Well hey there, all you beautiful coffee lovers! I hope you're all doing super well wherever you are in the world.
Today’s video is pretty special, and I’m honored to showcase this beautiful washed geisha from Panama to you all.
My friends at Coffee Tech here in New Zealand have been huge supporters of me throughout my coffee career and the nearly 6 years of being a coffee content creator.
They kindly gifted me 16g of this coffee when I last placed an order for some coffee gear. So I just want to take a moment to say thank you to the team at Coffee Tech and to make you as the viewer aware that this coffee was gifted to me, with no strings attached or ask for a video. I’m purely creating this video because I had a hunch that this coffee would blow me away, and boy, it did.
Allow me to share some information regarding this coffee with you, taken from the Coffee Tech website before I leave you in peace to enjoy the remainder of this brew video.
This coffee is from the Best of Panama 2023 lot and comes from the Carmen Estate Coffee Farm. The Carmen estate coffee farm is located on volcanic black soils and has an outstanding micro-environment, leading to its recognition as one of the world’s finest coffee-growing regions.
The process for this coffee starts with uniform red cherries picked from the coffee tree, de-pulped, and dried in mechanical dryers. After the drying stage, they are then machine and hand-selected to obtain notes of florals, jasmine, sweet orange, lemongrass, and sugarcane.
As mentioned, this coffee is the farm lot of Best of Panama 2023 GW-01, which Coffee Tech won the auction for at the world record price of US$10,005 per kg.
For all the full-time coffee nerds out there who would like to know, on the cupping table, this particular coffee scored 96.5 out of 100.

This coffee has absolutely blown me away and has taken one of the top 3 spots of the best coffees I've ever had the pleasure of drinking. I'm incredibly grateful to have been able to experience this coffee and to bring some content forward to showcase to you guys.
I'm sad that the drinking experience ended so soon. Of course, I highly recommend this coffee and want every single one of you to try it - but I understand that you aren't all going to jump at the opportunity, especially for the price.

Coffee noob here. What would you say is the price point where the diminishing returns start when it comes to good tasting coffee in general (and with gesha/geisha)? Like I understand this was an unique experience, but I believe it wasn't miles away from some less expensive offerings.

Great question. You're correct in saying that it wasn't far off from a less expensive coffee, and I've definitely had more affordable coffees that can stand up to this one, but in their own unique way. This Panama Geisha, for me, was an incredibly unique drinking experience. It was roasted to perfection, at least in my personal opinion. It brought back some great memories of the very first coffee I had from Panama, which was a pivotal moment in my coffee journey. So, if I were to have bought this coffee (not been gifted it), I'd be paying mostly for a fantastic drinking experience. I appreciate that Coffee Tech took great care during roasting, allowing the coffee to showcase its best qualities during preparation, brewing, and drinking. I'm not very qualified to speak confidently about diminishing returns, and quite honestly, it's not something I think about often. I tend to buy more expensive coffee from reputable roasters/cafes because I know that more of that investment goes back to the people at origin, and generally, the coffee is roasted better. This enhances my drinking experience and makes brewing relatively easier. Here in New Zealand, the average price for a 250g bag of coffee ranges between $20 and $40. I've had bags of coffee at the $40 mark that were, in my personal opinion, pretty terrible, and I've had some at the $20 mark that were amazing. Ultimately, what I'm saying is, if you know that the roaster takes a lot of care in roasting their coffees, regardless of price, that's where I'm willing to invest. I know this comment doesn't directly answer your question, but this is my perspective. Cheers, Sean The Drumming Barista
