Best Perennials - Campanula Catharina (Dalmatian Bellflower), for raised beds, rock walls & pots.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Campanula Catharina is a super little perennial from www.gardensplendor.com for raised beds, rock walls, spaces between stepping stones, troughs and container gardens or for the front of beds and borders
It is a beautiful selection of the Dalmatian Bellflower (C. portenschlagiana) that is more compact and better behaved (does not spread as much) as the species and some selections that hail from the Dalmatian Mountains in Croatia.
When it is not flowering it forms tight rounded clumps of bright green attractive foliage that looks great popping out between spaces in stone walls
It is hardy to Zone 4, Grows only 6-10” x about 10-12” wide, and is covered by masses of little lilac-blue bell shaped flowers in early summer, it flowers sporadically with little bursts of bloom during the rest of the summer, and usually comes again with a stronger burst in early autumn.
It grows best in well-drained conditions in sunny to partially shaded locations.
Once established it is resilient and drought tolerant, and is also tolerates shadier conditions if needed.

Is this the same plant as the Serbian Bellflower or Campanula Poscharskyana? Thank you for any help.

No, it is NOT the same, this one is MUCH better behaved (it does not spread so vigorously). It is also tighter and altogether a more shapely plant and I've never seen it self seed. From what I've seen, this one is a much more endearing little "clumper'. In some situations (say large banks) where you want something to "run" and spread, C. poscharskyana might be OK, but for most of us, a cute little bell flower like this is more desirable.

How do I get this plant to grow on my wall

Thanks for your question, It is not difficult, you can either plant it in a bed at the top of the wall and allow it to grow and drape down over the edge, or if you have a rock wall you can remove a few of the stones and plant it into the wall and replace the rocks. The plants then grow out in spaces between the rocks, making tufts or cascading mounds. In nature this plant's ancestors would grow in cracks and crevices on cliff faces or mountain sides, so as gardeners we are re-creating those conditions. Just be sure to water it well to get it started, then afterwards (when it is established) it should survive without much need for watering unless there's a severe drought etc. You might like to view this video from my garden where I have another (very good) variety growing on a low wall: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mYSqm9uiYZuTnKQ.html

Juanita, The Garden Splendor®plants are delivered fresh, in peak condition (like in this video) to participating garden centers located in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern U.S. States. You can select the ones nearest you by going to the website www.gardensplendor.com, just put in your zip code and a list will appear or alternatively you can search for them within your state. The knowledgeable and experienced people at these centers will be able to let know about their prices and of course when the plants are there, you will be able to select the plants yourself and get extra guidance, tips and advice from the experts there. As you can probably understand, nice, big, beautiful, plants like these in their prime would get horribly damaged in the mail. Thank you for your interest in our lovely plants.
