I think the reason that happened is because the game prioritized mario interacting with the spring and not counting for yoshi, hence why he shrunk, its a programming oversight with a very specific condition to occur.

To be fair they stopped playing which reset the stars and Elliot would have gotten 100 if they didn't.

They were playing on the Wii Virtual Console, which has a save feature for NES and SNES, if you went back to it after turning off the console, it'll start up right where you left off
