Best Place to Live in Thailand for Expats?

Where to live in Thailand?
www.thailandret...
What's the best place to live in Thailand? Richard Weeks has lived almost everywhere in The Land of Smiles -- and currently lives in Fang, north of Chiang Mai -- and gives some straightforward advice about choosing where to settle in Thailand.
How can you enjoy a high quality of life on a limited budget? You may find that don’t to go to the cheapest place to live in thailand to achieve that. Ever thought of moving to Thailand? You'll almost triple your buying power and you'll be living in a happy, gentle, relaxed culture.
In this video Richard Weeks, a Thailand veteran, talks about middle-class Thai life, the best places to live in Thailand and where to enjoy it on a VERY limited budget.
Would you like to live in Thailand? Or retire in Thailand? Would you like to teach English in Thailand? Or even volunteer in Thailand? Then Richard's advice will help you calibrate your expectations and develop a realistic plan.
We think you’ll find that Thailand, in particular Chaing Mai, is one of the best places to live in asia for expats.

This gentleman has good understanding, perception, insight and realistic opinions on Thai’s and expats. Unlike some of the commenters here that are stuck on stupid, or have as much insight as a dodo bird. I hope you get a chance to interview him again, it has been almost 5 years. Or post more excerpts of your interview. Thank you,

I have known the Thai people for 40 years. Lived here 7 + years. The answer is subjective based upon who you are talking to, what they know. My answer is up North to Chaingmai or Rai. Cleaner most the time and so very nice. Good luck!

I guess Chaingmai is a area that is about to get very expensive because many want's to move there, but i would certainly choose that area too or else further up North, should i live in Thailand.

I just want to say, as a Western traveler, how kind the people of Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakorn Sri Thammarat, and Koh Tao were to me when I visited their province. :-)

I like Khon Kaen. Looked around but all you need. Something for all, good services close to all. I live rural 8 minutes from centre.( USA center). I would not want to live in Chang Mai but everyone to their own. Too many Foreigners and tourists there.. If you want to retire here, suggest you check out Khon Kaen.

I'm a thai but I have been a way from Thailand for very long time. I had decided moved to Chiang Rai! Chiang Rai is better than Chiang Mai smaller town and cheaper to live but only one is problem dry season right now! It's not so good air from forest fire and smokey everywhere is terrible in 2 months March-April after than will be ok!

I am Thai who have lived and worked in North America without helping from local people. I would say the same common sense goes for locals in both countries. Basically, it is all based on how to start the relationship. If you meet a Thai girl who wants your money and please you in any way you want. That's how you start the relationship and that would end badly. I know some foreigners who can have real relationship with Thais if they start the relationship without money to begin with. Thais are not xenaphobia but Thais care a lot for other Thais and the law is made that way. What do you think if a Thai can go to your country with money and can buy anything and live and make more money than the locals. You would not like it either.

@Thailand Retirement, or a Thai real estate agent, or a Thai office worker, or a Thai apartment manager, or a Thai waitress, or a Thai salon girl, or a Thai business owner, there are endless Thai women in Thailand who are fantastic women. Whereas if you come to Thailand, go to bars and pickup bar girls (prostitutes) and then complain when they seem like they're after your money needs to be a pattern that needs to come to an end with western men.

@Rich, yes Phuket is not good for getting women that's for sure, the best place by far hands down for getting a good women in Thailand is Bangkok, your choices are endless and all the best women from around Thailand move to Bangkok for the opportunity that it offers them. Phuket is for foreigners to relax and enjoy, not for getting a good Thai women.....(I live in Phuket)

Thailand has a double taxation agreement so for pensions or UK earnings, you only pay tax in the UK, ( unlike Cambodia for example where you are taxed again on your UK earnings including your pension, if you live there for over 6 months, even though you have paid tax on them in the UK) but for earnings from a business in Thailand, you have to pay tax there.
