Aragon is a region of contrasts: The north, which borders France, is characterized by the lonely Pyrenees with their ancient glaciers and clear mountain lakes, their steep-sided gorges and deep forests. This natural paradise in the north of Spain is barely populated, but parts of it are protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park.
In stark contrast to the green wilderness of the Pyrenees is the fertile Ebro Valley. Most of Aragon's inhabitants live here, in one of the traditional towns along the river. The largest and most important of these cities is Zaragoza, the capital of the autonomous community of Aragón.
Teruel, located further south in the Iberian foothills, is also well worth a visit. The home of Serrano ham has always been a multicultural city, as evidenced by the numerous buildings in the Mudéjar style.
