about.

  • @JamesMulvanyTV

    @JamesMulvanyTV

    Incorrect. Lot of people listen to radio online now and devices like smart speakers and connected cars are going to overtake terrestrial broadcasts eventually, you're stuck in the past so get with the times. A broadcast online is absolutely no different to something which is via a radio signal over the air.

    I'm not talking about the computer in this video though am I? I'm talking about the equipment.... You could just as easily use any of this with a $200 windows laptop - the computer isn't really important. I'm also guessing most people will already be watching this video... on a computer.
